Given the history at Hampton and the anticipation of the band reuniting, I expect a big ol mess. I think they shoulda pulled a sneak attack, like the "Warlocks" at Hampton back in 89. Hoping for the best...

I can already smell/taste the garlic grilled cheese and "kind" veggie burritos cooked by cute hippie chick in her VW.

Hopefully I won't have my vehicle burn to the ground on the way to the show this time. (R.I.P. 63 VW 15 Window Deluxe Microbus) : (

Depending on the venue(s)it could be a fun ST/Phish head gathering paired with some climbing.

DJS,
Our rig burned up on the way to Red Rocks in '96! That's a funny story. Told hippe chick/friend to check her oil!

Word is Trey is all striaght now, after getting arrested, who knows.

I'm sure the scene there will be out of hand, but that's not what I go for.

I did my undergrad at UVM, so I was able to see 'em for free all the damn time. My sophomore year, Fishman used to hang out on my dorm floor a bit; he was friends with somebody down the hall. Anyway, he'd pedal up the hill on his clunky 10-speed with a backpack full of Milwaukee's Beast and regale us with zany tales of questionable veracity (road-tripping across the country in a stolen Wonder Bread truck, for example). My old banjo teacher played on a bunch of their earlier albums, so I got to hang out with them a little bit. Picking bluegrass backstage or just shootin the shiz, or even just bumping into one at the deli or whatever. Pretty early in their rise, but you could feel the momentum, and I remember a lot of earnest growing pains. Anyway, good dudes.

PS - Hadn't heard about the herion, but Burlington was awful close to Montreal, and there always seemed to be a lot of opiates around. Drag. I wish them all the best.

This song always had a climbing connection for me. They kind of lost me after this album.Oh, I have tasted Nectar fries, and they are good.

Rift
Last night, in the moments my thoughts were adrift
And coasting a terrace, approaching a rift
Through which I could spy several glimpses beneath
Of the darkness the light from above could not reach
I spied wings of reason, herself taking flight
And upon yonder precipice saw her alight
And glared back at me one last look of dismay
As if she were the last one she thought I'd betray

So much better I said to myself
And drawing quite close to the top of the shelf
I struggled with destiny upon the ledge
And gasped when defeated he slipped off the edge
And silence contagious in moments like these
Consumed me and strengthened my will to appease
The passion that sparked me one terrible night
And shocked and persuaded my soul to ignite

So much better I said to myself
And drawing quite close to the top of the shelf
I struggled with destiny upon the ledge
And gasped when defeated he slipped off the edge

And silence contagious in moments like these
Consume me and strengthen my will to appease

The passion that sparked me one terrible night
(And shocked and persuaded my soul to ignite) x5

Have any of you found that the longer, deeper jams lend themselves to electronic music? I toured for a while, saw maybe 50 shows, and always found myself liking the 2001 jam, or the long jam on Hood, etc, to be my main attraction.
Eventually, I stopped sewing and holding up an index finger, hitchiking and making grilled cheese(WTF, it's only a buck...), and ventured to other musical styles.
After a time, I found myself drawn to the SF electronica scene, namely Lorin, Freq, An-Ten-Nae, and Ana Sia. I realize this might not be common, but I find that the really deep, blue lights sort of jams are what influenced my taste for electronica.

Just a thought...

Brandon,
Have you seen the "IT" documentary? Or heard the "Tower Set" from IT?

The band talks about how IT was sort of a rebirth of their music wich culminated in the Tower Set. It's pretty out there with effects and distortion, loops, etc...and sounds very electronica-ish.

I think that is where they wanted to go with their music post hiatus in 2003 (well thats what they said anyway), but they kept falling back into the old Phish mold, partially to please the high expectations from the fans to play the big jam songs at shows.

I'm exited to see what they come out with in March, and I'm hoping it's a new Phish. If've seen enough Hoods and Antelopes, those would be fun once in a while, but I'd much rather hear them play new songs and explore new sounds.

