A loud gunshot behind our house woke us up Saturday morning. Jack barked
and growled, as he should. But hearing nothing further, we fell back asleep.

A bit later, I went into the woods with Jack. "What do you suppose happened?"
I asked him.

"I think I know! Follow me," he answered. So I followed him as he followed
his nose, and we soon found a steaming heap of deer guts. About a hundred
feet from a NO HUNTING sign.

"It's not the crime of the century," I said apologetically, when I phoned Fish
and Game. To my surprise two helpful officers showed up, explored the scene
carefully, and came up with a scenario and some deductions about the perp.

Meanwhile, I'd gone on to my own work, cutting down an apple tree that had
become a nuisance, and sawing it into wood for next winter. A beech, a white
pine and a phone line all told me they were glad to see the apple tree go.

After dark, Leslie and I went to a post-election dinner party hosted by the
state director of Veterans for Obama. Eventually there was singing of that
Woody Guthrie tune.

On Sunday, I put on my approach shoes and climbed up on the roof to ream
creosote out of our chimney. This ought to be a yearly ritual but I hadn't
done it in four; in truth, the roof work is a little bit scary. The job involves
dismantling messy stovepipes as well.

As I was washing up at day's end, Jack became violently ill.

"You went back out in the woods, didn't you?" I asked him, with sympathy
because he looked so pathetic.

"I know I shouldn't, but it's my nature," he sighed.

Felt no urge to take any. It's fine with me if the next time Jack and I walk out
there, the crows and the foxes or coyotes have made all those guts go away.

Believe it or not, the humble story that I started this thread with now has a sequel
written by others. The sequel is more dramatic than my original story, and has been
picked up by dozens of news outlets around the country, and at least as far away
as Britain.

Hunter nabbed by card in deer belly
By Elizabeth Dinan
edinan@seacoastonline.com
December 05, 2008 6:00 AM

PORTSMOUTH University of New Hampshire public works supervisor David Howard
shot and killed a deer on posted property in Lee, hauled it away from a UNH
gravel pit, lied about the kill on a registration form in Greenland, then
moved the deer's "gut pile" to Stratham in an attempt to avoid prosecution,
according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

A business card placed in the belly of the gut pile by Fish and Game Officer
William Boudreau unraveled the scheme, leading to Howard's arrest on a Class B
misdemeanor count of making a false report to the state Fish and Game
Department, according to court records. That charge will be prosecuted in
Portsmouth District Court, while violation-level charges of trespassing and
improper tagging will be heard in Durham District Court, according to
Conservation Officer Lt. John Wimsatt.

An investigation began Nov. 8 when a Lee property owner reported hearing a gun
shot at 7 a.m., then later finding "gut pile remains" of a deer in the Maud
Jones Memorial Forest, according to an affidavit by Boudreau. From the gut
pile, the Fish and Game officer found drag marks leading to a locked UNH-owned
gravel pit that is surrounded by the Maud Jones Forest, Boudreau reported.

An udder and reproductive organs in the gut pile led to the determination that
the remains came from a female whitetail deer, said Boudreau, while the drag
marks showed the gutted animal had been placed into a vehicle in the
university-owned gravel pit.

Noting hunters are required to register kills within 24 hours at the closest
open registration station, Boudreau's investigation took him to stations in
the Lee area, where he found no female whitetail deer registered, he said.

According to court documents, Boudreau and Wimsatt later met Howard at a UNH
facilities building, where Howard reported having a key to the gravel pit gate
and that he'd killed two deer that fall, one in Durham and another in
Greenland. A registration form filed and signed by Howard at Greenland's Suds
N Soda on Nov. 8 stated he killed a deer in that town, but when asked later by
Boudreau where he shot the deer, Howard was unable to find the location on a
map, Boudreau reported.

On Nov. 12, Boudreau called Howard and arranged a meeting at the "kill site,"
which Howard then said was in Newfields. After the meeting was scheduled,
Boudreau went back to the Lee forest, found the gut pile and put his business
card with the date and time written on the back into the deer's stomach,
according to Fish and Game.

The following afternoon, Boudreau met Howard at the Newfields location where
he said he shot the deer, but Howard then reported it was a spot in Stratham.
The pair drove to that location, where the officer was led into some woods off
Chisholm Farm Road and Howard pointed to a gut pile he said he left after
killing the deer on Nov. 8, according to court records.

Boudreau then cut open the stomach and found the business card he placed there
when it was in the Lee forest on Nov. 12.

"At this time, Howard handed CO Boudreau a typed confession that he had typed
up that morning," according to court records. "Howard also admitted to hunting
on the posted property."

Wimsatt said Thursday that "the case had a lot of twists," but it is not
uncommon for a hunter under investigation to create "a mock kill site." The
conservation officer described the plan to place the business card in the deer
belly was "taking a chance on the off-chance" that Howard would move it.

Howard is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 8 in Portsmouth District Court.

UNH spokewoman Erika Mantz declined to say whether the charges would affect
Howard's employment, noting "personnel records are confidential."

Cool. I'm sure the law enforcement folks on the forum can attest to this, but it's amazing how often a citizen reporting what seems to be an insignificant event turns out to be a key clue.

