My 11 yr old daughter, Amber, is solid gold.

An old and very spiritual friend from Oregon called her "an old soul" even when she was a baby. She has a certain kind of seriousness and grace that you don't normally see in a youngster. I certainly don't see the same thing in my other children, although they are wonderful too.

Anyway, every morning, we see the same old homeless woman walking down the street near the kids school. She sometimes has a straggler dog with her, but always has on every layer she owns. It seems as though she sleeps on the zoo grounds somewhere.

This morning Amber made me stop. She jumped out of the car, ran over to this lady and asked her if she would like a nice sweet, crunchy apple for breakfast. The woman said "Yes, thank you. Bless you child.......Merry Christmas."

Amber jumps back in the car having done a small thing for humanity today.

The things I learn from my children....

Well let me chime in on both of Survival's kids--I met them last August during a long overdue visit. The two of them are just awesome. Went for a day of climbing with Survival's family up at Rumney and it was so cool to take a train of 5 up the cliffs. No crying, no whining, and man can those two kids climb. They listen, roll with the punches, and are just a pleasure to be around. What type of kid comes a wake's up one of Dad's climbing buddies and is actually happy to see you?

Just got back from another long overdue visit to New Mex. After knowing Survival for 31 years, we finally got away and tied in together for some craggin. Normally one wouldn't want anything to do with the domestic duties of dropping the kids off at school, going to B-ball practice, or even enduring watching them at their piano lesson..........not the case with this pair. Best part of it was looking at Survival during the piano lesson (while one was getting a little wound up) and telling him "now it's your turn".

These kids are the product of a great Dad whom I've been friends with for many years (and still owes me a climb up the Captain).

I love the name Amber. Good for Buggs! Here is my Amber from a few years ago. She is a firecracker!

We were on one of our family trips years ago. Our oldest was seven, Amber was five and Julia was fit to burst with the soon to be. We went hiking in Zion NP. Our two very independent kids went charging off ahead while we waddled slowly after. We witnessed with a mixture of shock, bemusement and embarrassment as the teaming crowds of hiking tourons would part like the Red Sea and get out of the way of the chattering little fire plug of determination marching their way. These same folks didn't give an inch later as they converged on a very pregnant women. We were the ones obligated to get off they trail for them.
However most of them smiled and asked, "You Amber's?". We figured she had engaged in whirl wind conversation and made a big impression with lots of strangers. She is a pip.

Having a daughter, is the best thing that has ever happened to me. The role of student and teacher is often muddled and interchangeable in the formative years. You bring them up, you share with them all that is possible in this crazy era and then you cross your fingers because it is out of your hands.

Thanks Survival for this most inspiring topic.

Great job fellas!

Guido, that is one of the most amazing posts I've ever seen.
Holy cow, a whole growing up chronicle!! Beautiful.

My latest story is how tough Amber is. Working horses and picking fruit, veggies, hauling hay and such out here on the farm is paying off!!

Her bball team won the gold medals at a super-regional tourney in Denver. Amber iced one game with three out of four free throws in the final seconds. Then, near the end of a game against an older team, Amber stole the ball from the other teams head bully, and it cost her a shot in the mouth. She grabbed her mouth, rubbed it out and kept playing!! She barely missed a beat. People in the stands were hollering about the flagrant foul, but the ref totally missed it. Tough kid.

Bring me some more stories and pix you guys!!

WoooHooo! She'll be back home from a year in Africa in 11 days.

First she sticks them...

then she stickers them.

Her buddies say Hi to Taco Land.
A picture of a younger Cody, aka Booger, is on the previous page.

Cody on stickers:

So before I came to Lesotho, my mom had the brilliant idea of having me bring something small for the children at Paki Health Centre. As a child, the only thing that made a dentist visit worthwhile was at the end, when I got to dig through the treasure box filled with toys, slinkys, sparkly pencils, and bouncy balls.

So...I decided to bring some sparkly stickers. I mean, come on, who doesn't become immediately entranced when someone puts a sparkly thing in front of you.

I try and give a sticker to most of the kids who come in. There is a 7 year old boy named Molise (Mo-dee-say) who has TB and HIV. Every morning, he would come in and I would give him his TB treatment and he would stick his hand up on the counter, waiting for a sticker. I loved it. He finished his TB treatment on April 1, so I don't get to see him anymore. I wish I had a picture of him, but I don't.

