The first sign of the Apocalypse is the Mobil Mart....

I'd like them way better if they put soap in the windshield washer buckets.... you'd think at the prices they charge, .18cents worth of soap a day would not be a big deal.

Sheesh! Another sign of the apocalypse is climbers waxing poetically about sheeshy food! Didja wash it down with Olde English like a real climber? Gotta run, the wife needs some things from Bristol Farms and Whole Foods; guess I'll pick up a sixer of "Fin du Monde" while I'm there.

Not only good food, but the nicest staff and service to boot.

We showed up late one night after a long epic day, tires screeching to a haute in the parking lot. No beer, no food, if the place is closed we're doomed.

We bolted through the door just as the open sign was turned off. The register was closed and the food court had taken it's last order and was preparing to shut down, but did they turn us away... Hell no.
We were given...yes! "given" the leftovers from the pizza by the slice counter, sans charge. More than enough for two hunger stricken climbers back from a long day on a long route having gone a long time without nourishment.

The register was already closed out, so no sales could be made, that much was clear. Seeing what must have been an obvious look of shock and disappointment on our faces, the nice lady at the counter asked, "you guys wanted beer too, right?".

YES!!!

The register is closed, but I can sell you any beer in the cooler for $10 bucks a six pack, just keep it quiet.

A fair price to pay if I do say so myself.

Karma must have been on our side that night.

I agree it's good food near a gas pump, but a lot of places in LA and Oakland are even better. That station should have never been allowed IMO. It is a small example of urban sprawl, any town USA, somehow escaped from the compact town of Lee Vining. Fish tacos aside, I have no idea how they got approval for that station - it was a zoning failure IMO.

I agree, David. You and I are both builders and developers and can't believe the discontinuity of the planning there. Amazing oldschool situation there for sure. Meanwhile it's there and I will have to ck out the food (lol).

Oh, and here's a bit of levity. I picked this up at the gas station:

I don't want to run the place down, not that it would matter, but the food is just OK IMO in an extremely sanitized environment that has little apparent connection to the local Lee Vining community. To me that place could be anywhere, a little touch of Fresno or Manteca on the east side. I've thought that since first seeing the sheepish MOBILE sign emerge, dry stack rock clad, over the ridge as you drive south on 395. I don't even think the rocks they made the sign with are local...

the food is good even giving it credit for being a gas station...

my picky eating SF living old friend Richie raved on about the pork chops one night, he thought they were much better then what he had a Chez Panisse a week prior...

I think it is a least a bit more interesting than a cheese burger, my opinion, of course.

The beer is sorta expensive there... last Monday on our way over to Mammoth Jaybro and I stopped off to look at #2 Diesel prices, check out the cost for IPA 395 and use the bathrooms... the fuel prices were too high, the 22 oz. bottle cost a dollar more than up in at the Tuolumne Meadows store (!) but the bathrooms were nice... one out of three is a good batting average (at least in baseball).

We stopped off in the Meadows on the way back and bought some beer, then got #2 Diesel in Oakdale on the way back (423 miles into the trip, could have made it back to Livermore except the diesel prices are cheaper in Oakdale)...

I love the music, I love the people and the owners, but the prices are outlandish and the fish tacos a farse. Not to mention the lobster ?? taquitos. $15 bucks for a bowl of gumbo? Give me a break.
(Tufa special man, just ask when you order a beer on tap.)
Besides it gets to be a zoo and that's not why I'm here.
I never even get a buzz off 1 mango marggy and 2 is too much sugar.

No soap in the wash bucket is right, bugs the crap outta me.
(Can't get the bug crap off the windows.)

Of course I'm biased, but I HAVE eaten the food at TPR for 6 years now, and still like it well enough to eat it every day. :)

It takes mind control not too eat too much pie or cake. It is that good.

Used to enjoy it there. Not so much anymore. Never was a fan of the mango margs. They tatste pretty crappy, IMO. The prices have gotten worse and worse and it's too crowded. I still stop in for a burger, occasionally, and it's good to run into people I haven't seen in a while there. Other than that, not so much.

Really, I think their reputation comes from weekend warrior types braving the "harshness" of a trip up Conness or Cathedral, whom are so incredibly worked by the time they get down, that *anything* would be the best meal they'd ever had. Kinda like that gallon of Hi-C and box of Twinkies my partner had in the car after our first wall. Or that McDonalds, near the Cairo airport after a couple of weeks of Egyptian food...

The food is so good at that dang mobil, well, I'm lickin' my chops now, here in berkeley thinkin of it. Only wish they'd made it a bit larger. Bit more of a footprint, and all. Shoot, mebbe they should expand upwards towards tioga with a drive-in as well. Bed bath and beyond would look nice next door. Heck, let's widen 120 so as we can get there faster from the west...

Place is a ungainly, multi-colored eyesore serving comfort food that only a snob would rank above the typical greasy spoon because of its presentation and the other people around them clucking and fluttering about “the food.” Shoulda been built down 395, if at all.