Picture of Nectar and Rift will both forever remind me of hauling ass up to the Forks or the Pit in the early 90's. Phish's show in Prescott was a hoot! $3.50 I think! After the show I went up to Groom Creek for some moonlight lysergic antics and found a fishhook with line and lure on top of one of the tallest boulders. Cosmic!

Funny I see this thread today. I haven't listened to Phish much for years, but a show was playing on the XM at work today. I hadn't heard Harry Hood in years. Phish kick ass. I saw them about 15 times in the early to mid 90s, in the Carolinas. First show was at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte. Cool venue actually. Also saw them in their only show in Boone, NC. It was on that trip (no pun intended) that I decided to go to school there. Great band, true showmen (remember the trampolines and the vacuum). Today, when I was listening to Harry Hood, I realized one of the things I like about Phish is that they tell stories, beautiful stories, more with their instruments than with their words.

Waiting for the Lambone report...
it could take awhile, I'm sure he has the "post toasties"

Colonel Forbin stared up at the mountain
And wiped away the beads of sweat
That glistened on his brow
His tired feet were buried in the quagmire
And his bloodshot eyes saw all that lay between him
And fulfillment of his vow

And he felt his fingers wrap around a knotted root
And pulled his body upwards
To a sea green mossy boulder
And he dragged his weary sh#t-ass up the mountain

And he climbed so slowly
He climbed so slowly
Ahead
Ahead

Suddenly he heard the crack of thunder
And the rocks began to crumble overhead
And tumble down the mountain to the
Dismal swamp that lay beneath the jagged cliffs
through which his path had led
And the earth began to quake beneath his feet
And the mighty mountain changed before his eyes
And he stood amidst a sea of dust and rocks and stones
Cascading down the mountain
And a thousand birds were headed for the sky. Oh...

The sacred creed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
Obey

When the dust had cleared, the colonel lifted up his head
And was driven to his knees by a blazing beam of light
And he saw the silhouette that stood before him
And he bowed in reverence
Trembling in the shadow of the mighty legend's form
Icculus the prophet stood before his eyes
Looking down on Colonel Forbin
Where he shuddered in the puddles and the muck
And he quietly addressed him

And he spoke so slowly
He spoke so slowly
Ahead
He said

Colonel Forbin I know why you've come here
And I'll help you with your quest to gain the knowledge that you lack
I call upon my faithful friend the mockingbird
To fly and seize the helping book and bring it to your shack
And a tree of knowledge in your soul will grow
And the Helping Friendly Book will plant the seed
But I warn you that all knowledge seeming innocent and pure
Becomes a deadly weapon in the hands of avarice
And greed

The sacred greed will be yours
And if you wait until tomorrow
The sacred creed will be yours
To devour
Yours
To seize
And to obey
And to obey

And the famous mockingbird swooped down out of the sky and landed on Icculus's shoulder, and Icculus whispered into the bird's ear, and it flew off toward Wilson's castle in the valley below.

i always assume anyone who is not drunk or does not smell bad at a gig like that is probably a cop, that approach always served me pretty well.

from what i read there were like 200 arrests and 250 charges brought, mostly drug possession and a few w/ a bit more of problem, out of some 75K people. i don't see what all the hub-ub is about, that's next to nothing. there is also all sorts of stuff about phish paying the cops- well so what? i bet it was a part of the use permit, sounds kinda standard. i am pretty f-ing sure the band didn't request a bunch of federal narcs to come work their gig...

Any of you fans catch the big show in Presque Isle Maine at a closed Air Force Base about 5 years ago? Project Bandaloop was hired with about 24 hours notice to dance off the coning tower during the "secret" midnight set. I got the call in El Portal and said, yes I could drop everything and make the airport that afternoon. It was a fun gig, we got a bit of quality time with Trey who was genuinely interested in matching the tunes to the aerial quality of movement. And we got to hang out on stage for the sound check. The set went off well, and I think the fans dug the dance.

