I have the Indices for Mountain from 89 through 136, the last was 145...

Since I've completed my initial project for the winter (going through the AAJ for Yosemite references) I thought I might scan these Indices and run them through OCR and provide them in a useful format appropriate for the web.

Does anyone know if there were indices prior to #89? Cynthia Grindley compiled them... Does anyone have these indices and if so would you be willing to make a copy and send them to me? (or scan them and send the .pdf files??)...

I can index 137 through 145... my first was 90 and I have a complete set of 95 though 145.

I have all issues except for 12 of 'em. I start at #4 with a few skips at the beginning and the end. (Way before my time and then I got lazy.)

However, I never had an index. Never saw one. What did you have in mind?

I have the following indexes for Mountain (by issue numbers): 13 - 24, 25 - 40, 41 - 52, 53 - 64, 65 - 76, 77 - 88, 89 - 100, 101 - 112, 113 - 124, 125 - 136. They did about 12 issues at a time, and the quality gradually got better. I don't know if there was an index to issues 1 - 12.

You had to order them from time to time, and I think if you were a subscriber you got sent some. I vaguely recall that they didn't start indexing until the late 1970s or later, and then had to work through a backlog.

They're fairly small print, about 7 or 8 point, and on odd-sized paper, by North American standards. So it might not scan well, or post readably. Let me know, my people can talk with your people, we can do lunch, maybe figure something out. Or I could give you copies when you're here in January - probably 80 to 100 pages total.

Ed, as I remember there were indexes for all. I had the complete collection. I donated them all to the Marriott Library at the Univ. of Utah. I have no idea if the collection is on line - probably not even catalogued.

Sounds like a worthy project, Ed!

I have all the index, from #1 to #145 (well, I am at work, and maybe - as Anders - I do not have 1-12 (I'll check tonight)).

Being European, I find they have the right format, and it could be nice to see if they read well in OCR. But as said: Small typing & colums could prove as good deal of hand-work...

Okay, where were the indices? Did they publish them? Don't recall seeing anything separate. Gimme a hint and I'll check to see what I have.

the indices were mailed about every 12 issues with the magazine subscription. They were separate, sometimes very large sheets (folded to an A4 size?) which came in the envelope containing the magazine.

I'll get a front page up at some point, and test out the OCR on the home scanner here...

found this little bit in Montain 128 pages 7/8:

'Rush "the Fish" Walling established a route right of Tumbling Rainbow - Tonic Boom (5.12). Tic Toc Boom (5.12a, FA: Roy McClenahan) is right of Tonic Boom and start from Rainy Day Dream Away. Both of the Boom routes are on good quality, steep rock.'

Rush Walling is the index entry...

I'm lucky enough to have every issue of Mountain, except #1 - #12, that is #13 - #145. And the indexes for #13 - #136, which I've just copied and sent to Ed so that he can scan them, and use OCR to convert them into something computer-friendly.

Did Mountain simply go out of business, or was there more of a story to it than that?

If it had kept publishing six issues/year, Mountain would now be up to #263 or so.

It was and is the only English-language climbing 'magazine' to have an index.

Dhaulagiri is a great mountain. I've had the luck of circumventing it twice, one time in very nice weather and one in horrendous. My scanned slides are lousy - will do better during the next week and upload.

For more than 20 years I have had a "Mountain Magazine Mystery": My issue #113 has been missing from my 25-145 continious collection. Well, I counted it lost, got a photocopy from a friend, and lived happy.

Until today!

I have - as mentioned previously - borrowed a Nikon scanner, and is eating my way through 6000+ slides. I have come to a casette with portraits of different climbers I've met. Here is one of Dough Scott, worldfameous British climber. He visited Copenhagen in 1987 and stayed at my place.

Look what he is reading (together with my climbing buddies, Tobias, Magnus and Søren)!

We were talking about climbing in Norway (the very good book Norsk Fjellsport is visible as well), and M #113 has a long article about Norway.

Well, I have asked my friends (and I still see and climb with them all); they don't have my Mountain Mag.

So, dear agony aunt,
What should do?

Should I call him, and ask?
Go to Lake District / Cumbria, force my way into his house and look through his files?
Let the case rest?

Hm, I think I'll let it rest. But interesting still...

