I have said often that Kyle was the greatest desert climber of them all. He would onsight 5.12 on FAs, and his boldness on aid was legendary.
I last saw Kyle on his 50th birthday a half year ago. The Crohn's disease that has been attacking him for decades has reduced him to a shadow.
It didn't surprise me that he failed to respond to my messages. He has become very withdrawn.
I just got word that his incremental amputations (he had lost 3 toes when I saw him) have become much worse.
He has now lost the whole leg.
He is in SLC at Avalon Rehab.
The good news is that after being on a feeding tube for a while he gained 20 lbs despite the loss of his leg.
Also, he now has a very high quality wheelchair.
Perhaps some of his friends and old acquaintances will look in on him.
HINT: don't say "How are you doing?" He hates that. Just wish him well and ask him if he wants anything (likely not), and keep it short.
Anybody have some photos of him?

That is sobering and heartbreaking, Ron. I've never met Klyle, but is he well enough to post up among us here(?), as I know he would be welcome.

I'm really sad to hear this. His disease has caused him suffering as long as I have known him, but he was always upbeat regardless. The last time I saw him, perhaps 10 years ago, he was in good shape. This news is hard to hear.
Kyle's climbs are legendary, but he's been a great gear designer as well, helping a lot of companies get started, including the A5 Software division. His pack designs were especially stellar.
Sadly, I have no photos of Kyle. We climbed the Fang in Zion together, but must not have had a camera.
I wish him well.

Really sad to hear that Kyle is suffering, and choosing to be alone at a time when he could really use the support of his friends.
He once lent Mike O Donnell and I some cams for an ascent of Primrose Dihedrals (over 14 years ago) that made the climb so much easier.
I remember that he treasured his collection of Grateful Dead bootlegs. Time to repay his kindness with some cd's for Christmas. Maybe others here who were lucky enough to brush shoulders with him can do likewise.

Ron,
Sorry to hear about your friend. I only know Kyle's name from guidebooks, etc., but the routes are legendary. I think your post answered a question of mine regarding the name of the Crohn's Wall outside of Moab. Anyhow: Having had a pretty severe case of Crohn's Colitis myself for the last 26 years (multiple colon amputations, etc.) I can sympathize. There may be hope, however in the form of a biological agent called Remicade (aka Infliximab, aka Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha). It has me in complete remission for the first time ever and I have been able to get off of all other immunosuppressants. The drug maker (Centocor) may have a program if insurance is an issue. Just thought that I would lob this one out there

Yeah, Kyle was a great guy to have in Boulder when he was living there 20+ years ago. If I remember correctly, he was the designer and force behind the first useable "hand jammies" crack climbing gloves, but I think he told me that he lost the original design specs and was never able to re-create the original product.

I don't think I've ever met Mr Copeland, but I've climbed with a bunch of his Droogs, and any of us who've spent more than a certain amount of time climbing or existing on the Colorado plateau know of him, and owe something to him for various routes and making the whole thing happen.
Thank you, and all the best vibes to you, Kyle!

Have not seen Kyle for several years. He was very kind when Bill Myers, his wife (girlfriend at that time) and myself were trying to climb Standing Rock in the late 1980s; we crashed at his place, set off, returned after being arrested (for climbing without a permit, BITD) and thrown out of the Park, crashed again at his place after arriving at some crazy hour, got up horribly early for the return bout. He was happy to see us, patient with our crazy schedule, and regaled us with great stories. Though even then, he was getting more into playing his guitar and working on his beautiful stonework projects than climbing.
This slide is from Eric Bjornstad's collection. I don't know who took it. Kyle Copeland, Eric somebody(?), Warren (unmistakable!) and Eric.

Maybe 16 years ago, as I was taking a break from Boulder and a failed relationship, I went to Moab on a solo mountain biking trip, tossing my harness and a bit of gear in the van "just in case". As I was wrapping up the Slickrock trail, some folks I met on the ride invited me to a climbing slideshow over at Kyle's place. I had never met him before, but got to chatting, mentioning that I would love to get a bit of climbing in if possible. It turned out that he and his friend Daryl (who since moved up to AK to be climbing ranger in Talkeetna) had scoped out a first ascent line on Chimney Rock in Dead Horse Point SP, and were planning to head out early the next morning. So, without really knowing me at all, Kyle invited me along on what turned out to be one of the most memorable climbing experiences of my life... I've lost touch with him over the years but have always felt incredibly thankful to be part of that experience.

He told me about that one bfb, give me an email shout.
Fact is; the Dead Horse Point that "Dream of Dead Horses" is on is not the REAL dead horse point. The real point where the horses died was the point with Chimney Rock.
They moved the state park one "point" over, and built a replica mock up fence because the view was marred by both Chimney Rock and the potash evaporation ponds.

