in the course of an '02 BBC interview, John Peel said that Black Francis (aka: Frank Black) of The Pixies: "had the best mind and the best lyrics of anyone I have ever met."
i say amen. you wanna argue with John Peel?
~~~
"Surfer Rosa" would likely be my one (if only one, assuming a gun to my head and all) "desert island" album pick. fwiw, 'Rumor And Sigh' by Richard Thompson would likely be my second choice (another current ST thread). though ideally i could take a whole stack - Dylan, Coltrane, Hildegard Von Bingham, John Gorka - the whole Hwy 50 Carson to Ely collection.
~~~
"Cactus" on Surfer Rosa is, at its very core, perhaps the most beautiful (and gentle) love song ever howled over a stratotcaster. granted, on first listen, you'll think that insane (and, properly, dial 9-1-1). but after about 200 listens, the very soul of it overwhelms Frank's screams and the sometimes rather dark imagery. and with that the magic is revealed. don't trust me on this -- just give it 200 or so listens, ideally all alone out in the desert. if that doesn't work, then dial 9-1-1
~~~
tonight i wasted all manner of time writing 84 or so paragraphs trying to describe the first time i ever saw The Pixies live. clearly, further reflection and massive editing is required. i'll work on that.
in the mean time, i'll leave you with one wad of it i am rather adamant i won't axe:
"so anyway, this fat guy in a Sears house paint green leisure suit, walks out onto the stage and starts howling "IT'S ED-U-CATIONAL!" and i just stood there in the middle of the slam pit, transfixed. and so did the 6'4" dude with the mighty mohawk who had just recently pinballed me way out into the cheap seats -- then came over, gently picked me up, and said "are you OK, dude?"
i said "i'ah-heem am'uh juuuhst ah fah-hine...".
then he said "dude, i think you need some water or something. you don't look so good. man, you definitely need out of this pit, it's a rough one and you're way too skinny for this gig. listen, my girl is over there and she will give you her seat. are you sure you're ok? do you want a ride home or something?"
yeah, this 260lb guy who would scare even an NFL linebacker, replete with red mohawk all stiff with egg whites and with the muscle tone of Mike Tyson, is there cradling me like an infant and asking if i'm OK...
ah, those were the days.
~~~
so anyway, about 3,000 of us ne'er-do-wells got all suddenly very silent and suddenly still listening to this pudgy guy in a way too small pale green leisure suit. somewhere in the midst of all this, while held aloft by a 260lb nice guy who only looked like your worst nightmare, even i came to almost believe that even a skinny monkey like me might someday go to heaven.
a rather memorable moment.
~~~
later, when Perry Farrell (and Jane's Addiction, his big time headline band) tried to come out and play -- this after The Pixies like 4th encore. they got furiously boo'ed off the stage to make room for more Pixies -- by me, a 260lb really nice guy in a mohawk, and a couple thousand of our new pals.
The Pixies got fired, by Farrell, that very night. this was like '90 or '91 - at the old SF convention center. (memory gets rather fuzzy that far back -- especially when The Pixies or Nicole were involved.)
~~~
if you dig The Pixies (or even if you haven't yet tuned in, converted all of your cash into Korean currency, and gotten into the van) -- do consider that Frank continues to write really great stuff.
truth be told, i myself think his very best stuff is post-Pixies. i especially like the Frank Black And The Catholics gigs.
here's a sneak peek (pulled from an old zombie server i simply cannot kill -- try as i may. in the day i just posted this up for a couple of pals, back when lawyers didn't have computers):

One of my favorite bands of all time.
Weird coincidence...we listened to them as we were driving out from Tuolumne this past weekend. Stuff from Doolittle.
Surfer Rosa was almost the handle I used for this site.
I missed their reunion at Coachella in '04 but managed to get a disc of a soundboard copy of the performance. It's like they never broke up.
Love the little resurrection they're getting in "500 Days of Summer" where Joseph Gordon Levitt's character does "Here Comes Your Man" in a karaoke bar. Coolest movie needs the coolest tunes and references and those who made that great little flick know the Pixies are TIMELESS COOL.

LoudQuietLoud is a great flick. A must-watch for Pixies fanatics.
I was listening to KCRW's Eclectic webstream today, and they played Breeders 'Cannonball'- I forgot how much that song rips. Breeders/Kim Deal weren't as edgy as Pixies, but had a great, melodic, power-alt-pop sound about them, all the same.

Since my name is "Black" I can totally relate to senior Francis Black ... but then again what really sparked me about the Pixies was the parallel convergence of Grunge with Boston Rock Pixies ... Number 13 Baby!

In honour of this thread I'm listening to the Pixies all day.
Saw them in Vancouver during the big reunion tour; wasn't the greatest show ever. They played well but there wasn't exactly a lot to look at or even much beyond what is heard on the albums. I like Frank Black and the Catholics' live show more these days.

I've listened through the new single, "Bagboy" a few times now. I think it's a worthy Pixies song, somewhere along the lines of Subbacultcha.
Way less awkward than listening to their other post-reunion song, which seemed like a crooked Breeders' tune.
Still, hearing Kim's voice again now is a sad reminder that she has left the group.

Good...but not mind-blowingly stellar.
It's pretty much the Frank Black show, and not having Kim Deal there is a real bummer. Still, Joey Santiago still shreds, and it's super fun to hear songs that I looooooove so much.
The Joint (Hard Rock, Las Vegas) is a great venue, too- small-ish (~4000), with balconies of VIP seating where they serve you drinks, with a good view. Years ago I'd have been down there on the floor surfing the mosh, but this was a really nice place to watch the show.

It's tough to see them without Kim Deal on bass. She was a swell foil to the abrasive guitars and ratcheting drums.
It looks like the new road four-stringer - Paz Lenchantin - adds good harmonies and having a violin in the sound adds a new dimension. Check out the intimacy of this NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

I thought the new bassist did a fine job. If you went expecting Kim Deal you didn't know too much about the new lineup lol.
Great show...but then I always thought Frank was the talent in that band anyway. As further evidenced by his work with the Catholics.

If Kim Deal doesn't somehow make her way back, it would be nice to see Paz become a stronger presence in the band. There are several songs that are signature Deal tunes that were either not done at all (Gigantic) or were not sung by Paz (Heaven).
Frank Black is such a dominating presence on stage (and off) that a sweetening balance is much needed. Paz's voice is a passable substitute for Kim's...hopefully she can gain a stronger presence in the band.