My final analysis:

Good business strategy (or strategies):

*Employ relatively friendly dudes and girls that are good looking enough that you want to come back, but not so good looking as to seem unattainable to the average climber. [An entire thesis could be written about the general theme of attractiveness optimization in hospitality.]
*Comp people a drink every now and then.
*Hammer INCESSANTLY the word "gourmet" in all publicity, ensuring that it is inevitably the word chosen to describe the food when one person is describing it to another. This place has a lock on the viral use of the word "gourmet". Truly unbelievable.
*Create a cult of personality around your chef. We live in the era of TV-chef fame, and if someone has a brand they must be good. The simple idea of having a dude (with his own caricature, no less!) called TIOGA TOMMY is a selling point to people who generally sit home watching Food Network and HGTV, and for whom this trip, passing through or near Lee Vining, is a BIG DEAL (tm).

But the reality (realities):

*The service is whack, and gets more so every year. They are at a disadvantage given that their front of house and back of house collide spectacularly from a pure proximity perspective (alliteration!). At this price point they need a system whereby I get a table tent with a number and I get my food delivered. While their cashpeople are fairly consistent, the dude calling orders is always a flavor of the week/month and is inevitably cracking under the pressure of trying to push a backlog of 20 plates out.
*The prices are unconscionable, except when location is considered. Still no excuse. Their margins have to be very enviable.
*The produce is an shamefully less than fresh, again, at the price point and "gourmet" self-promotion, considering their proximity to farmers in the Owens Valley that can/could provide everything that they use on a near-daily basis.
*The food is QUITE average, relying heavily on salt for flavor.
*Most pertinently, I still eat there a fair bit.

I tried the BBQ joint in Lee Vining (on the West side of 395) for the first time a few weeks back, and as a person who eats meat infrequently and thus insists on quality when I do, I was really pleasantly surprised. The onionn rings are also taystee. The salad bar, though, gets a pass.

the mobile mart is far from perfect but it certainly doesnt deserve the fact less slander and flimsy accusations that some have posted here.
the domaille family risked everything, built the place with there bare hands, and continue to work there butts off to maintain what has become the most iconic summer business in mono county. there story exeplfies the american dream. who ever thinks they have the "planning commision by the balls" should ask dennis domaille about the hoops he had to jump through in order to open for business. im sure he would be happy to tell you.
-the domailles recently gave away 600 coupons for free fish tacos during the recent inyo-mono county blood drive which by the way, tripled the previous years donations.
-i have personaly witnessed dozens of tired and hungry tourists fed left over food for free long after the store has closed.
-over a dozen locals enjoy steady seasonal employment there.
-they could easily prohibit camping on the vista point but instead allow it.(please dont blow that)
i can go on and on about the contributions the domailles have made to the local community. instead i will finish with one final thought.

IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR FRED BECKY, THAN ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!

I've been once. Wasn't that impressed. It seemed overpriced. Maybe my mood. Was supposed to go to Conness but ripping thunderstorms started at about 4 am. By 8 am gave up and went there to have breakfast. Had heard good things so we bypassed TPR. The owner(?) was walking around the eating area killing flies with a fly swatter. Very appetizing! Ended up at the Gorge. Got a few pitches in and got slammed with a cloud burst. Just dumping. Chased everyone out except us and one other party across the Gorge. Had the place to ourselves the rest of the afternoon. Hmmm. maybe the food wasn't that bad after all :)

Although the area was previously a sanctuary from other states plagued by the drug wars, by mid-summer Baja California Sur had the fifth highest murder rate of Mexico's 32 states, even as homicides in the country as a whole hit record levels.

The population in Los Cabos—the municipality encompassing San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas— was about 44,000 in 1990. By 2015 it had risen to about 288,000.

This was the latest imposition of the cartel-fueled violence in Los Cabos. Of the 232 homicide investigations opened by the middle of last summer, those that garnered the most attention were not those in the colonias occupied by Mexican citizens, but those that had spilled into the tourist zones and resort areas. One month earlier at Palmilla resort, a mile up the beach from Zippers, three men had been killed in a grisly shootout with automatic weapons. News reports, even in the Mexican media, focused mostly on these three killings and not the other six that had occurred elsewhere in the state that same weekend.

Following the Palmilla shooting, the managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, Rodrigo Esponda, assured the Los Angeles Times that "unlike the recent terrorists in Europe, Mexico's gangsters rarely purposefully target general society." And yet just two months earlier, the Mexican newspaper Reforma had reported that a mass grave of 18 men and women had been discovered on the road between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo Pulmo National Park on the East Cape—a reminder that these killings are not always so neatly targeted. A number of reports on the Palmilla beach shooting that made their way into the English-speaking media also omitted the fact that, in addition to the three people killed, two bystanders had also been shot and rushed to the hospital.

Food is good, but pricey. I prefer a blue cheese burger and a shake from Mono Cone.

Remember hula hoops? I’ll stick with the Still Life in Independence. I guess I’m just partial
to crotchety owners and genuinely good food. Last we were there she had been slow cooking her stew for 2 days.

Tend to agree, but they do serve a better breakfast than Nicely's.
Safest thing I found to eat at Nicely's is the oatmeal.

Mono Mart biscuits, burritos, or pastries for breakfast, Mono Cone Western Bacon Cheeseburger, Mono Mart burritos, or Epic Cafe (a little pricey but delicious) for lunch and dinner!
