From Poised for Grace...
Douglas Brooks writes: Abhinavagupta reminds us that we are limited only by the limitations we mistake for our goals (GAS, 2.45)
Poised for Grace is Douglas' commentary on the Gita. I was reading and flowing right along last night and then I hit that quote. It stopped me in my tracks. I put down my readings and meditated on the quote.
Abhinavagupta was a 10th century Kashmir Shaivite (Tantric) philosopher.

As climbers we do things on the fringe that invite stress and discomfort. I love how this Neruda quote speaks to comfot, but also to things that make us stronger and better people.

As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression.
In both instances, there's a twilight where everything remains
seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we
must be aware of change in the air, however slight,
lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.

At the point in your day of experiencing outdoor challenges, where you finally feel really safe (or safer)-----preferably with food nearby and a drink in your hand:
"Here's to cheating death!"
Or am I off-topic with a toast?
Howabout the one a buddy first uttered in 1975 as I was starting a lead on E. Ridge of Bugaboo Spire:
"See you in Hell Brooks!"
I've used that one ever since on nervous leaders, and friends launching on a dangerous rapid after scouting it.

Don't know her name, but this was said by a young woman to her male partner who was "accidentally" flexing his well developed muscles to show her and the two old farts who'd just shown up at their belay what a hard dude he was.
Totally deflated him. And of course he got completely wigged out on the pitch above which, although only 5.8, was protected by three ancient 1/4" rawl buttonheads in a full ropelength.
