Trip Report
3 Days in Red Rocks!
Friday May 22, 2015 2:30pm
It has been cold and wet in Bishop for the last week, and the spring pollen is hard on both of us this year. We have also both been busy with work, but the Muppet and I carved out a few days to escape to the sun this week. Heading over the hill, looking back on the valley where the intense and iconic Deep Springs College lies:

Arrived to a beautiful day in Red Rocks, with the hint of the recent storm still lingering:

We targeted Great Red Book for our afternoon jaunt:

Then back to camp for food and libations:

The next day we headed out to Black Velvet Canyon:

We had a few climbs that we were interested in. Frogland had a party on it and another party almost there, so we kept moving - another trip for this one:

The stunning Black Velvet Wall:

We settled on climbing Sour Mash a fun climb with some tricky initial climbing:

No pictures on-route, but the cholla were in full bloom from a storm a few days earlier:

Nice shadow and color play on the Calico Hills on the drive back:

Then it was off to Claim Jumper for our rib fix:

The next day, we headed up to Panty Wall to get some early climbing in before the drive home. The colors and textures at the First Pull-out are wonderful:

The climbing is excellent on wonderful patina, and the view doesn't suck, either:

All too soon it was time to head back into the weather - just south of Beatty, NV:

I feel honored that the legendary SoCal climber Jeff Constine would deign to even comment on our low-grade trip report!

Sweet cozy little camper there!

And what a fine time of year to be in that place - the clouds majestic and the temps kind.

Uh-oh. Sorry Dwain - we had planned on meeting you in Apple Valley, so we naturally assumed you were there. :(

The ribs - we like ribs and Claim Jumper has some of the best to our tastes. We split a full order and it is plenty.

Mmmmm, riiiibs...

Thanks, Susan!

Absolutely mind-blowingingly gorgeous weather for those few days. Couldn't ask for better.

The hoardes DID eventually show up at the Panty Wall BTW. We brought trad gear so we could climb the fun stuff. The sport-noobs gave a round of applause after MR.E topped-out on tiny gear at one point LOL.

Dwain:
DAMMIT!!!!

Wish I would have known you were here.

Meh!!! Muppet brain forgot. I thought you were in Cali working this week, or I would have called fer sure :( Did I mention MEH?)

Hmm, saw your name on a few FA's the last day...nice work!

Panty Raid was a pretty full-on on-sight, BTW - the top is where I got the attention of the gym-climbers. LOL.

Cool stuff, Eric.

I always thought the face climbing on Black Velvet is the most similar to the Winslow Wall climbing. Love those crisp edges . . .
