My son turned 5 yesterday;.....He's grown up around climbing and climbers;.....seems like just yesterday we took him home from the hospital. Happy Birthday, Beck.....you RULE...and you ROCK....we love you! He wanted to go see the new Transformer movie for his birthday, and he got a Nintendo ds for his birthday present....I'm saving up for the Russian mail-order bride for his 16th birthday,....I want to be alive when I have grandkids.....

Happy Birthday Beck!

You are so lucky to have been born into such a great and powerful tribe. There are many great warriors with many moons behind them in this tribe. Your father is one of them.

We expect much from the young ones in our tribe. We expect you to grow to be strong and brave. Not so much the strong and brave of the muscles and the spear, but strong and brave of the heart. We expect you to grow up to have a great love of freedom, and no fear of what lies over the next ridge. We expect you to be smart and have a great love of your family. We expect you to be a deep soul and have a great respect for our mother, the Earth. We expect you to care enough about the tribe that you will be all these things and help to guide us into the future when it is your turn to carry the sacred torch.

Welcome to your time of growing.

I can't believe Beck is 5!!! Happy Birthday!!!

I have to admit that when he was born the way I remembered his name was Beck's beer. I'm guessing that's not what he was named after...

Anyway, it looks like you guys had a great family celebration. Way to go!

Y'know Beck, sometimes when the light's just right, even adults catch a glimmer of your world. You do know, I can just tell. Not too often of course -- can't expect too much -- but once in awhile you catch 'em at it, just staring far away sometimes, or getting silly when their big friends come over. Or you can see it in your daddy's eyes when he reads you a story or when he's getting ready to go climbing, or laughing out loud at something he's telling us on the computer.

Well, just now I caught a glint of that in your eyes in your daddy's photos, and it reminded me of something I wrote one day about being...

FIVE

I was five years old that first Sierra day, running on pure whim. From the tent down bright sand to the lapping edge of Tenaya Lake, deliciously cold. Over to a rock. Slap that rock. Laugh and run to a pine tree. Roots. Sap. Rub that sap into the sand. The sand is sharp. It's all bright, brighter than the coast hills of home. Breathe in the brightness, everything quickens. The lake shatters the sun, scattering it up under my Cape Cod hat. Granite domes ring the lake, to keep it from spilling into the sky. I burn off the first of many noses.

We come back every summer. I have a feather sleeping bag, army surplus, nestled just under the eaves of the tent, outside with the stars. In the morning I button my maroon wool shirt right up to the collar, throw chips into the fire, smell coffee. Now I have a brother. Charlie and I hike in the cool woods; we lash rafts to paddle out to each of the rock islands, and fish. I snag a fishhook in my brother's scalp, so we drive all the way down to the hospital in Yosemite Valley.

As my legs get stronger, the Sierra grows...

Last Fri. we are sitting in Mono Hot Springs and these two kids jump in with us and the dad is kinda' standing there a' lookin'. We are with the Battey, Stahl, Binding posse. A little while later down by the main creek Jake and I swim over to a little island and the guy says "are you...?" He's got me pegged but I haven't a clue so I say "yes, but who are you?" He says "I recognized your voice, I'm Doug Smith." Then I instantly recognized his voice and mug. It had been at least 25 years. He is a Geo Prof in Monterrey, they were all super cool.
