I have some ideas. I'm asking permission from the family to do something special with his work. Ouch! once told me I could do anything I wanted with his stuff but it's only right we do what Allie and his best friend would like.

It's my guess that he's created over 1000 cartoons. They will be tough to find. We've tried before and gave up after a couple hundred.

Though it's yet to be determined how far we can take this if nothing else we should try to catalog here as many of his cartoons as we can find.

Here's what I propose to do that.

There are almost 7500 posts authored by Ouch!

Here is how you can find them:
http://www.supertopo.com/forumpostsearch.html?id=7819083

I propose that we get a group together and look through all of his posts. It would need to be done systematically.

I'm thinking we each take a block from the search results and look through his posts.

This is a URL for the second page of the search results.
http://www.supertopo.com/forumpostsearch.html?s=ratings&o=ASC&v=0&cur=10&id=7819083#list

if you modify cur= you'll get a new page of results Divide up the blocks 100 or 200 at a time and modify the url to look at "your" block of search results. Catalog the URL of any post with a

Who wants to help?

With the permission of the family i would like to then download as much of his stuff as we can and archive it on a website that we don't have to worry about losing. I offer not only my services in building an album with thumbs but also off my webserver.

His humor is world class and it only seems right to ensure we can reflect back and get a good laugh. As we all know this forum isn't really designed to allow for easy viewing of stuff like this. Also, a lot of his cartoons are on imageshack and who knows what might happen to that.

peace,
nature

Edit: Ha... in this thread Ouch! gave me all the "nonsense".

of course I could never feel right about owning it but I do feel right about spearheading an archiving project.

We have these things called Presidential Libraries. Allie mentioned her dad's email and other records. I could not figure a good way to suggest it to Allie, but I think all of "Sam's" stuff needs to be preserved.

I 'd like to help out, Doug. Today isn't good though, it's my birthday and going climbing and then out to dinner. Tomorrow though, I'm game. I'm usually pretty grim on birthdays, but this one's gonna suck bad...I'm doing a lead for Ouch today. Watch me, bro!

It's good idea that you've got, lets do it! What are you going to want me to do? Which block should I take?

I think/hope I did a good job in suggesting/asking to/of her that we somehow make sure his stuff is never lost.

What we're asking is to honor him so I can't imagine how they would object.

I suggest everyone do what I'm doing - search through his old posts for his cartoons. In the middle of the tears you will find laughter (and a lot of it).

The funny thing is Allen was all over many threads. Many I never visited. 8 out of 10 of the cartoons I've found I had never seen before.

The mileage he got from some of our pictures was amazing. #46 got the most though he never really had a shot of him I don't think. After that Blue Dog went many miles.

Apparently my Geoduck clam got some as well.

I would suggest getting ST's resident librarian, Mighty Hiker, to do help with the cataloging work.

And surely some ST digital artist should construct a virtual headstone with Bear 46 in his honor.

blue - cool and thanks and HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO!!!!!

There's no big hurry on this. I can't imagine the stuff will go anywhere any time soon. It'll take a while is my guess anyway. Enjoy yourselves out there!

Let's see who volunteers. I'm working my way through the most recent posts. I'll see how far I get and I'll determine a reasonable system to grab the data we need.

I'm thinking we'll end up with a list of urls to his images. I can write a script to run through the whole list and download the images to another server (awaiting permission for that). I can then set up a CMS (Typo3) that has the ability to catalog and thumbnail all of them. The CMS has a digital asset manager.

Let's not forget the succession process, either.

Plenty of us have waited for Ouch! to craft clever pictures that we could not do ourselves.

Nominations are open. (Sorry for thread drift, but this is a climbing forum. It just wouldn't do to have all of the politics shoved off the first page by the death of a beloved!)

I would nominate Watusi or Ammon, but they probably aren't around enough to pick up the load.

I could probably wade through all of the Ouch posts myself, fueled by extreme OCD.
Might take a wee bit, but I would get there eventually...

I assume all of these images are still on Ouch's computer?
It's one thing to get all of the cartoons into one place, but I think it's important to preserve the context
in which they appeared. Maybe make each cartoon a clickable link to reveal the thread they appeared in.

Nita - sounds like you need some more RAM for your PC. Go to Start > Control Panel > System
and you will see the amount of RAM you have. You should have at least 512 MB - hopefully more.

so true nita... so true...

HK. Let's do it in blocks. There's a ton of stuff that needs to be done. Certainly if you want to attempt to do it all that'd be great. Just pick a number and start working your way through. I do agree that each one should be preserved with context but that'll be even more work (though a lot of them stand on their own).

They are probably on his computer but I believe Allie is trying to respect his privacy and not dig too deep into his computer so we can't rely on that.

What I'm doing is opening in tabs from each search results page every Ouch! post. IF there is a comic in it I'm right clicking, copying the address, and then pasting it into a text document.

