Just skip to the second page, He loaded two or three nukes on the first page in a tirade against off topic threads. Anybody with a smaller system or a dialup connection will get a LONG delay at best.
The thread drift has moved to HAM Radio, and there is a really cool collection of OLD QSL cards being displayed.

Windows Xp 32 bit can only handle 4 gigs of ram max.

NAH!
Russ' two images, while huge-ish on the photo front, were notably smaller than most all of the YouTube vids regularly posted locally. a couple megs. that and they were standard jpeg -- no way you can hide malicious executable code in a functional jpeg (and they were functional -- as i saw them).
so no way they "damaged" anyone's mac, or peecee, or cray xv. at worst, those images might have taken a rather looong time to load for those with their mac's set to do full image/full pixel display via some upscale aftermarket imaging app. porn bores me so i don't have my rig set up like that.
my wimpy little road laptop (a fay peecee, 2g ram) handled it just fine -- though i admit i didn't get to see da'bomb in its full apacolyptic magnificence. given the state of things in pakistan, perhaps i'll soon get to see the real thing. outstanding.
so relax kids, your voodoo boxes are just fine. better to worry about the purity of your precious bodily fluids. that and learn to love the bomb...

Always save the work you do on the machine while your working every minute or so. If you don't and have an operating system crash or power failure you will lose that work.
Without actually saving your work to hard drive while working on a document it is only saved in volatile ram.
When ram (memory) loses power ...... all work gone, unless saved to hard drive first.

Buddhist master?
I have nothing to do with Buddhism. Where you get that idea?
Buddhism is actually atheistic because it is incomplete "ahimsa" but himsa is required.
From the Bhagavatam we understand that Lord Buddha is the incarnation of Krishna who appeared when materialism was rampant and materialists were using the pretext of the authority of the Vedas. Although there are certain restrictive rules and regulations regarding animal sacrifice for particular purposes in the Vedas, people of demonic tendency still took to animal sacrifice without reference to the Vedic principles. Lord Buddha appeared to stop this nonsense and to establish the Vedic principles of nonviolence.
He deluded the atheists because such atheists who followed his principles did not believe in God, but they kept their absolute faith in Lord Buddha, who himself was the incarnation of God. Thus the faithless people were made to believe in God in the form of Lord Buddha. That was the mercy of Lord Buddha: he made the faithless faithful to him.
To such bewildered persons of atheistic propensity, Lord Buddha is the emblem of theism.
Lord Buddha superficially denied the authority of the Vedas. This rejection of the Vedas by Lord Buddha was adopted in order to save people from the vice of animal killing as well as to save the poor animals from the slaughtering process of their big brothers who clamor for universal brotherhood, peace, justice and equity. There is no justice when there is animal killing.
Technically Lord Buddha's philosophy is called atheistic because there is no acceptance of the Supreme Lord and because that system of philosophy denied the authority of the Vedas. But that is an act of camouflage by the Lord. Lord Buddha is the incarnation of Godhead. As such, he is the original propounder of Vedic knowledge.
He therefore cannot reject Vedic philosophy. But he rejected it outwardly ...

There was no malicious intent towards any computer philo.
Do you even read?
It did not crash my machine nor when I rebooted into Mac Os X leopard. You're being an idiot and a drama queen.
If there was a malicious intent then it would have crashed my machine and others. But it didn't.
It only hung machines that were already weak and vulnerable due to low ram and or low resources. Those machines will cause trouble again for their owners down the line.
At one point there were actually two of those nuke files in that thread at approximately 11 megabytes of jpg file to render. My browsers and operating systems both windows and Mac Os X handled them fine with no problems.
If there really was a malicious intent, then it would have crashed my machine or my anti virus would have caught it.
Again .... philo your case is mute.