I really appreciate these kinds of threads, where people pay tribute rather than contend. We are all, in a sense, one big family, but petty rivalries and immaturities tear us apart at times. When it comes down to it, though, and life hangs in the balance, we draw again the right perspective and realize how important we are/or should be to one another. I think I met Kyle in Boulder, but we didn't know each other well. I think it was Charlie Fowler who helped me become acquainted with Kyle. The name became one of those mysterious names that evoked respect.

I am so sad;...Kyle was my bro, my hero, and my mentor for desert climbing. He's one of the most awesome climbers and human beings I know, and have ever met. Kyle was one of the first climbers to move to Moab, Utah, just to climb, live, and live the life. Those who know Kyle are way richer from having him as a friend. Here is Kyle on the excellent Class Act (5.11 power lieback) north of town.

Kyle wanted to take up out to a new climb he had done up Kane Springs, and he wanted to share with us;.....At Kyle's house, he grabbed his pack, threw in some climbing gear and then tossed his lunch on top of the gear;.....some chocolate donuts (unwrapped and not in a package) and a pack of camel non-filters.....(this cracked me up...)....He lead us up the steep walled swampy canyon, and took us to this crack;....it was awesome, and a beautiful perfect day. The Kind 5.10 (another Copeland masterpiece).

Every spring break, I would drive from Joshua Tree to Moab;...the first place I stopped off at was Kyle's house, as soon as we got to town. Kyle sort of liked some peace and quiet, but there were always people at his house;...it was the center of the sandstone universe. Climbers, local Moab kooks, musicians,.....sometimes he was a grouch from all the madness and visitors;.....but he was always happy to see me and my friends each year, and way accomodating;....I must have taken 100 or more showers at his house over the years;....always made a mess of the bathroom....borrowed gear and beta from him;...but always took him out to dinner and breakfast, a pack of smokes, and a card at Xmas;...sometimes a phone call to warn him we were coming (and we had large mob groups some spring breaks....)....but after 20 some years of invading his house for a week each year, he came to expect it....The climbs we did together over the years were always a gas...magic moments in the most awesome places on earth........Everything he did , he was the best at;......Dinosaur bone collector, musician, climber, search and rescue expert, mechanic, designer, friend....

Kyle on The Bride, Gemini Bridges area.
When Warren Harding moved to Moab, he really wasn't into climbing anymore. Kyle became friends with Warren, and they had lots of adventures together;.....Kyle got Warren to rope up now and again for a few climbs too. Warren gave Kyle most of his gear....Kyle had Warren's bat tent from the WAll of the Early Morning Light hanging on his livingroom wall....signed by Warren. He also had 3 boxes of Warren's pitons;..many of them homemade ones;....Kyle gave me a bunch of those pins, and I used them on many desert towers. During our spring break visits, for a couple of years in a row, we would get together with Kyle at Warren's house for BBQ, ice cream, and slideshows.....Warren got all drunk ( imagine that!) and invited Cyndie Bransford to join him in climbing again the Wall of the Early Morning Light!.....and Warren's slides and narration were way funny;....for Warren couldn't remember what many of the slides were.....nor did he care....but he always had something funny to say about each slide........Kyle was a good friend for Warren to have, because Kyle was always doing stuff, motivated, safe, smart, witty, and creative......Warren was game, but pretty comfortable hanging at home at watching the tube;....Kyle got him out alot and they had some great adventures together.....

Kyle did the FA of most of the Potash routes;.....he did them just for kicks and fun, and never thought they would become anything but a novelty and sideshow for the handfull of local knuckleheads who lived and climbed around Moab;...when they became popular and a scene, he never climbed there again, and wouldn't even talk about the place;...he was over it. We climbed together a few times, and were the only ones there....way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth....(Check out his "Snuggles" chalkbag...)

Cyndie Bransford, myself, Margie Evans, Dave Evans, and Kyle, sorting gear in Moab.
I first met Kyle through Eric Bjornstad;......I met Eric through Lin Ottenger at the famous tourist place The Rock Shop in Moab;...as Eric was living there in a trailer, I believe. Eric said he had someone I needed to meet, and he took me over to Kyle's house. Kyle was already an awesome very well accomplished climber, with many ascents in Colorado, Yosemite, and other places;....El Cap, the Diamond, Eldo, etc....and was just starting to get into desert towere......we were both WAY into climbing desert towers, and in the early 80's....there were only a few of us........we instantly became great friends.....
Once a horse got loose in Moab, and was running around downtown, and the police and fire department couldn't catch it;...they call Kyle;.....he was wiley, focused, determined, and loved challenges like that, and the whole town knew it;....if anyone could catch the horse;..it was Kyle.....sure enough, he chased the horse down, tied it up and once again , saved the day.....

