My two cents.

What I love about the taco is that everyone is together. What hasn't been good is that Trip reports have been lost to the way back and so the new Trip report section is great, but I would also like to see them posted on the front page. Let them act on the front page like they always do, and be saved in the Trip Report section.

Plus, I would like a climbing section where climbing post could be archived like the Trip report section, yet have them also posted to the front page, where if they are posted to, then they will be bumped to the top.

This way everyone has what they want. A front page with climbing, and Trip reports, and everything else, but also a Trip report archive and a climbing section archive for those who only want climbing topics.

hey there john moosie... say, if i understand correctly, the trip reports, then, could also be among the climber's forum post (like before), so we can STILL see all post listed?... :)

if that is the case, i would like that very very much (oh my, and i ain't a climber, i know, i know)... but:

i really MISS seeing them scattered among the forum post, cause then, when you get done with shareing "with buddies" suddenly a "trip report" will seem to "speak out to you" and you just "dive on in" and then, you are refreshed and such, and THEN you see a few other post/threads start to move about, up or down, and you get inspired to have a "buddy share" again for the night, and visa versa, etc, etc...

(but yes, still keep them as well, in an easy to find place, all together if BOTH can be possible...

also: for some reason, i can't seem to tell (it could just be me) but i can't seem to tell where the older comments on the trip reports, start or end, and where the newer comments, have joined up (i do see the dates, though, so perhaps i just got mixed up somehow, is all)...

thus meaning, maybe it was easier to scroll through, before... but then, mabye i just have to get used to it is all... (if that is the case, please disregard this last stuff, here...

Good suggestions Russ. I really like the improvements to the forum. Particularly being able to post pictures directly. I never liked having to use a third party proxy for pics. My only other suggestion would be to have links to all the page numbers of a thread at the bottom of the page. It is cumbersome to have to sift back 20 posts at a time.

Kudos and much respect to the ST gang for their great work.

I just noticed an unfortunate change.

Climber's location is the latest one entered, no matter how old the post
is.
It was amusing to see old locations on old posts, for those who actually
changed theirs.

Now, you'll see, for example, that Russ was posting from Poofter's Froth
five years ago, with no clue to the intriguing locales hes has frequented
in the interim.

Like this (repost from other thread):

I really enjoyed changing my profile every few days, making up random places where I'm 'from'. Now, however, the latest 'from' is retroactively applied to every post I've ever made, [long before I'd ever even heard of minitracking] and as well as everyone else's I suppose. Quite a bit of half-clever history is being lost here.

Can this feature be removed?

A very minor thing: could we see the thread topic in the "Post a Reply" window? It's a helpful way to check what thread you're writing about, and spelling names or whatever correctly too.

The other posters have hit most of the obvious things, but I'd add one more: On the Trip Reports section, the blue top bar has four fields - Title, Author, Last Post, and Msgs. If you could make the "Author" button active, so that clicking on it would sort the TRs by author, that would be a Very Good Thing.

An Even Better Thing would be to have some way of sorting TRs by climbing area. That would probably require future TRs to have an "Area" box, but it shouldn't be too hard to do that.

Anyway, keep up the good work -- this place is terrific, and very much appreciated by most of us who frequent it.

Here's one:

I can read and check out images fine on my iPhone, as can drljefe on his phone (not sure what he has). Don't know if anyone else has tried.

I can't log in and post comments though. Neither can jefe. Just wondering why, I can post just fine to other forums, but not ST.

I'm postIng from the iPhone, and I've been doing it for quite some time. ;-)

Thanks for the suggestions. We've implemented a number of these ideas:
The quote box now uses the same type size as normal text, and is displayed in italic style
The Reply page includes the subject now
Comment button now appears at the bottom of TR pages as well as top
A person's location and climbing type are now shown as of the time of their post (just like it used to)
Photos have now been increased in size to display at 600 pixels wide as per Russ' suggestion (we did not go larger than that as it would create problems for users on 1024 screens)
The bug Rokjox reported about a reply to post 19 has been fixed.

We could not reproduce the issue Russ cited with searching for a thread. In my tests it is going to the specific message just like it has in the past.

We could also not reproduce the iPhone problem. In my test it worked fine similar to Hardman Knott's test. I suspect this the issue is related to which iPhone software version you are using. Perhaps older iPhone software has an issue which does not occur with newer versions. I tested using the latest version.

Regarding your comment:
i posted links to two trs in the migrate thread (only two) and they never migrated

I just looked at the TR migration thread and didn't see any post from you. Sorry if we missed it, but I don't see your post even now.

Sorry about that t*r. Please re-post your links and we'll migrate them.

Rhodo-Router, I just checked a post from a month ago, and it shows a different location than your current. Are you seeing something different?

Russ, thanks for the email regarding the search problem. It is indeed a bug, one that was specific to which browser is used. It should be fixed now.

There is definitely useful historical information/entertainment from the old From: fields... just keep this as a field in the forum DB instead of fetching it from the user profile. Yes it is less efficient for storage, but in the scheme of things this disk space is waaaay less than the pictures.

If you really want to get fancy with optimizing disk space, maybe set up a separate table like (userid, fromIndex, fromContent) so users can have bazillions of different from fields, and you just store the fromIndex pointer in the forum table. Then again, that's more complication to not save very much disk space.

Some ideas which should help improve quality of posts:

don't allow deleting a post (OK to edit it to remove all text, though)
[this means all posts are visible at some level, and also prevents
thread deletion - people should only be allowed to edit their own posts
and not make other people's posts invisible or hard to find]

if a post is edited, add a time stamp (when it was edited)
[shows if a person changed their post]

in left column for a post, under "climber type" and "location", add date joined, and combined number of posts and TRs
[makes it easier to identify the "fresh alts" and also the "old pros"]

allow editing of thread title (once) to fix typos
[if editing posts is a good thing, so is editing titles]

Another idea that would be good is have a notification for new posts on certain threads.

I'm not checking Supertopo regularly, but I just posted a question which I hope will be answered by the vast collective knowledge out there.

But it might get bumped to page 6 or beyond by the time I check in next.

So a "notify me of replies" feature would be super helpful.