mia culpa. i got i little "irish" on that one. of course OS/X was the work of hundreds of people. perhaps thousands is more to the point, given its distinct unix ancestry.
but this young guy was at the very heart of it at apple at the time, of that i am certain. for he never talked about it, not at all his style. rather it was many of his then apple OS peers who worked with him every day who told me at b'man that he was doing much of the heaviest lifting, just then.
i deleted that post after i called him to confirm my read on Gen. Ripper's Plan R. i deleted it because he asked me to.
~~~
i will say this for him: he followed "Needle Spoon" in the meadows without a fall on his fourth day of actually climbing anything. a soft, if excellent .10a -- yet still no small thing on day 4 of one's climbing career. he is a fine and modest guy (at the time, maybe 24). me, i'm neither; and apparently a Luddite.
The problems people encountered had nothing to do with the type of computer they are using (or better said, "less so") except that those with less ram run into problems more frequently. Nor could it harm anyone beyond a simple reset.
It was an overflow buffer issue combined with a video driver issue. IMHO. Why? How the hell do I know.
When people have many things open (read instances of browsers and tabs plus other crap) your OS will need to reconfigure your memory paging at times. This can take a lot of time depending on ... well depending all kinds of things.
When you open your browser your operating system allocates a certain amount of space for it to operate within. When you run over that allotment your system needs to deal with it. And needs to do it in conjunction with the video driver and hard drive swap space which may also be having problems with the size of the file.
Doing so can be quite a pain because often your operating system will have to discard other things that don't work very well while all this is going on. And thus the fight ensues. It can become a outright "virtual knock down drag out."
Think of CMack trying to contain all of us at the same time.
Or even better:
Think of taking Tami out of the car and trying put someone else in. And even worse the whole time you are slamming Tami's head into the steering wheel while trying to keep people from crawling in from the passenger side and at the same time you are trying to put someone in the backseat before the door is open and then along comes someone who locks the doors and Tami thinking she gets to come out crawls out the window and only gets halfway before someone else rolls up the window thinking it would be warmer by doing so......
As you can see, well, it just gets all ugly and sh#t.
What is the matter with you people...? If you don't want to read or write on an OT thread, then don't click on it. If you're machine can't handle the nuke, then get some RAM (it's cheap). The nuke image is harmless. My machine is almost ten years old and it gets it down just fine. Both sides of this debate are being retarded. I'm going climbing. Later.
So if I understand this; Russ posted a big picture that causes Macs to seize up?
So Russ, if it screws with people you didn't intend to mess with why not delete it?
I don't have major computer skills. Do you want to chase me away too?
I just started an OT thread; you gonna dictate what everyone gets to discuss?
I'm gonna post this in this thread too - Just for clarity sake...
"I beg to differ.
Philo had a valid complaint that Russ was bombing
users. You may not agree with what people say
on the taco stand, but one doesn't go out creating problems
for other users that screw up their computers.
If Russ has done this he ought to be banished."
God damnit! I'm so fed up with hearing this BS, from people who don't know what the f*#k they are talking about. Russ did not do ANY damage to Philo's PC. It's simply not f*#king possible. Hardman's description of the "incident" was pretty much right on.
Maybe one of you "braniacs" would like to explain to me in a technical/scientific way, how it is possible for someone posting a (not so) large picture to a forum to do ANY damage to a PC (or Mac)...
The simple truth is that if ANYTHING happened to Philo's PC, it had nothing to do with Russ, or Philo's having entered that thread. About the worst that could happen is if he (Philo) had a total piece of sh#t computer, or maybe some bad ram or something. The PC would have hung and he'd have had to reboot. If he was too stupid be saving his work as he went and lost work during the reboot, that's kind of his own issue. It also sounds to me like he shouldn't be building his own PC's, as he said he was, over and over, if he keeps having the same issue (over and over). Plain and simple.
You guys whining about what Russ did and supporting some notion that it could damage a PC are clueless and ill advised, and your posts come across as pathetic. Like an overly protective parent. Let poor wittle Phiwo fight his own battles and stand up on his own two feet. It's unfortunate that you guys can't see through someone who obviously didn't get enough attention when they were little and the *real* reasons behind their need to post some dramatic, soap opera bullsh#t, in order to get more attention before they "leave". Rest assured, as with all of the other "Poor me, nobody wuvs me, I'm running away from home!" threads, Philo will be back.
edit: And if you have hardware/OS that isn't capable of loading a 5Mb image, you don't *deserve* to be online. The days of Lynx and text based Internet are over, bitches!
Wake the fuk up. It was a picture. It was nothing but a picture. It does not harm your hardware, in fact it really does nothing but take a minute to load the image.
And no Ron, you are not even on the radar so put your possible victim card back in the deck.
Well, not so quick there Russ. I'm not whining about being a victim, but rather concerned about the potential of this practice of yours.
