Hike from Porcupine Flats to North Dome; about a quarter mile of firm snow; the rest of the trail is dry (well, actually some muddy sections too).

Ski report
Monday 25 May

Yesterday skied cross country past Bennetville (between Tioga Pass Resort and Saddleback Lake road)
NE slopes still decent, suncups not too bad.
Talked to other parties who skied False White yesterday, it was still pretty good but going fast.
The really high slopes look excellent still (North and East facing).
Except for Ellery Bowl which had a lot of exposed rocks and recent slide activity up high.

TPR restaurant open to usual high standards. YUM. My wife broke her diet first time in 2 months (so did I, but we'd earned it).

A LOT of scattered snow all over east slopes of Cathedral.
Looked as if entire first pitch of "regular" Fairview route was under a snow tongue. Didn't walk in to have a better look.

Everything higher than Cathedral is snow covered on North and East

Really beautiful up there yesterday.

We climbed on Stately Pleasure Dome, which is almost all dry, and on Pywiack, where the west end is fine. Lembert looks good too. the weather is awesome - cool , perfect temperatures, sunny, and gorgeous.

Simeon - we just got on a few routes - came up late Saturday and met friends at Daff for a little cragging:

Then we went to Bishop to visit friends, got a little bike ride in Sunday - got pretty rough at a few spots...can anyone name the location?:

Got up to Tuolumne around 11 on Sunday, and we headed up here:

Skipped this 5.10 that James & Max put up a few years ago, despite how inviting it looked as a green-slime coated waterfall (what the heck is it called James?):

Skipped this 5.11R that Werner put up - Universal Corner:

Skipped this 5.12 roof traverse that Shipoopi put up, Engine in Distress - it still has a couple 1/4" bolts with Leepers as the anchor:

Skipped this newer 5.12 with loads of bolts, Schoen's knob-breaking Mocha Velvet Stout (edited: had the name wrong):

And went right to this lowly "single-digit" route (as Joe calls them) - only 5.9:

Starting up the second pitch:

On the way down:

Someone down on the Dike route:

Man, what cool photo's, I must go to Toulumne soon. The bike route looks like Lower Rock Creek Trail. I rode it two weeks ago, what a blast! Hey that looks like the spot I went over my handlebars and stacked.

I was up there last weekend. How can you NOT go there once the pass opens up? Plenty of routes that don't face north that are open and up for grabs (only one party on all of Stately Pleasure).

Lots of standing snow still near the entrance from the 395 side and water flowing everywhere in the meadows.

TPM/TPG is closed as well as the campground (which appeared flooded at the entrance gate.

I guess I saw Greg's party, as there were actually a healthy number of cars at the Daff pullout later in the day Saturday. Didn't see anyone on WC or CA so figured it was craggin'.

Have plenty of photos, maybe will have time later tonight or tomorrow AM to download. They're still in my cam.

Cheers to Tuolumne '09. Hope everyone has a great season up there!

Cool James! That missed the '06 Reid/Falkenstein guide, so if you don't watch out, a future Ed is going to be listing it as an old obscurity only rumored to have been done somewhere between Tenaya Lake and South Whizz Dome...

Greg - The location of your bike ride is the old Silver Canyon trail/abandoned road. Did you ride all the way up that thing, or do a car shuttle?
Greg Barnes

Topic Author's Reply - May 27, 2009 - 10:58am PT
Yep, that's the spot! I cheated and got a shuttle (to Schulman Grove), then rode back that way while everyone else hiked the 4+ mile loop, so I beat them back to Bishop even stopping all over the place. I've done it from the bottom a few times, and one time from Westguard pass. No bighorn this time, but I've run into them a couple times on the old road.

Nor Cal, it's the obvious black corner (well, black once the waterfall dries up and the green algae dries out) above the up trail at Phobos/Deimos. Ask James if you want details on what it's like!

Hey Greg is that the ride down the front that ends up at the Laws Museum? We've done the shuttle ride down the back side which was pretty cool but not as hairball as the front side is supposed to be.

You said You Asked For It? Photos from the first-ascent-with-a-3/8"-bolt-kit (yep, Drew led with a 3/8" bolt kit and bolt pulling gear, then hung on one original bolt while pulling & drilling out the other hole!):

The second pro bolt on the first pitch - yeah, I know, the camera was not exactly pro quality:

Leading the 2nd pitch - Karin's belaying, and I'm waiting for Drew to place one good bolt at the next anchor before I replace the 2nd bolt at this one:

msiddens - not Lower Rock Creek (although I did ride that at dusk on Saturday) - it's the old Silver Canyon road in the Whites.

Better late than never, here's some pics from last weekend. I'll omit the good dome and route shots as for the most part they're already posted, so here's some snow overview:

Third Pillar:

Still lots of snow as you approach the kiosk:

Meadows looking wet and under melt-out:

More:

Why is the store still closed?

Pretty Tenaya:

Bear Creek Spire...just because. Cruised by there on the way up to Tuolumne. Still plenty of snow:

Tenaya peak on 6/06/09 , Still some big patches of snow making most of the lower portion of the route wet .

I went up to go do Cathedral , the approach is wet but you can bypass the snow pretty easy . I went up in tennis shoes . The base and route are basically snow free. The descent still has solid snow up near the top . It got very cold on the route and my fingers went numb so i bailed . A very cold day on Saturday

Wet and cold , with some snow at the pass.

Still prefer being there wet and cold than just about any other place !

It's pretty easy, upload the photo - you don't even have to re-size it if you pick this: Reduce to: 640 x 480 (Large)

in the upload images & video screen on photobucket. Then copy the bottom-most of the 4 that pop up below the shot when you hold your mouse over it (the IMG code), and paste it here - and here you go:

Speaking of Hoffman, I notice that Secor mentions a couple of 5.7 routes: Merle Alley Route (north face) and the East Face. Anyone ever done them ?

There is still a fair amount of snow above 10 thousand feet in Tuolumne.

this is taken (6/20/09) from the top of Cathedral, looks like the approach to mathes crest would be wet.
