Trip Report
Eastern Sierra Romps via Arkansas
Thursday March 25, 2010 1:47pm
In late August My friend Kerry and I made a quick jaunt to the East side. We had no game plan, no agenda, no goals. All we were looking for was a bit of the exposure that we love so much, but have to travel great distances to find. After realizing that his knee just wasn't gonna allow him the burly approaches and long periods of repeated flexing, Kerry generously allowed me to choose some peaks that were within my abilities and go on a couple of very memorable solo trips... Here is a photo TR of what went down.

Starting with the central gully of Laurel.

At this point, the ipod went on, and I bopped on back to the car. I think it clocked in around 5.5 hours give or take. A wonderful day of sun, stiff breeze, and beauty. On to the tubs for a bath and a beer.

"What next? Feel like you got one in ya Kerry?"
"Yeah man, whatcha thinkin?"
"Cathedral?..."
"Sounds good, done it, but I'll do it again."
"Tomorrow then."

So, we headed up to the gas station for tacos, slept, and made our way in the morning.

From there we got the call to come back to work. But, before we could leave there was just one more thing I needed to do. And, since we had the pass and were gonna have to drive by it anyway... it just had to happen. Mt. Whitney.

I started early in the a.m. and did the mountaineers route for two reasons
1) speed
2) there was a much better chance of success in its various forms...

When I reached the top, it was as if I was the only one who had come up that side of the mountain that day (probably not, but it felt that way). I scrambled over to the summit, found a lovely couple with a camera and we swapped photos quickly before I started down the normal trial. Speed was no longer a concern for me, and the extra miles seemed like a good idea. So, down I went, and 9 hours after starting I was back in the car and headed home. I dearly miss being there now.

We also hit Crystal Crag in the beginning and spent a bunch of time around the Bardini's drinking beer and wondering about stuff. All in all it was a good 5 days in the Sierras, again.

I present my first TR, and for that matter, first post to the taco. I hope you enjoy it.

Nice, thanks!

When I did Laurel, I started to hear a voice in my head - about halfway up - wondering whether I was actually liking the climbing, or whether the debris and rubble scrambling wasn't actually a drag. But quickly pushing that voice out of my mind, I thought, "Think of the poor bastards who don't have a Laurel or a Sierra in their backyard, and appreciate what you have!" So I did.

I also took a pretty fun variation for the final third of the route, going waaay out left/south to the true arete that looks over the steep southern cirque. Very exposed, very friable rock, lots of fun and avoids a lot of that final rubble fight.

Thanks again for the TR.

Neat stuff!
Makes a nice contrast while a hefty spring snowfall roars in silence just outside my window.

Never seen Mount Laurel up close like that; that red rock is pretty cool, looks very compact in a couple places.

Does your map give a name for that escarpment in your last picture shown from the descent?
Looks kind of tantalizing, although we know it's probably that typical nicely shaped High Sierra grunge ...

Thanks for the east side fix. It's been rainy and chilly all day here today, and those photos of sun and blue skies and east side rock are a welcome diversion.

Tarbuster,

I went back and tried to find a name for that valley or feature in the photo, but the topo was cut short there. All I can say it is where the Muir trial splits right on the descent, if you come down the hiking trail. Let me know how it looks.

I too had never seen up-close views of that route on Laurel. Now you've added it to my list, Thanks!

And Tarbuster: That's Mt. Hitchcock, a beauty, a hidden gem. I've been within a mile of the wall, down on the Muir Trail, and the closer you get the better it looks. Nothing has been done on that mile-wide face, except a 4th class route up a gully. Nothing. It's that same fine dark diorite as Temple Crag and Middle Cathedral Rock. Those aretes and buttresses run 800' to 1200'. Here's another view:

Here's detail of a couple ridges:
