Miles Dewey Davis born today, 1926.

That is absolutely what I'm talking about, Thanks, Goat!

I know it doesn't work for a lot of people, but that is for me, as exciting as music gets.

i listen to Bitches Brew at least once a week. just got the full 4 cd set, lots of excellent stuff not included on the original release.

miles was a crusty mofo, for sure. i can't remember what track it is on the BB box set, but at the beginning you hear the producer ask "is this number four or five?" or something to that effect. then you hear miles, obviously irritated, say "no it's number nine...WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?" i always crack up hearing that. i think it might be on the track "guennivere"?

There will never be another one like him. He may have been the best bandleader of all time because so many of his guys were stars when they left to do their own thing.
If you like Miles you MUST buy "Miles Electric: Another Kind of Blue" This is the story of how Miles turned electric. The highlight is the entire Isle of Wight set.

I just recently was asked to study and learn a transcription (written in bass clef) of miles solo from So What. I was amazed to find nothing faster than an eighth note and maybe one or 2 non chord tones. It boggles my mind how he can take such simple scales, do almost nothing out of the ordinary to them(on one run he hits a flat 5th) and make it sound like you have never heard D dorian before in your life. It was by far the simplest transcription I have had to learn and at the same time one of the most expressive solos ever cut.

Gil Evans said "He is a great singer of songs"
Miles was never about technique just about playing a song.
About the race thing: some black musicians were complaing about Miles hiring white musicians in the late 60's. Miles said "Find me a brother who can play like John McLaughlin and i will hire both of them" Also "I don't care if someone has green skin and red breath as long as he can play"
Miles just wanted respect. Imagine what some racist white cop thought when he saw Miles crusing in a Ferrari with a beautiful white woman. Cop magnet for sure

miles embodies a phenomenon rarely demonstated so clearly.

carve out your space with deeds that topple in a resounding fashion and authority may be assumed by way of wisespread deference. call it shock and awe.

miles demands to be heard, nuance pays the freight

I only saw Miles in concert once. It was at the celebrity theatre in Phoenix, Az, during 'Tutu' days.

The Music was fantastic, I can hear 'Time after time," in my head, from the show, right now, as I type.

Miles (that Kantankorus Bastid) was too cool to actually speak in that show. When he got to the point of introducing the band he, would merely point at the person, and wait for the applause; the keyboardist, the bass player, etc. Then, at the end, he raised his hand in the air and pointed down at his own head, to thundering applause. It was humble and arrogant at the same time. Shittalkers the world over should take advice from him, and he never spoke a word, and he had the goods to back it up. Happy day after Miles day!

I've always thought it would be really cool to see someone do a documentary on the “family tree” of Miles, i.e. all the musicians that came through his band, his influence on them and in turn their influence on others. He was like a scouting agent for the jazz word. He had an amazing knack for progressing into new realms without looking back. It’s too bad that he and Jimi never got together, it would have been good. Miles wrote about the possibility in his autobiography.

So long Miles.

By the way, I have a close friend - Matthew Sand - a fellow climber and screenwriting machine who's uinder studio contract to pen a movie on Miles, with some big hitters attached (can't remember who).

I thoght Miles was particularly fine when he had Bill Evans on board.

Saw Miles at the Isle of Wight in 1970. Amazing.

Heard an interview (his voice was so raspy, full of character).

In the interview he makes a point of telling the audience that when he went into the studio it was to take the music further. They were not just cutting another disc they were raising the stakes on ALL that had proceeded them.

He implied that the prep and the knowledge of what had gone into music should be fully understood before one cuts his own.

Impressive.

In the unauthorized bio of Miles that I read, he is quoted as saying that after Isle of Wight, he went back to London to await Jimi with whom he had plans for some colabaration recordings, unfortunately for the universe, that was when Jimi, passed on to the other side. What would have come of that? the mind boggles! imagine those guys sharing a wawa!

Lynne, had Miles been a a climber, he would have kicked all our asses, but he would have sent us all on a mission to find the climbing that means the most to each one of us.

Actually Miles and Jimi played together on a few occasions at Miles' house. They were good buddies but their planned recording didn't happen due to business details.

He would have been 89 yesterday!

Without Bitches Brew to lead me in, I might never have followed the thread to find jazz. Life without Coltrane?

I only saw him once, in The Celebrity theatre in Phoenix. Perfect small venue for him I thought. He never spoke a word, even when he introduced the band. Kept his visor like shades on the whole time.
Did he ever play with P-funk?

My vote for flat out, the most important, most influential musician of the twentieth century.

Bazo, what Taylor was really referring to was Miles came from wealth. His father was a dentist; the family owned properties and were actually a kind of American nobility. So he came by his stunning, powerful attitude early on. Yeah, I saw him too; it was in the mid-Sixties at The Greek.

Maybe the best of the best live shows.

New Years 1980!

We were going to be six white folk in Harlem then two of the girls chickened out
As I recall this left us way over supplied, not wanting to waste the wasting sauce,
We shared our real Moët, with a homeless vet
Who was so happy and lept around saying "yup good god, the real sh!t!"

At the show, tin foil and bindles of blow were passed up and down the rows for all who wanted to,To share!

MILES, has been a part of my children's musical background and now at the teen years they know from what is real great sounds as opposed to the canned crap of their friends .