Enough of my paternal spray. Carry on.

Received this from Cody this morning:

Well, I have officially left Lesotho.. I am sitting in the Johannesburg airport, waiting for my plane to board in 4 hours. It was so sad and hard to leave :(

Last night, we had a nice farewell dinner, where we all wore our Seshoeshoe dresses. It was beautiful! I will put up pictures when I get home.

Today, on the way to the Maseru airport, I saw a lady running towards our car... then I realized that it was Me' Nthabiseng... She had come to see me go. It was so sad. I lost it, and I started crying. Now, I'm not really a crier, but since I've come to Africa, I've noticed I've cried more... I guess that means that I have changed. I'm more empathetic, compassionate, and vulnerable. And I'm ok with that.

Goodbye Africa. You've been good.

A lot of us have been through the early dating phase with our daughters. Bummer dads, but they grow up way to fast. Silver, Viola will be 16 before you know it!

For those dads who have yet to experience that phenomena I highly recommend the following:

This pic was taken in Redding.

Tonight Amber only played 3 quarters against Yuba City.

14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals.
What daddy couldn't love that?

Good for you Blue!

Amber started at 6. Some kids are born fast, some are born to be tall. She had none of that, she just put her heart down and worked for 10 years. Some folks have no idea what she's been through to get this.

The good news is that she's such a good student that she doesn't need to cross her fingers for an athletic scholarship. She will be a rock star because of her mind, not playing ball.
But as a dad, I can't help but be stoked about her play also...heh heh...

Tad, the people at Foothill were awesome, and great hosts! We lost 2 different games up there by 1 basket, it was rough. But I love going up for that tournament, it's my Bday present to myself.

Thanks for the kind words L. Amber is so cool and sensitive that she didn't even tell her boyfriend about her game, because he had a rough game last night, until he asked.

Thanks for the text Lurker Jefe!

Last night, Amber hit for 17 points against a strong Nevada Union team and we won by 4. Sorry for bragging guys, but when she plays like that I gotta tell somebody!!

WARNING!! BRAG ALERT!! TURN BACK NOW IF'N YOU DON"T WANNA READ MY BRAG!!

Last night Amber hit three, 3 pointers in a row in the 3rd quarter, for the second time in three games!
She led all scorers with 13 points and 6 assists as the Placer girls put a good ol' country ass whoopin' on perennial rival Colfax, 53-15.

Placer clinched the league title as they are now 9-0 in league play.

Did I mention that she's a straight A student with AP classes?

Here's Amber pictured with her boyfriend Kyle.

TJI, yes I'm a daggum Californian now!

Everyone here on this thread has truly amazing daughters. Many/most are more grown up and accomplished than my own.

I'm just a basketball junkie who was blessed with a girl who was too short and too slow, but with a mountain of heart and a desire to share the game with dad. So when she excels at this level, yeah, I'm proud of her.
I can only hope that she grows up to be as awesome as all your daughters!

Ruby doesn't climb too much yet as her dad and brother are a little crazy about it, but if and when she does watch out as she is so strong, smart, tough, and flexible she will tear it up.in her younger years.growing up with three brothers and no sisters has made having a daughter have a steep learning curve, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

There is a fair bit of whining and crying though, but still wouldn't trade it for anything.

Amber is such a quiet and humble girl, and she has done everything from petsitting to babysitting to housework to garden work and more for years, carefully putting away a few dollars every time. She has really earned this and I'm very happy for her.

Awesomeness Update!!

Straight A's and kindness to others continues unabated.

The Placer High girls varsity team won the undisputed Pioneer Valley League Championship with an overall record of 20-6 and a perfect league record of 10-0!!

They beat 2nd place Colfax twice during the season, leaving them with a league record of 8-2. Colfax had a great season too, but we owned them in the second game 50-36.

Here are the champs after the 2nd Colfax game to end the regular season. Amber is number 5 standing far left. She ended up fourth in scoring, hit a dagger 3 pointer in that game and played tougher defense as the season wore on.

With a proud mama.

Now it's on to the San Joaquin Sectional Playoffs!! First round game Tuesday, at home, against East Union, from Manteca.