I had never listened to them much but really was impressed with how down to earth the band members and crew were, and how much they seemed to care for the audience experience. People often compare them to the Dead, who I saw about 15 times in the 70's-80's. The audience of 75,000 baseball cap wearing east coast college kids was very different from Winterland however.

Rock on!

Saw a whole bunch of shows from 93 until the hiatus, surely >100 including that ending run at Shoreline.

Some very strong memories stand out...93 Roxy run in Atlanta, Fall 95 run in Atlanta at the Fox where I ushered one show with backstage/dressing room access and got to eat with the band before the show, had 3rd row center sitting next to Dave Schools of WSP another night on that run, and front row balcony another night.

Halloween 96, again Atlanta with the Remain in Light album cover 2nd set and a SICK 2001.

Red Rocks run in 96 with a Purple Rain cover as an electrical storm raged in the background, and then running to the cars after the encore to catch MMW at the Bluebird in Denver.

Stopping in some college town in KS to see MMW between the Phish RR and Deer Creek shows, and meeting the band on a deserted street, then seeing the show in a freakin' tiny bar with like 200 people. Chris Wood steps out of the bus, "hey you guys know where I can get some food?" "Uh, no man, we just drove in from Denver to see the show, never been here before. Fun show at the Bluebird the other night, we'll see ya tonight"

Bob Weir as special guest on stage at Shoreline COMPLETELY out of his depth and looking like he'd aged 20yrs in the last 5, and Trey kind of sneering and almost laughing at him.

I have a crew of about 6 of us coming up from Yosemite for both Tahoe shows. Also have a room already rented across the street from Harvey's.

Maybe we should organize a meet up point for 'Taco heads just before the show, to introduce ourselves...

I am also planning on hitting the line early each morning for a Pollock print. Anyone else want to share line sitting duties?

I ran into Trey at a Neil Young show in NYC recently - we talked about the venue, a little about the band - he seemed genuinely psyched they were back out on the road.

Neil was pretty good - his Le Noise stuff was great, he's got an awesome sound going. But went solo electric it was a bit too far I'd say.

Worked up a loop cover of Sand, if anyone's interested:

Bags are packed, leaving tomorrow after work for Superball 9. I like the history aspect of Watkins Glen, the Dead have been there and played an unreal soundcheck.

Watched through the fence tonight.
First phish show in almost 10 years. The boys still got it that's for damn' sure.
I didn't feel like it was an outstanding show for me, a lot of not my favorite songs, but a few classics I certainly enjoyed. The YEM w/ vocal jam closer was wicked. Always enjoy a good Antelope too.

Listened a bit through the fence last night. Hadn't seen 'em since '94. College in the early 90s in Burlington meant I could see them playing in the bars all the time. Anyway, during set break last night one of my bands did a set in the Horizon parking lot:

Then we had to go sound check for our actual gig inside. Fun night.

the best jam ever is a tie: the last 6 minutes from the "a live one" tweezer or that f*#king SMOKIN' harry hood from "a live one". God Damn that reprise is epic

Headed to Watkins Glen this summer with some friends, I'm pretty sure Wilbeer is going to be there with us too. Anyone in the northeast want to camp out and see some music? Side trips to swimming holes, it's going to be a blast! Let's go, big groups are fun groups!

Just went grocery shopping with the crew last night, we leave tomorrow. It'll be my future wife's first Phish show, my 30ish, and I'm headed with friends that I've been seeing shows with for 20 years. Good times will abound, bring on Magnaball! Last show I saw was four years ago at Watkins Glen, time flies!

a good friend of mine
was relaying a story
recently of his experience
at a certain phish show.

he soaked his ticket in
lsd and entered
the cave stoned.

way stoned.

throughout the evening
the ticket biscuit
graced many tongues
and said friend

left the show for a breather
outside.

at the reentry gate
not enough of his ticket
remained to gain him
admittance so he bolted
through the turnstyle
and a chase ensued.

he ended up under the bleachers
and chilled there until
the heat withered
and upon exit he
was right at the rail
in like a special zone
and he managed to
blend i'm sure tearing
off more corners and
sharing.
