Hello everybody,

I am trying real hard to get the evening programs confirmed and should have it together early next week. I wanted to get this out last month. This is what I have so far.

Tuesday September 22 – We may have something at Yosemite Lodge, waiting for confirmation

Wednesday September 23 – Peter Croft slideshow at East Auditorium 7:00pm -10:00pm

Thursday September 24 – Reel Rock Film Tour at East Auditorium 7:00pm -10:00pm

Friday September 25 – Stonemaster show & book signing at East Auditorium 7:00pm -10:00pm

Saturday September 26 – Outdoor music in front of the Visitor Center 5:00pm – 9:00pm Bands will be announced soon. Fattrad will be having a MeatFest and info for that is in that thread. There is also an OktoberFest in El Portal. A big night!

Sunday September 27 – Reception at East Auditorium 6:00pm-12:00am with food, drinks and music by Jonathan McEuen Band

At all the programs there will be wine and beer provided by New Belgian Brewing Company.

I am going to try a few new things this year and I hope it works as I am sinking close to $20,000 into the event.

Last year we had a water sponsor and I cringed every time a plastic bottle of water was handed out. This year I was approached by 2 different bottled water companies and I decided to say no. Instead, I have ordered 1,000 stainless steel Kleen Kanteens. I am going to pass a certain amount out to the earliest
sign-ups every day. Please only one per volunteer for the event.

I am going to have 6 bicycles with carts available to use for support in the field around the Valley. I am also looking into having other bikes available too.

I am going to have a special 2009 Facelift T-shirt available for the volunteers at slightly above cost. I think the art work for it is really good and I will post it later.

To help cover some of the cost of the event I am going to sell Facelift beer glasses for $20. This glass will get you free beer or wine at all the evening programs.

The Facelift seems to get bigger every year and this year is no exception. The Park Service has doubled the amount of free camping to accommodate about 500 people. Yellow Pines and Camp 4 are full. I do have some left in Crane Flat and in Tamarack Flat Campgrounds. Email me at YCA@inreach.com if you need a space. I need to know for which days and the names of everyone in your group. Please be patient as it is a lot of work to assign the camping. I only work on it 2 days a week. You will receive an email confirmation back.

I look forward to seeing you there.

I will post any updates to this thread.

There are reports the use of bottled water is not growing as it once was or may even have begun to decrease.

The answer? The platypus. After ten years of use we have had only one start to leak.

Hi John,

I have tried the water bladder thing and could taste the bladder. Perhaps I needed to use it more to get rid of the rubbery taste. I have tried the stainless steel containers and found that they clean easily and don't harbor any funky taste. Yosemite has such good water that there is no need for the imported stuff.

A good time will be had by all!

Those who haven't made arrangements already can make Ken's job much easier by being exact about what you hope for. Vagueness as to numbers of people and dates arriving make his job much harder. Also, given what Ken says, it seems likely that deciding at the last minute isn't an option, nor is simply showing up with a hopeful smile.

Ken, John and I will be there on the afternoon of the 19th, ready to welcome Lynne to deepest darkest Camp 4. If there's anything I should bring or do in advance, let me know - and of course, we're looking forward to helping out in the days leading up to the FL. (I'll be secretly training tomorrow at the Adopt-a-Crag at the Squamish Mountain Festival.)

I hope that's $20,000 of YCA money that's being invested, and not your own! It sounds like there are some excellent plans for evening events, and regarding water bottles, tee shirts, beer, and glasses. The FL plans and activities get better every year.

What are you bringing to deal with the C4 Hyenas? They come around after 3AM. You have to have the tools ready inside your tent. Rattlesnakes work but cobras are better.

You need only leave a light on for the hyenas to see the cobra's shadow, I have found.

Oh, and the water issue - GOOD to not "import!" Bottle water is being exposed for the rip off it really is.... Convenient, yes. But much of this $$ stuff comes from municipal wells.

