Best wikipedia entry ever...he quit his job at HAAGEN-DAZS:
After joining Black Flag in 1981, Rollins quit his job at Häagen-Dazs, sold his car, and moved to Los Angeles, California. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Rollins got the Black Flag logo tattooed on his left bicep[3] and changed his surname to Rollins, a surname he and MacKaye had used as teenagers.[9] Rollins was in a different environment in Los Angeles; the police soon realized he was a member of Black Flag and he was hassled as a result. Rollins later said "That really scared me. It freaked me out that an adult would do that. [...] My little eyes were opened big time."[10]
Before concerts, as the rest of band tuned up, Rollins would stride about the stage dressed only in a pair of black shorts, grinding his teeth; to focus before the show he would squeeze a pool ball.[11] His stage persona impressed several critics; after a 1982 show in Anacortes, Washington, Sub Pop critic Calvin Johnson wrote: "Henry was incredible. Pacing back and forth, lunging, lurching, growling; it was all real, the most intense emotional experiences I have ever seen."[12]

Fluoride, if you are into classic punk, last night's show (6/27) was a must-hear. The Saints, Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, to more familiar classics like the Pistols & Blondie... Rollins is my radio hero!

I loved his stand up/spoken word bits. I think he called ronnie james dio a "little evil gnome" and when you get depressed you can go into a dark room and write dark poetry on black paper with black ink and it'll all be good.
Last I saw him was as the cop in the movie "The New Guy".

I love his music and spoken word, cant stand his acting.
He was the best singer for Flag.
I allways thought it funny that he and Ian were pals growing up considering the sheer volume work they would eventually put out.
Best song with Black Flag-"My War"
Best song solo-"Disconnect"
Best colaberation-"We are 138" w/ the Misfits.

I saw his spoken word act at the orpheum last october. no opener, he walked on and launched into his thing and for two straight hours did not let up. he must have stopped to take a breath at some point, but I didn't notice it. a thoughtful man, the things he has to say always resonate with me. he inspires one to be a more honest, principled person.
my favorite story of his was of his trip on the trans-siberian railroad. he sees an open spot in his schedule, and immediately fills it with a painful, cold experience. "vacation? who wants to vacate themselves? who would honestly want to sit and do nothing? when I have free time, I don't want to sit and do nothing. I want something visceral. I want pain and struggle and fear." that's paraphrased, but you get the idea.
if mark twight was a singer, he would have been henry rollins.

I read a great interview with him after the Rollin's Band album "Come in and Burn" (KILLER if you like metal) where he said he basically does music to keep his small publishing imprint alive (it bleeds money) because he believes in putting out these books that no-one will touch. Always made me want to find out what his imprint was and buy some titles...

Saw Henry front Black Flag in '85. Wild, wild show. Too close to one of the bloodiest fights I've ever seen...
Anyhoo, Henry was pretty bulked up and piped, stomping around on stage with that "search and destroy" tatoo on his back.
He did a piece on, I seem to recall, the first gulf war that was pretty interesting. I've enjoyed his musings...and miss the Indie 103 thing too. Pretty big void but I guess he still does a radio show. Good taste in music (!).
His duet with Shatner is a riot..."I can't get behind that". Hilarious.
Uncle Tupelo does a great cover of "gimme gimme gimme"...

TTR, that fanzine article is great...which one is it? What is he, 22 y/o in those pix? Some of the more priceless comments:
DO YOU TAKE DRUGS? No, I don't because I don't like them....I don't care what anybody else does so I don't smack joints our of other people's hands.
DO YOU LIKE BEING ALIVE?: I like to be alive. I don't think that I would try to kill myself....I don't hate people, I just have a general dislike for people.

No a big fan of the music, (just not my thing) except the song where he screams "I am a liar".
But, loved a couple of interviews with him. He just kept tearing into U2 and how bad the rhythm section is. It just seems to be a touchy subject for him.
Definitely doesn't pull punches, you got to like that nowadays!

It was never the same for me when I found out Rollins was gay. All the Black Flag angst took on a new meaning and sorta left me in the back row. Too bad really, 'cuz if I knew he was gay from the get-go, I probably would have continued to like his stuff down through the ages.

Punk icon HENRY ROLLINS is furious when his sexuality is questioned - because he's never met anyone as blatantly "un-gay" as himself.
The former BLACK FLAG frontman is constantly being interviewed by homosexual magazines and is weary of denying rumours he's gay because he believes his tough appearance and heterosexual lovelife speaks for itself.
He complains, "I get interviewed by gay magazines at least six times a year and the first question is always, 'Are you gay?'. No. 'Are you sure?'. Yes.
"I ask why there's such a desire for me to be gay and they say, 'Because your hair's short, you're in shape, you're hot and you're smart.'
"In America it's a put down, like, 'Oh he's such a fecking fairy'. So here I am with the tattoos and a thick neck, talking sh*t. God, if you only saw how un-gay I am. I've never had a homosexual experience - and I could have had all the ones I wanted."

Russ nailed it! I didn't know he was gay either nttawit, but it puts a different bent on things, he is always so direct, so ernest, did he come out a long time ago and just not make a big deal of it? Or was he in the closet? Kinda makes a difference ..... given his tendency to call people to honesty....
He was good in Johhny Mnemonic, though, in a preference neutral kind of way.
Ice T kicked Ass, too. it would have been better had he (HR, or IT) starred in it, and let that throw away, Keanu, twist in the wind.

Next Time Lyrics
I saw this cat leave my pad
And this made me awful sad
But in the mean time I was gettin` mad
And I said,"Baby what explanation do you have?"
She said, "Mmmmmmm, Next Time"
What do you mean Next Time?
No next time baby, that ws the last time
I got my hat and headed for the door
I knew I wouldn`t be back there no more
And the landlord came up a real cool jed he said,
"Hey buddy, how bout the rent?"
I said, "Mmmmmmmm, Next Time"
What do you mean Next Time?
He said no next time, you gonna pay me right now
Now after the confusion had all died down
I figured I`d better get outta town
But when I arrived at the airport
There stood a man with a notice sayin`
Failure to support
I said, "Mmmmmmm, Next Time"
What do you mean Next Time?
He said no, next time, you comin` home right now
They took me to see an old friend of mine
Yeah district court, room 229
Just say your payments are way behind
I said, "Don`t worry daddy, it won`t happen next time."
And he said, "Mmmmmmmm, Next Time."
What do you mean Next Time?
Ain`t gonna be no next time, cuz you goin` to jail right now."

COOL! I I I
I I
I saw them play in North Tahoe around 84". At some Podunk bar. I rushed in cause I had to take a Schat. When I came out of the stall embarrassed from having to use my sock to wipe because there's no paper. I looked up to see Henry and some big dude standing at the urinals. When the big dude looked at Henry's back and saw the tatto say'in "search and destroy". He said that should say "skate and destroy". Well, Henry proceeded to shake it off.
Then turned grabbed the guy, threw him across the room against the wall. Ran over and knee'd him on his way out the door. I looked at the big dude. He just yelled "YEAH HENRY!"
He was stoked! We ran out to the front of the stage to find Henry pacing. We stood there the rest of the night. I was mostly enthralled by the hot young bassist!!
I still like to hear them when I bust out my skate!
Henry is a prodigal son!