I for one would feel a chilling effect upon my efforts here if I knew that it was acceptable to nuke simply because someone decides that he is the ultimate arbiter rather than saving it as a rarely deployed last ditch effort to fight a more ethical battle.
Ron, as I said in one of the posts lost in drama, I can appreciate effort.
I would never(?) nuke anything that anyone actually put any work into, OT or not. The post that got nuked was something like "phone sabotage" as the header and the original post was just a link. A zero effort post, by Majid.
So I posted a 5mb jpeg to it (as like the second post or something, so nobody was invested in the thread). That is really the end of the story. The rest is wild over reaction because the image took some time to load. Plugs got pulled out of the wall, panic set it, and wild speculation took over. It is such a non-event, that the subsequent fallout should be a case study in group psychosis.
"it had unintended detrimental effects"
No, it didn't. It's that simple. Any "effects" can easily be found to have their root someplace other than Russ' image post.
"exercise a little more restraint?"
Seems more people should exercise a little more brain usage before they go off all half-cocked about something they don't have the slightest grasp of.
Anyhow, I'm done with trying to educate folks. It's kinda like trying to teach a puppy French.
OK, so the first line just makes no sense. It's flat out contradictory to anything I have said, regarding this topic. Use of the "literacy" referenced would probably have sorted that out before you started typing tho.
In regards to the second paragraph - I think it's pretty much common sense that you shouldn't be accusing anyone of ANYTHING, concerning a topic that you don't understand and are not qualified to make any judgments about.
And I hardly see any condescension in the expectation that if you are going to be posting online, and have been for a number of years that you should have gained at least some technical sophistication. Not to mention, that Philo claimed a high level of technical sophistication. Really, however, this all boils down to common sense. There are plenty of folks on here who are not terribly technically savvy, yet they don't get sucked into silly BS like what Philo was claiming.
You guys. . . I am SO sorry I started this thread.
I didn't mean to start such a mess.
I didn't even know Mussy was the bomber. . . I would never do anything to hurt Mussy. . . we've been friends a long time and he's always been nice to me.
But. . . that thread did a number on my LApple. . . I'm kind of a dork when it comes to computers and I admitted that I had a LOT of stuff open. . . but it did recover . . I was just trying to save other people similar frustration.
Are any of you thinking I should just delete this thread?
I'm a little SUTPID right now. . . so I might be missing the full meaning.
Please advise.
I'm so sorry.
Blinny - for future reference, if you ever click on something that causes Safari (or Firefox) to hang,
all you have to do is use the keyboard shortcut Command + Option + esc
(or go to the apple in menue bar and choose Force Quit). This will shut down
the web-browser and nothing else. Or (God forbid) you could just wait a minute or two for it to load.
THERE IS NO REASON TO FORCE-SHUT DOWN THE MACHINE AND LOSE WORK.
In the meantime, it would serve you very well to max out the RAM in your machine.
Shoot me an e-mail with your machine's specs (model and processor speed) and
I'll direct you to a cheap source of RAM.
I guess I see it differently. I see it more as you're yet another person (of the few) who either can't grasp the concept of, or refuses to acknowledge the fact that there is no "chilling potential" and that Russ didn't make any trouble for anyone.
But since you insist on such a train of "thought", here are the addresses for a number of places making millions of dollars off of the very thing Russ did. Maybe you should contact the feds and get them on the case. Surely you'll be considered a hero.
Nef, perhaps you're the one not grasping the concept. (please note I only said perhaps).
The way I see it, if it is both easy and commonly held to be acceptable that anybody can take a mushroom cloud sized dump on what I may have labored to communicate then I am less likely to be inclined to bother.
There are no moderators here, that’s how we like it. Understandably, nobody likes to see his or her posts tampered with, but the side effects of this type of forum is that threads/posts are tampered with ALL the time… people Thread C®ap, delete entire threads, nuke, and other. Nothing at all has changed in the last week.
from a mac tech standpoint-
1) always run yer Time Machine, if you don't yer stoooopid.
2) download the free app "Autosaver" at the apple download center or macupdate.com (http://www.macupdate.com/) and let it run at log in. lifesaver.
3) don't keep so many goddamned windows open, 3 is plenty. running apps in the background is a total waste of RAM power.
4) always view multiple browser windows in tabs, not separate windows, unless you want to watch multiple porn streams at once. but in that situation you only have two hands so what's the point of more than two windows?
5) once every two weeks go to applications>utilities>disk utilities, then select the name of your HD in the left window and click "repair disk permissions". no one knows this but it is like giving your own car an oil change, if you don't do it yer sh#t will breakdown and why pay a for-enn-errrr yer hard earned dough.
6) download "Disk Warrior" from macudate.com and run it once every two weeks.
do all this and you will have a smooth running mac and you won't seem like such a hunched over knuckle dragger to those of us more technically inclined.
if anyone needs a hand, email me through this sheeeaaaaht. i don't know squat about PC's, so don't ask. l8r sk8r's.
Sounds like you understand the technical end but you're not building a bridge as much as mocking those that missed the ferry.