Info:
http://www.tappening.com/

Also - This is an organization getting restaurants to allow people to come in and fill er up, in an effort to help people avoid purchasing water while on the go. It's in NYC now, but expanding. Check it out, and see if you can persuade businesses local to you to get in on it!

edit: Sweet! A week ago it wads just NYC. Now Florida and Oregon have been added!!!!

Hello,

As promised here is the T-shirt that will be available at the Facelift for the volunteers. If you can't make it and want one, for $25 I can send you one. How many should I make? A special thank you to Mike and Simon. Thanks you guys.
This is the Mike Clelland artwork that will appear on the back of the shirts. Simon King (Ihateplastic) worked with Mike to create this original artwork for Facelift 2009. Limited edition... collector's items... when they're gone they're gone.

This is the Yosemite Climbing Association logo artwork that will appear on the front of the shirts.

The men's shirts will be light blue and the women's shirts will be light green. Shirts will have the YCA logo on the front left breast area and the Clelland artwork on the back. The shirts are 4.6 ounce organic cotton.

I hope you like them.

A couple of notes on the shirts...

First, the color swatches below the shirt pics are closer top the real colors. We all know what the interpipes can do to colors. Just think, "light blue and light green."

Second, these shirts run true to size. Meaning... if you normally wear a large in a K-Mart/Target/Sears shirt then you will wear a large here. These are not trim fit or tailored for Euros!

Third, I asked Mike to add the veins to make the guy a "typical Valley hard boy." Mike calls stuff like the vein emphasis and twitching finger muscles "BOING!"

Shouldn't there be a bear in the cartoon? #46, for example? Perhaps skulking behind a tree, spying on proceedings?

Further note: If you plan to arrive before the 22nd, make sure Ken knows. I'm sure there'll be lots of things to do preparing - putting up the big tents is a wonderful team building exercise, and litter stick maintenance repair is out of this world. But it will help Ken if he knows who's available.

Captain Kirk,

I think it's probably o.k. I have drank a lot of it myself over the years. I got grossed out by how much toilet paper (6 bags + or -) was found by Way Dicey that was above and just behind that little clear puddle that was the best natural water source in the Valley. Where does that water come from?

Okay! I just booked my flights.

Arriving on Friday, 9/18, early evening
Departing on Monday, 9/28 - early morning

I'll be looking to help Ken & Assciates out pre-Facelift, and get a little climbing in.

As for climbing, I am cool with cragging, partnering up with just another for stuff and would love to get on a long route(here, our mulitpitch is 3, and that's on wandering routes, so I have to say up front I am not experienced with long stuff.). If someone has interest, email me through the site to discuss experience levels and such.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

I do so love California, the sunshine, the countryside, the climbing, the people. Can not wait to be back!

The T-shirts are great! I also will want a guys, because I really don't care for the color green except as it occurs in nature. But, I will wait and see how it looks/fits. I find the women's t-s often don't feel comfy to me. I like a looser fit.

No responses to the above question re: transportation/shuttle from Tamarack to Camp 4 Facelift festivities so i'm bumping.

Blue, for sure. By the way we went over to boyscout rocks in mt. diablo and i ended up trying a line called Godzilla (unbeknownst to me) to the left of the crack...and the Amazing Face route.

Godzilla is a 5.12b...i couldn't even get higher than about 10-12ft off the ground. It might be a harder route than that because sandstone wears down pretty quickly. But the 5.9 Amazing Face route was beyond our reach for the day because some climbers were hogging it all day.

Sucks!

Ken may be busy - he doesn't frequent ST every day. My guess is that he has enough on his hands without trying to arrange transportation for people, and that he's hoping that those staying in Tamarack or Crane Flat will sort it out themselves, hopefully by carpooling back and forth each morning and evening. It's about a half hour drive.

Can't make it till later thursday or Friday morning. Really looking forward to it!

