Some 35 years latter this excerpt from former President Gerald Ford's remarks after taking the Oath Of Office as President seems appropriate:

My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.

I should add that for the first time in my life I actually watched the inauguration. Yo-Yo Ma and company were very nice. Though I could do without the religious aspects the benediction was excellent. Senator Feinstien did a very nice job as well.

You can wake up from a nightmare, and realize you have to live with a hangover.

But that's reality. Let's live with it as best we can and make it into an adventure.

Peace

This is also the first inauguration I've watched.

Something in me was dreading something coming up at the last minute, unlikely as I knew that to be.

As my dad likes to say, today is the first day of the rest of our lives.

I can only echo the sentiments of Karl and Forest

To that I'll add my thoughts on the classical arrangement: Copeland's version (Appalachian Spring) of Simple Gifts has always been one of my favs both to play and to hear/feel. In either presentation (Copeland's or the traditional Simple Gifts) I find it to be a rather appropriate - and hopeful - selection.

Yes. The ensemble and the choice were perfect for the time. Play a tape of that performance for your local school board when they try to cut your music program to save a few bucks!

Yes, it turns out that the performances of classical music were bow-synched, due to the cold. Pre-recorded, with the musicians bowing along.

They should have got jstan to play his bagpipes. Now THAT would have been something to see!

Although I gather that bagpipes, if not their players, are quite weather sensitive.

Unless you watch TV, you'd never know anything was different.

TGT,

Your post reflects my pre-election fears, but so far, he's doing OK. I hope he continues doing well. That depends on his ability to keep his congressional friends, or maybe I should say fiends, in check.

As for Yo-Yo Ma, as fine a cellist as he is, he disappoints me in the music that really matters -- the Beethoven Sonatas Ops. 102a and 102b -- but I still liked the ensemble. Overall, it was a good day and a good week, even for this Republican.

I ferverently hope that he's a down and dirty pragmatic Chicago pol, but I fear he's going to be every bit a Carter.

As far as the inaguration,

Aretha, overwrought, (I'l give her slack for the emotion and the cold)

Williams score, somber, depressing

The poet, an embarasing waste of third grade vocabulary

The speech, journeyman in delivery, trite in composition.

The benediction, insulting to those that voted him into office.

The Marines and the Navy, on top of it as always.

Now I did not see or hear the inauguration, so I cannot comment on it.

But I was wondering what the Aretha Hat thread was about. Am I to understand that Aretha Franklin wore some sort of hat that caused a bit of comments?

Did the Beatles really play live on the Ed Sullivan Show, or was it taped and they lipped the words?

Maybe my nephew, once he graduates from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego this week, can apply to get into the Marine Corps Band. At least it will keep him out of harm’s way.
