The Old Dad Cozmic Banditos did a drive by on Smith Rocks and Steins Pillar, staying at my mother's house in Bend.
She has put up with so many climbers crashing there over the last thirty years....what's a few more???

Steins is about an hour from Smith and I'd wanted to climb it since I was a kid so we decided to start there. Plus, it was a weekend at Smith so we opted to shy away from the crowd.

The camping is way mellow.

The hike in is nice too...if a bit lengthy.

The first afternoon, we humped some gear in, and did some overhanging buckets on a nearby formation.
Here's the Brave Little Toaster layin' the guns to it.

And Dr. Voodoo Child.

Lookin' at the beautiful Mill Creek Wilderness.

Looking out to the Cascades.

Churning,
You won't regret it. We had it to ourselves on a weekend.
Mid-week, the mellow factor alone is worth it.

Great TR and pix.

Looks like you are harassing the rattlers in the one pic (caption: Lookin' at the beautiful Mill Creek Wilderness.) Oh well, adolescent boys will be boys. ;-)

Yeah, been in Dublin 13 years next week. No snakes here except the human kind. I sure do miss the West Coast. I was only at Smith's once back in the early 1970s, never been to Stein's but I remember some pix of it, I think in Summit mag or Off Belay.