Hey Russ, most AmeriCorp workers are people with degrees, fresh out of school they get some loan relief and work experience for a year, and it is a great program where small non-profits can get great quality workers while splitting the annual salary with the feds. Lots of ecological restoration and youth programs do a lot of good work this way, and many get permanent positions after the contracts run out. TR could do a lot worse with her first year out of college.

Just sayin, and howdy to ya!

Sep 23, 2009 - 05:06pm PT
Stop it, stop it! You guys are killing me. I'm stuck in this God-foresaken cube wishing I was doing something to help my beloved Yose.

Can't take it anymore...I sense a Friday night burner up the 99 and 41. Sleep? I can sleep when I'm dead! I can get 2 days of cleaning in and still make back for work Monday. Besides, if I don't, who will do the late night recycle run to get the ranger off our backs?

Commencing loading....sleeping bag, work gloves, hat, sunglasses.....BBQ tools....

The wait is killing me. I'd planned to be there yesterday, but can't get up there until Friday. Looking forward to good work, fun and, of course, fattrad's meatfest.

Why doesn't the NPS just do their job?
They "seem" to do it here in Joshua Tree NP.

Seriously? Seriously? The clean up is just one more great reason
to get one's buttox up there. The weather is amazing, a bunch of
people you may or may not want to see. Not such a busy time of year. But, thanks for bumping it.

dragged back here early, the rest are still there cuz the party's still going..

here's the details: great slide shows in the auditorium with all you can drink beer and great tunes.. so about 5 or 6 guys got hammered completely, NOT climbers or associated with Facelift.. got up on stage, singing dancing .. drinking hard from a fifth of their own.. get thrown out .. go out to the parking area and steal a government car, pack themselves in it and drive right by the SAR party where all the rangers are.. shouting and cavorting around.. get chased down and thrown in the JM, $4000 fine for one of them. Generalized rowdiness and no injuries. Anders went to the hearing via video feed. Ken is totally relieved that Facelift is not implicated by their actions. Most figure they got off light. These guys really tore it up!

This was the first year for outdoor music on a stage with lighting, which Joe helped put up. I was a virgin FAcelifter. What a damn good time!!! Anastasia danced on stage with Dean Potter and some others...Linnie prodded Dean F for a 2005 stone male calendar.. Stonemaster presentation rocked, Largo read from his book which was so funny people were rolling.. the Reel Rock film was particularly good this year.. about the best I've seen from Sender..Tim ONeil has a great career in stand up.. and Croft honored Bachar with stories no one will forget. Twenty years from now people will realize

Facelift is by far the most exciting thing happening in American climbing.

Right now I am feeling sentimental over the Yosemite dirt that's been tracked into my home. Plus Bill has tracked in his share of Australian dirt...

I will post pictures later and... Yes, my tent was "mind blowing big." The one posted from camp 4 isn't it.

With Royer Putnam's expert operation of the bobcat several tons of tarvia came out of the restoration project on Saturday and Sunday. The work of getting it out and restoring the area was furious both days. Not a minute was wasted.

It was manual labor, It was hard.

And it got done.

Get ready for a sandbagging.

Fattrad,

Total weight was 60,197(some figures still coming in) pounds. I just finished bringing home truckload number 8 of tools and supplies. I still have to add up number of participants, volunteer days and miles covered. Unfortunately, I have jury duty on a trial that may last three weeks and a museum exhibit to remove so it may be a little while. Thank you everybody for all your efforts. Everything went smoothly and I thought people put even more effort into than the past. One of the true joys was meeting new people from all over the world that happened onto the Facelift who came up to me to say how much they enjoyed it and that they would be back next year with their friends.

Ken

P.S. I will post pictures once things slow down.

Sh#t, Ken, you may want volunteers to help you haul the loads after the Lift.

I might be down with that in the future, if there aren't weird legal restrictions.

Thanks again, Ken, for your dedication and work!