3 1969 May
4 1969 July
6 1969 November
7 1970 January
8 1970 March
9 1970 May

12 1970 November
13 1971 January
14 1971 March
15 1971 May
18 1971 November
19 1972 January
21 1972 May
24 1972 November
25 1973 January
26 1973 March
29 1973 September
34 1974 April
35 1974 May
39 1974 October
40 1974 November
41 1975 January
42 1975 March/April
43 1975 May/June
44 1975 July/August
45 1975 September/October
46 1975 November/December

I'd like to have all answers, believe me.

Going through the magazines I was happy to see that you have missing pieces mainly before 1975, because that was when the folks at Mountain decided to take the date off the cover and hide it inside the magazine (Issue #42 was the first), meaning taking off each magazine, going through it, taking the proverbial stroll down memory lane and reading a few passages as opposed to just glancing at the cover. Nevertheless, a mere glance at the iconic images portrayed there sufficed most of the time to persuade me into going through the magazine anyway.
(At least I noticed that I had my #38 and #39 mixed up. The HORROR!)

Ed, your little hobbies of indexing, collecting, filing etc. are great contributions to the climbing community. (As are Wide Wednesday TRs.)

Cheers!

Lasti

I have all the original Mountain index series through Mountain 136.
I am going to forward copies to Steve Grossman. I can forward copies to you.
I have all of Mountain magazine except 1, which I have a low quality copy.
Plus I have many duplicate copies. I will take a look at your want list later. My e-mail is jim@bjwhite.net. Let me know where to send a copy of index 1-12.

Aloha Ed,

I VERY MUCH appreciate the work you are doing on behalf of the climbing community, generally, and specifically on the Mountain Index Project. Since I was one of the editors for Mountain 4, the Yosemite Issue, I have an extra copy that I'd be honored if you would accept. I'd also inscribe my appreciation for your work and for your generally generous attitude here on the Taco Stand. If you already have acquired Mountain 4, I suggest that we (someone!) get a ton of signatures on my copy at the up-coming Nose Reunion and offer it to Y.C.A. for their next silent auction fund-raiser. And if some generous person (like Fattrad) wins the auction and can use the tax-deduction, he or she could then donate that copy to Y.C.A., perhaps to be auctioned again. Imagine sustainable financial support...

Ultimately, I'd like to collections such as yours and mine preserved in such a way that people can also appreciate the history that they represent. And you are doing just that. What goes around, comes around.

If other readers have ideas about preserving our collective climbing heritage, please feel free to share them here or on the other thread where ideas are being gathered:

'Ano 'Ai BooDawg - thanks for the offer! I don't have Mountain 4 but your idea sounds great, of getting signatures, we've been through this with Marty(r)'s project (http://yosemiteclimber.blogspot.com/); with Yosemite Climber so he and Roger Breedlove would have some ideas about the auction, and raising money, etc...

I have a plan for the Mountain collection, we'll see how hard it is and how long it takes, but collecting is one thing, figuring out how to share the collection is an important part of the puzzle for me...

...so I'd love to have your copy for my collection, but I would like it even more if it did some good supporting a grand cause like Ken's YCA, or some other important climber institution...

Aloha Ed,

Since I cannot attend the Nose 2nd Ascent Reunion, I'll send you the copy of Mountain #4 if you PM me your snail mail address. In the meantime, I'll PM Roger and Ken Y. about this plan and get their input on it.

Will you be going to the Reunion? Could you be the one to solicit signatures on the Mountain 4?

Looking forward...

Oh the last pitch of I Can't believe It's a Girdle.
How funny I wonder who reported it. Certainly not me.
I never reported anything. Still it is good to clear that up.
Thank you Doc Touni for the hard work on the Mountain Index.

Thank you very very much for these indexes! I've had issues from 42 till the end for five years now. Finally I can use them to full potential!

Would you mind if I publish them on my site www.patagonia.fi? I'd like to share these as wide as possible if it's ok for you.

adnix please feel free to use them, I believe that they are the work of a number of people and I'd like to keep the information as much in the public domain as possible...

Indexing is grueling work for me, and I've failed to make as much progress indexing from issue 136 to the end... but it is still a project I'm grinding through, so hopefully we'll have that too.

Please note that there are errors that are introduced in the process of scanning and recognizing text, as well as the original errors in both the indices and in Mountain (notorious misspellings of names most often).

I am working on combining all of the indices into a single index that spans the entire collection... stay tuned.

But by all means make use of the current indices... the relevance of Mountain is greater as time passes, not less.
