The Reagan years still saw a deficit due to spending increases but Federal tax reciepts went up.

Which was, to quote the great economist, George Bush, VooDoo Economics.

All occurred by the gov't borrowing and printing money. Huge increase in the debt. YOU are still paying off those loans that he took out.

Those who question ksolem's assertion about taxes and spending might want to check the data on tax receipts vs. expenditures. Tax receipts have stayed about 19% of GDP, even with lower marginal rates, but the economy grew, so overall receipts increased substantially.

Unfortunately, neither party has been able to restrain spending, hence the deficit.

Contrary to the assertions of the class warriors, the issue is whether we maintain current rates or increase them for some parts of the economy. The Republicans, backed by solid econometric evidence, believe that increasing tax rates now would lead to economic disaster. The left, backed by class-hatred rhetoric, doesn't seem to care.

government should be limited and the legislative process should be slow and deliberative and no law should be longer than the civil rights bill (65 pages) and no politician should be allowed to vote on a bill until they pass a test verifying they know what's in the bill:

I know what McCain would do with this situation

He would backpedal on his previous commitment to prove himself to the far right while appointing incredibly inexperienced people to important positions where they rapidly outshine him. I assume that's why you worked so hard to get him elected. Anyway, back to your principled jubilation at adding billions of more dollars to the debt in the name of tax cuts for the rich.

Republicans Block U.S. Health Aid for 9/11 Workers

WASHINGTON — Republican senators blocked Democratic legislation on Thursday that sought to provide medical care to rescue workers and residents of New York City who became ill as a result of breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke from ground zero.

The 9/11 health bill, a version of which was approved by the House of Representatives in September, is among a handful of initiatives that Senate Democrats had been hoping to approve this year before the close of the 111th Congress. Supporters believe this is their last real opportunity to have the bill passed.

The Senate action created huge uncertainty over the future of the bill. Its proponents were working on Thursday to have the legislation inserted into a large tax-cut bill that Republicans and Democrats are trying to pass before Congress ends it current session later this month.

Republicans have been raising concerns about how to pay for the $7.4 billion measure, while Democrats, led by Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York, have argued that the nation had a moral obligation to assist those who put their lives at risk during rescue operations at ground zero.

Tax cuts for rich people? No problem let's borrow the money from China! Healthcare for 9/11 veterans? F*#k no we can't do that without paying for it in a manner that does not include closing tax loopholes for foreign corporations. There are principles at stake after all!!

I don't see how you can't see the insane hypocrisy and callous manner in which Republicans have handled the last week.

Do you even know what that means? Or do you just like that someone is blaming Obama for something in a way that allows you to ignore the fact that Republicans completely just blew off any attempt at deficit reduction solely to give the richest 1% a tax cut?

I know what I would do, spin up a few cruise missiles. Right now, even before Iran ships anything, right on Chavez's head.

Gosh, I think I would actually get some verification of the information before doing ANYTHING.

And then, If it were really true, the LAST think that I would do would be to start killing people. As Colin Powell says (someone who actually knows something about fighting, instead of posturing) missles and bombs are terribly indistriminate things. When they go off, you don't know who they are going to kill, friends, enemies, who. You need to be very sure of where you are sending them.

By the way, Powell actually has experience in leading military forces and making military decisions, unlike McCain, who never rose to a command rank (but doesn't let that stop him from giving mavericky opinions)

Thank God you were not in charge when the Russian missles went into Cuba.....

Its a SHAME the Federal Government doesn't have a similar requirement.

Yeah, then we could have just skipped WWI, WWII, and the Great Depression.
Woulda been much more fun, and we all would be using German Marks!
