Ive been climbing a long long time. One I met in the early 80's was as arrogant as they come, but hes dead. So in respect for him, will not post his name. Whos your vote for most arrogant? Off topic? Not really, this is a climbing thread.

Arrogant ? Climber? Well to my recollection never met a really great climber that was arrogant. Some wannabes maybe. Most are pretty darn ok. :D Peace, Lynne

All depths of depravity and vanity should be fully explored on this public forum!

Why isn't every other thread about the defamation of the climbing community? I know some people with really stinky feet! I feel a slam coming on...

You people are so bias towards the positive! Sheesh!

Wazzup with that?

Mr E "All depths of depravity and vanity should be fully explored on this public forum!"

We already know "depravity and vanity" exist to the max, and we already know they lead to the dead end.

But the positive side only leads to the endless unlimited.

I was reminded recently that some of the people I had been talking about are older and wiser(we hope), and would probably be the first to admit of their past arrogance. Youth tends to aspire to arrogance.

Arrogant....Merriam-Webster's definition ....exaggerating or disposed to exaggerate one's own worth or importance often by an overbearing manner.

Nah, if you did that the Slander Masters would crucify ya. Then life becomes unbearable.

AND IF OUCH (or Cozmic, or someone) was with us we would now see #46 "overbearing" a climber. Lynnie

Karl? Arrogant? The dude's mission statement is humility, but I hear he pulls hard for a peacenik.

The first person that comes to mind here is my good buddy Weschrist. It may be because of his 'youthful exhuberance' but sometimes he usually comes off as arrogant.

"wait..you said climber. karl baba then."

Funny thing is that it's true! I'm arrogant in an understated way. I'm so confident in myself that I don't have to put others down to feel good, don't have to climb well to feel good, and don't have to convince others I'm worth a sh#t to feel good.

I'm confident enough to accept my lack of confidence, particularly when it's well deserved.

I'm cocky enough to think this kind of arrogance is a sort of maturity. The arrogance you have to watch out for is "Chihuahua" arrogance where doubt and fear breed aggression.

Yosemite has seen a few real bad asses who manage to project serious arrogance. That's a good thing so we know heros aren't perfect humans

Peace

Bill Denz and I discussed ego and climbing while we were doing the NA Wall in 78. We both decided that since the climbing seemed more like hard work than fun, it was our egos that put us up there. Anyway, what I have found is that many of us were somewhat arrogant in our youth but as we grew older it just kinda faded away. In terms of the least arrogant great climbers I have known it would be Croft and Bill Price.

I'm still striving to acquire you're level of enlightenment, Wes, but people like me need time. Don't look down upon us, Wes, pity us.

C'mon, you gotta admit you're a cocky f*#ker! Some call if confidence, others see it as arrogance. In the end, it doesn't matter, it's what you do and in that regard you seem to be pretty o.k....seemingly.

Sometimes arrogance is a tool to get you through the impossible. If you are busy thinking that nothing can stop you, than you won't waste time on seeing all the ways you can get hurt. Instead, you will focus on the path that "will" work.
---

Now for the most arrogant climber I know... The one that takes the cake is so lost that he is not worth naming.

People like him live hard lives despite feeling "special" and self righteous. Because of their sense of righteousness, self worth, entitlement; they always feel cheated out of what they deserved. Because they are so focused on themselves, they lack empathy and have no close relationships with others. Nothing of value sticks since their own self worth will push it away.

Luckily he is a loner, so he's pretty harmless and... He is very fun to watch.

How could anyone who has ever met Ivo describe him as arrogant? Makes no sense.

It's been my experience that the really bad ass climbers - people like Jim Bridwell and the Hubers - are far and away the least arrogant. They have nothing to prove, and are super nice guys.

Maybe I didn’t notice because I was just as arrogant but not as good at the time. It doesn't matter now.

What does matter is we are still climbing and not just living in the memories.

Those persons that are globally, inextricably arrogant *regardless of activity* stand out, in this unfortunate list.

I have met some persons --that happen to be climbers, good ones-- that fit this description quite well. You know many of their names.