If something seems out of the ordinary, it probably is. If you are not sure if it is worth reporting, do it anyway. You never know.

After Thursday night's ice storm, 390,000 households in New Hampshire had no
power today. We're one of 'em. Things are kind of a mess, with power lines
all over our road.

On the bright side, we've got plenty of firewood, and we moved the refrigerator's contents
outdoors. No chance of things thawing out there. It was silvery today in the sun.

Philo, I heard today there are still 400,000 people in the Northeast without power.
Also heard that we might not get ours back until Saturday -- that'd be 9 days without.
Also without water, telephone or cell service.

There's electricity at my office, where I'm writing this, but we've gone into pioneer
mode at home. Been there before, but still ....

Museum, I like the look of your snowscapes.

They remind me of an argument on rec.climbing some years back. It was "skis vs. snowshoes,"
with at least one person suggesting that skilled skiers could travel almost anywhere a
snowshoer could, while having more fun. Some snowshoers begged to differ, claiming that
northeastern trails in particular are often not skier-friendly.

As someone who enjoys both modes of travel and isn't terribly good at either, I'm curious how
you'd evaluate skis vs. snowshoes for the kind of terrain you're cruising above.

Chiloe, we quit skiing largely because skis are only more of a hassle. Snow shoeing is our good excuse to get out into the woods in full winter. Lately the snow has been good for that!

You're right too - around here some of trails are not skier friendly. When the skiing is good, the good/fun trails are packed with people.

Oh, and we suck at skiing anyway.

About 10 or 15 thousand years ago, the Laurentide ice sheet covering North America
met the Atlantic Ocean pretty much in our front yard.

As climate warmed, one chunk 50 meters or so wide calved off the retreating ice front
and got left behind, partly covered by sediments. Eventually it melted too, leaving
a roughly circular kettle hole about 10 meters deep.

There's no trail or sign, but we know where the kettle hole is. Today it made a
pleasant snowshoe destination, for a guy who's been sick indoors for two weeks.

It felt good to get out in the air.

I second the enthusiasm of seeing people getting out with their kids. My parents tell me about a long hike they took me on in Maine. We used to go up to Maine a lot when I was young. All six kids, station wagon towing a camper trailer (a 'Frolic') with a small sunfish sailboat on top of the trailer.

They were brave. Some of our other camping trips were far away from our home and into lesser traveled regions of Maine, Canada/Ontario or just for kicks we went to a bunned fuked place in West Virginia which seemed to top them all. It was 1973. My brother Phil was thirteen years old. He had a pint of Jack Daniels in the car. That fuker would just swig off it, trying to maintain and would get COMPLETELY BUSTED!!!!Instead of playing cutesy license plates game it would turn into a full on roadside ...pocket searching SHAKEDOWN.%@#%??? on the side of the interstate. After my Mom (insert instead of the cops) got all my brother's guds she could find we would go on our merry way. As fun as Chevy Chase is, our vacations were right there with the best. I am indebted to my parents for 'going for' it at least two solid weeks a year. That's all the could do and the did it. As kids it really gave us something to look forward to. Thank you Mom and Dad for doing my favorite thing in the whole world with me.

O.K. so they say what you sow your reap. When I moved to Wyoming as a youngster and a seasonal employee I would road trip to southern Utah by myself for a month at a time. I would naturally keep in touch with some people, my parents included. I remember my Mom being really inquisitive, if not a bit apprehensive. Where do you sleep, what do you do.... Well I got lucky and gave them back some of what they gave me; a love for the wilderness. When they said they wanted to visit me in Wyoming I suggested they rent a 4x4 car. Utahd or bust. We went to a lot of my very best super fun (very best) places set up to car camp. AND Hale Bop comet rose right around sunset every night we were out there. We spent 14 days road tripping with my parents in ultimate sp(god) GOD'S counrty . (If there is a GOD/god he's in those kinds of beautiful places)

shameless locker ripoff style

getting semi on topic: We had the time of our life. They say it's the best vacation they've ever had. Curiously, it is one of the best times I've had in my life. I have my flaws, but I can't blame them on my good parents who seemed to do everything for their children. My Dad is an amazing person. I truly have more fun hanging out with him than any of my friends. And my good friends whom have met him are always in agreement. He's the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's to parents taking their children (OOOOOOOUT tharrrr).

I feel like a Pirate tonight.

Getting out with the babies is wonderful. I remember one hike with number-one son when he was just a few months old, riding in the baby backpack with his mom and dad as they hiked around on top of one of the local mountains. Unfortunately, baby Michael had inherited his mother's high cheekbones, and had slept the whole time with his head floppoed over at just the right angle to present one of those cheekbones to the sun.

We were afraid to take him out in public for a week or so after that cuz it looked like we'd stubbed a cigarette out on his face. The shape of his face, the flopped over angle of his head, the direction of our walking had all combined to leave him with a very small burn in just that one spot.

And in the spirit of non-climbing weekend TRs, I should report that this weekend was devoted to a sausage fest. Yup. First time ever for making sausage. Pretty funny, and someone was taking pictures, so I'll try to get copies for posting.
