Great video! I love the over-the-shoulder belay and the sketch simulclimbing. But the best part is the old guy (guided client?) smokin a bowl at the top! Great shots of the Petit Dru and Grande Jorasse at the end.

Wow. Three wonderful historic videos.
Comici (meaning comedian or comic in Italian, oddly enough) moved wonderfully over stone, didn’t he. The homecoming of Bonatti piece makes it clear what Maestri ( about the same age as Bonatti) experienced when he came back from his first supposed ascent of Cerro Torre in 1959, and how distorted that story became.
Thanks Surv!

Yes, that's quite a procession with Bonatti et al.
Why, I remember the time Carter and I, (while solemnly descending Lembert's slabs after a glorious ascent of Truck 'n Drive) were greeted by a similarly ecstatic entourage.
Bona Fortuna !!!
Let's get some more of these way old school film clips linked up...

I tried to find some clips from Whillans, Joe Brown, Tom Patey.
I'm sure there must be something from Old Man of Hoy.
Yes! Comici with no rack: so pure, so suave.

I like to imagine all these guys coming in to a local gym to get checked out for their belay card: "No...no...you kids are doing it all wrong! You hold the coil in the left hand, and you gather in the slack with the right! Unless you're belaying the leader, in which case you hold the coil in the left hand and feed it out with the right! But when things get really dicey, feed the rope out from behind your neck."

I once failed a belay test in a gym in Texas. I think Gaston would have given me a belay card straight away, no questions asked.