Ron & Todd, thanks for this post and the stories & photos in it. I've heard many an amazing story about Kyle from all the time I spent out in the Moab area (his genius and exploits way before I found climbing). His name is attached to so many FA's in my desert rock guidebooks.
The first 2 climbs I did in Moab were his. Potash Rd as a total noob. Nervous in Suburbia and 30 Seconds Over Potash. I think for a lot of new climbers arriving in Moab, those are the first tastes of the place. And we're all thankful for Kyle.
Sending out positive thoughts to Kyle. His legacy in Moab climbing is so proud and greatly appreciated. His vision lives on for so many climbers to come.

He really was an excellent host there in MOAB.
In the early 90s several of us went out to the desert to get up some towers.
Nancy was a friend of Kyle’s so she said we should stop in and see him and added that this visit was a requirement of any desert trip.
One afternoon after we got back from Castleton; Kyle gave us an excellent tour of the good routes at Potash Road and that night we watched a slideshow projected up on the building next to where he lived. Warren Harding was there regaling us with tales of pitons, wine, women and sports cars.
These were good times.

Yes in fact, if you look at that picture just above,
Kyle's fingers are on the slide projector remote advance trigger.
That particular night was a terrific party. Earlier that afternoon, Kyle and I had just met, so I was stoked for him to give me a little tour of all the different sewing machines he had in the house. (I have been known to wield a needle and thread in my time as well).
The next day we climbed North Six Shooter.
This was July mind you, so we waited for the tower to get into the shade and I distinctly remember swetting a little bit of tequila on that approach...
When we got back, an old friend of Boulder, Patty Fay, was at Kyle's house hanging out with him. She wasn't even a climber; just another one of the many people Kyle knows. The place was a nexus.
This is really the only time I met Kyle.
A year or two later, when a buddy and I topped out on Fine Jade, Kyle was hanging out on top of the Rectory doing rigging for some sort of film shoot.

i google kyle's name every few months to see how he's doing, and this latest news is saddening. in march of 1981 i was a recent transplant from the midwest hanging out in eldorado canyon with a couple friends and a bottle of yukon jack. kyle came over, introduced himself and we became fast friends. he introduced me to rock climbing so he'd have someone to tag along with him, and one of the most incredible days of my life was climbing the first flatiron with him and rappelling off the top, all while wearing hiking boots and a homemade harness made from webbing.
he started a company called 'small axe tree service' and i was his sole employee. we had a blast listening to reggae and climbing around in trees all day, then bouldering after work. to this day and without a doubt, kyle is one of the most talented, intelligent and certainly the most unique individual i've ever met in my life.
after i moved to the mountains kyle stopped by a couple times to crash for the night. once he stopped by about midnight excitedly talking about some first ascent he and his friend did in the park. i was too tired to listen and went back to bed, not understanding until a couple years ago what he had done, and who he was with. am i correct thinking it was charlie fowler who slept on my front room floor that night?
i've swung by kyle's place a few times during the past couple years, but he was never around.the last time i saw him was in 1993 and i still have this picture in my mind of him passing me on a mountain bike with a camel straight in his mouth. this was after his first bout with crohn's, and i remember him showing me a giant scar on his belly from what must've been his first surgery. he thought he got sick from drinking from black lakes on vail pass after a long day of climbing. not sure if that was ever determined to be the cause or not.
i have several pictures of a 22 year old kyle copeland that i'll dig out to post on this forum. maybe someone could pass them along to kyle and give him a 'hello' from tom @ small axe tree service.
thanks, and good luck kyle.

hey there piton ron... say, i just saw this... .i was just thinking if you all could share these post with kyle and let him see how WONDERFUL his stories to be shared would be...
also, just that fact that he is a special friend and beloved person, might be enough to get him online to visit...
that's what life is for, if you dont get out---you share what your inner man, is by word-of-mouth... telephone... radio waves, or now... the ol' internet....
SAY, RON---i remember OUCH! and how he shared out of his pain... perhaps you can share some of that and what OUCH! did...
say, kyle, you dont know me... (my brother chappy, mark chapman used to climb in yosemite) but say, even folks like ME, that are here, due to the fact that we love a family memeber and their life-work, etc, and the work that others do on the rock, just goes to show:
folks here really DO love you... and really DO enjoy shareing what you and others have done...
say, this can be ONE of your finest hours----shareing yourself with a whole world of folks...
some may even need a helping hand, and YOU just may have it!...
say, this is a whole new ROCK TO CLIMB, throw up a rope, and take the challenge....
:)
*(oh my... ain't i a sassy ol' gal, now... )
say, come on in... the challenge will do make you sparkle...

When we saw each other last Kyle asked me to take charge of the Hall Of Flame, one of the most outstanding antique hardware collections extant.
We will then inventory and label each item.

He's been moved to a facility in Provo.
I've tried calling him there a dozen times (last time yesterday) but he's been keeping his phone turned off.
There has been no discussion of photos.

Cheers John.
