A booklet of mountain/climbing poems by Dick Culbert was recently published, by Tricouni Press. Dick was one of the leading explorers and mountaineers of B.C.'s Coast Ranges from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. He is also an accomplished writer. Some of his poems written during that period were recently rediscovered, and published in a 96 page booklet entitled "The Coast Mountains Trilogy".

Most of the poems had never previously been published. They are in a variety of metres and styles. Three – Land of Lichen, Land of Lakes, and Land of Ice – form the trilogy, together with another dozen poems on a variety of mountain themes. It may be the first book of Canadian and perhaps even North American (U.S. & Canada, anyway) mountain poems.

It includes an introduction by Glenn Woodsworth, and pen and ink drawings by Arnold Shives, both Dick’s contemporaries, and well-known mountaineers in their own right.

Very good reading, and would be fun to read aloud around a campfire, and a nice addition to the libraries of addicts of mountaineering literature.

Here's the cover of the book, including a period drawing by Arnold Shives.
Arnold went on to become a well-known artist, primarily on mountain and outdoor themes. See http://ccca.ca/artists/artist_work.html?languagePref=en&link_id=94&artist=Arnold+Shives

And an excerpt from one of the poems - there are about 60 pages of poems altogether.

If you're interested, send me a note and I can provide information on how to order a copy from Glenn. About C$20.

Nice post Anders. Not very many books of mountain poetry out in the world and this one seems like a great read. Thanks for sharing it.

The books are nominally C$15.95, but I don't know what the cost is for shipping and handling. Reasonable, I'd think.