I'll be able to write a script that'll parse through that document and download to local or networked drive all of the images.

I'm thinking we should register a domain name to house his work under.
http://www.ouchcomics.com is available. Any other ideas?

HK, I was copying the link to the image on imageshack. Maybe we should to both the link to supertopo for the post and to the image? I can't really write a script that would get the image through supertopo. NEeds to be a direct link.

Sure... go ahead and start from the beginning. If we get three or four OCD people working on this we can hammer through 7500 links by tomorrow :-)

Copied to this thread from the original post by Allie about Ouch moving on.

With the 50th Nose event coming up, maybe some talented folks could get all of Ouch's images together plus what Allie has shared with us about her dad, print em up into a book via the Interweb, sell them at the Nose show in The Valley and donate the proceeds to an Ouch approved cause.

Or something along those lines.

Maybe offer said books for sale at Sushifests.

His art is priceless. And while much of it is animated, even the stills arranged in storyboard fashion would bust a gut. Perhaps they are humorous only to the denizens of this deep and twisted TacoStand. So what.

Ouch abides.

Ouch used Imageshack, but he also used Photobucket if I remember correctly.
So far, his earliest images are dead links. Here's a typical one:

http://solisstyle.com/ims/pic.php?u=4171Il1Ab&i=28625

He started posting here in late January '05, and his very first cartoons were of Crimpy's thumbs.
Those are all unavailable because those links are dead. Another thing is that sites like
Imageshack require that the links are clicked at least once a year to remain active.

Here's another example:

From Allie,

Ok...everyone help me out here. I think I found them all. going back to 2000 in something called Picasa. I figured out how to email the folders and need an email address to mail them to. Wow...I think I have what you need. I have to take a break from this and take my daughters to the Halloween store before it closes and then will be back here to see what you think. It was my bribe to them to stay here one more night to try and get all of this to you guys... : ) What can I say...they are teenagers after all... hehe.

I also found one cartoon he was working on in Photobucket that I am not sure if went out anywhere or not but looks complete. It may be the last one he had done. That is sort of sad if that is the case it would be a very good one to have...

I looked in ImageShack and there is nothing there because it appears when he completed them he moved them to this Picasa place.

Bear with me...I'm trying to get it together to do this and got so excited when I found these that I can barely type.

Let me know...he has them seperated into folders that are named under each year. There are hundreds and hundreds of them...

Back shortly...~Allie

Oh my goodness!!!

Here's what you'd need to do, Allie.

You'll need to take the entire directory structure (the upper most folder that contains the year folders and zip it). It'll convert the folders into a zip file which you can then most likely email. You have my email address and my account has no size restrictions so there shouldn't be a problem there.

Wow! this is exciting. It's a lot o' lot of work to get these one at a time. This would save us a ridiculous amount of time.

I'm running out now to watch the game but will be back later.

Edit: Oh, I just realized you said back to 2000. As Hardman KNOTT pointed out above he started posting here in '05. Maybe you should take a look at some of the 2005 stuff and see if it looks like the climbing gang. Then go through the stuff before that and see what that's all about. I'd hate to dig into personal stuff but maybe it's just more of his genius.

Having the latest one would be very cool too. I wonder what it is :-). Maybe you can email me that one and I'll post it here on the forum.
There's a lot of tech-savy folks on this forum so if you need help just say the word.

And keep in mind the real trouble we have right now is his stuff is on photobucket or imageshack and could disappear at any time. Though as Allie posted above she might have all of it.

Allie - the reason I suggested Skype (or AIM, or iChat, ect), is because you can send unlimited file sizes.
No need to break everything up into separate e-mails which seems incredibly inefficient and time-consuming,
considering e-mails generally have to be limited to 10 megabytes each. With Skype, ect, you just drag and
drop once into the chat window and then you can go to sleep, knowing that everything will get there without
further action. For example, I sent a friend a folder of photos which was 330 MB, which would have required
at least 33 separate e-mails. I just dragged and dropped it, and he had it a few hours later. It works great!

Allie - I have an AIM account login you could use. Email me at sniderthansnide (at) gmail (dot) com if you need it.

However, I would recommend Skype, as it is super-easy to set up, worlds better than AIM
(on an order of magnitude), and it can be set up in just 2 or 3 minutes. Plus, Nature has
Skype running 24/7.

http://www.skype.com

Just download the Mac or Windows version, install, and then pick a user name, and it
checks the network to see if the name is taken. Then just enter in Nature's user-name to
your list, open a chat, drop the one big folder into the window, then all of the work is done.

If your father's image folder is more than hundreds of megabytes (which would knott surprise me,
as many of his animations were 800 Kb to over 1 megabyte each), then snail-mailing a DVD as
LEB suggests might actually be a viable option. Do you know how big the folder is?
