For me,

#1) I quit my corporate job on 12/12/91 and have been working at home ever since.
#2) 8 years roaming around overseas.

hey there... say... this is easy for me: i tell jesus i love him every night and i thank him so very much that he keeps helping me whenever i feel i might do something stupid again...

i really DO need his help, and god is so good...

course, that doesn't mean, i got it all perfect now, but it means i'm keeping a right-good eye on things, and trying to steer and adjust my compass point to stay correct as possible, and at least, i'm being smarter than before i knew to thank god for his loving care upon me...

hey there ... on more of a list that is easy for you all to understand...

smart thing i have done:

taught my grandkids that they have someone that loves them, so that they will have an extra stableness in their life...

enjoyed my kids and family, when i could, as now, they are too far away, and i can't, but--it makes one have no regrets, that one tried hard...

Married this woman.....

Had children....

Bought my own home, went to college, quit smoking cigarettes, never started drinking alcohol, had parents that encouraged me to take chances and gave me the confidence and conviction to seek out my dreams and desires, chose to live in a healthy beautiful place, and have been smart enough to stay alive for 37 years of rock climbing.....

Sold a big house in 2005 and bought smaller.

Smarter still would have been to rent.

Got out of the financial commitment w/ the ex and the huge house we owned (4000 sq ft $2500 a month)and built a 400 sq ft cabin in the woods on my cousins property. Rent you ask? All the firewood I can supply him. Seeing how I am a tree climber, thats not a problem.

Started climbing. At 41 years old...better late than never.

Adopted Teddy. Even though I went in thinking pound hounds were $35 and he had a mega markup($150), for being a puppy and SO CUTE!

"Realized that I'm pretty much a happy idiot and accepted that fact."

I need to accept that, too!

Also,

actually condescending, from my lofty eyrie as college sophmore to climb with that Obnoxious, snot nosed, barely out of High school kid, Mike Friedrichs. "We're the locals." - gimee a break, I thought,

What an amazing, Mature, fully faceted human being he grew to be thirty years later! Any of you who know him will concur. We've had an amazing friendship, on and off the rocks, through times sometimes too rocky to talk about here.

Little sh#t still climbs like a demon, too!

Thanks, Fred!

Not much, but the stretching thing, yeah - that.

The most important thing I have ever done is not an action

it was a decision

to always find the nectar of joy in my life.

*Figured out that we all can be idiots. That is why I don't bother to hide my stupidity and I don't think less of anyone for doing the occasional stupid.
*Refused to allow a good samaritan to move a guy with a broken neck.
*I took my doctor's advice.
*Somehow managed to take a few fun trips, this included the one to Ouray with an ice climbing ST dude. Plus my trip with the beautiful Lynne! Oh, and I can't forget about seeing my grandmother again!
*Being lucky enough to have the honor of climbing with Cosmic! I had so much fun that it still makes me smile!

(Oh... And I miss L!)

Pretty much what Todd said (although the wife, who was my former climbing partner, pretty much put the brakes on most of my climbing). That and leaving the corporate world to work for myself, which keeps me just as busy but far happier.

Became a Commodity Broker in the mid seventies, learned to trade both bull and bear markets. Most importantly, learned to "sell short", and used that methodology to my best trading year ever the past 12 months by selling short the Dow, S&P, and Nasdaq.
PS, stay short, we are going much lower.

Only two I can think of:

- Stayed in rehab back in '88 instead of fleeing like I really wanted to. 20+ years later -- still sober. I thank God for every day.

- After 36 years of stubborn bachelorhood I got married and eventually relented about the whole "kids" thing. I had no idea what I was missing.
