Trip Report
To the Perch!
Tuesday June 30, 2015 12:30pm
The Sawtooth Range of central Idaho is as impressive as any mountain range I've ever visited. It is a true display of how incredibly pointy mountain tops can be! REALLY REALLY POINTY!

We ended up climbing the Direct Beckey (5.11) on day one, and finishing off day two with the Mountaineers Route (5.8+). All in all it was a very very successful trip, and I might count the Direct Beckey as the best rock climb I've done yet! In terms of quality it is only matched by Shunes Buttress in Zion as the best free route I've ever done.

Overall we did the DB in about 6-7 hours, and the Mountaineers in 2hr.

W.L. - It's amazing dude. 10 straight pitches of badass 10+ crack climbing with a stonker boulder problem on pitch 1.

thebravecowboy - the hike into the perch is only 3 miles and 2000 vertical gain. It goes in about 2 hours for a fit party.

It seems there is no limit on perches in the Sawtooths/Sawtooth Range, just trout.

(Plurals be strange.)

Glad you had a great couple of days, Grippa!

Nice! I planned to drive through there over the last couple of weeks, but instead did the southern loop through Utah and touched briefly in Wyoming. Maybe next summer will be Tetons with a stop by the perch....

The Elephant's Perch has some of the best and most beautiful granite on earth, by the way. Terrific setting, Redfish lake below which you cross on boat to get to the climbing. Unbelievably ideal setting.

NutAgain...the Perch is better than the Hulk if you're a 5.10/11 climber AND fewer people, shorter approach and far better camping.

Yeah, J-Do.

It is the closest I have ever seen to an ideal situation in normal altitude. More like a fantasy than what is usually somehow crummy in some ways.

Yea absolutely an alpine "vacation" if I've ever experienced one.

I love the Hulk....the Perch just has more climbs that are still in my range. The two stand as the best alpine rock crags in America.

Thanks for an absolutely beautiful report! Thanks for the photos, too. The climb is now on my list (hey, what's a little French free between friends?).

FRITZ! That's on the docket for next time. We got some rudimentary beta on it, and it looks great.
