I got lucky enough to score two tickets to the Kor show. Thanks David! The show was great! a packed house and several standing ovations. A real tribute to one of climbing's most iconic living legends. What a remarkably humble, sensitive and humorous man. He never bragged about his astounding accomplishments. He spent most of his time praising his partners. He has obviously become frail with his illness but his stamina was stoic and inspirational.

Oh and DaftRat you will never be Emperor of Yosemite. The Ditch already has a King. Royal Robbins as annoited by Layton Kor.

It was curious to hear that Layton hates the name Lumpe Ridge. Says it has annoyed him his whole life.

The Farris wheel story was a total hoot. And the rescue of the dog from the Black Canyon had the audience melting into emotional goo.

One of my favorite lines was when he talked about being accosted by a RMNP ranger for feeding nuts and raisens to a marmot. he said; "I found out I didn't like the ranger but the marmot was my friend".

The show was phenomenal although I would have liked to see more local stuff. Layton climbed an incredible amount of stuff around here but he only had a few pictures and stories. Lots of great desert stories, however. Probably the coolest thing was the crowd including: Dave Rearick, Pat Ament, Jeff Lowe, Jimmy Dunn, George Lowe, Lynn Hill, Jim McCarthy, Greg Lowe, Jim Logan, Gary Neptune, Bob Culp, Rick Accommazzo, Paul Sibley, Billy Roos and Harvey T. Carter. And that was just who I talked to or spotted in the crowd. There's an active Kor thread over at MP.com. Check it out.

Does anyone know how much money the show raised - tickets, book signings, etc? Hopefully it was a great success in that regard.

People who did not get a ticket should have shown up. I heard there were extra that folks were giving away.

Layton's stories were great and it was great to hear them. Like folks said lots of humor - especially the screaming while falling.

Rather interestingly while standing in line to get in, Sal and I met the grandson of one of Layton's cousins. He had never had the chance to meet Layton but had known of him. He got the chance last night. Then tonight I was talking with Layton and I mentioned that I sat with him and Layton mentioned that it was nice to meet some new family. I thought that was pretty cool.

Can anyone who was there share the dog story? I read all the comments in the MP thread and everyone kept saying how touching it was. I'd love to hear it.

Sounds like an amazing event. I'm envious of you Boulder folk.

As they were descending one of the gullies they hear a pitiful whining and, upon looking around, found a small dog in advanced state of dehydration lying on a ledge. They gave it a bit of water there but it was still too weak to get up so they carrier down to the river. Once there the dog drank from the river for 25 minutes.

I lost the details of the climb (Or maybe they were fishing) but whatever it was, when the got done the dog was still too weak to walk out so they carried it all the way up the gully and brought it home to Boulder.

The saddest part was that they had to give it away and Kor was obviously still emotional about it.

BTW, one of Kor's revealed secrets was that he was an avid fisherman and many of his trip to the Black were for fishing rather than climbing. He discovered it on a fishing trip.

Anyone else have any more recollections?

Mal - you left out a few things.

He was there fishing. On the way down a gully, leading to the river, he heard this dog whining from a ledge, stranded there. Kor went up and got the dog. He returned to the trail and set the dog down and it collapsed. It couldn't move on its own. He gave it some of their water, but it wasn't enough. He had to carry the dog the rest of the way down to the river. Once there, the dog drank for about 1.5 hours. They also fed the dog many of their nuts and raisins. The dog stayed with them.

Kor awoke during the night and looked over at the dog, next to him. It was motionless. He reached over and poked it and ... nothing. Kor thought its heart had given out. He covered up the carcass with his raingear and went back to sleep. Later on, Kor was awoken again. Kor mentioned many times he was a very light sleeper. The rainjacket was moving and a little dog face was visible in the light. Frightened at first, Kor became elated and grabbed the dog and gave it a big hug.

The next morning they hiked out. The dog still needed to be carried much of the way. When he arrived at his truck, he opened the door and the dog bolted in there. Kor figured the dog would never again miss the departing of its owners truck.

Kor had just signed a 6 month lease in Golden, and no pets were allowed. He found a family for the dog. He said it was one of the hardest things he's ever done - to give up that dog.

Horrah for the Dog story. I have some touching doggy rescue moments of my own. Gotta respect a man who has an appreciation for animals.

Wish I could make one of the shows. I'll be in Boulder a week too late. I guess I'll just have to get the book. Anyone who climbs the diamond face in winter has my admiration.

Just got back.

Wow what a trip!

This was really fun, doing a guerrilla video is a blast.
Went hell for leather to the peoples republic but almost had to stop to shoot a half day of fall colors on hi def in the mountains on thursday, but nooooooo gotta go.
Meeting with the AAC staff.
Meeting with the house counsel for Fat Lizard Productions to get release forms.
Meeting with Gary Neptune.
Meeting with the sound tech.
Meeting with the Macky co-ordinator.
Meeting with videographer Greg Lowe
Meeting with Peter Mortimer, Nicholas Rosen, Wade Johnson, and Jim Aikman at Sender Films (These guys are real champs. We couldn't have a good video if these guys hadn't stepped up to the plate.) Just as I was about leave Dean Potter walked in and I asked him if he was going to the show.
"What show?"
Later I said to Layton that Dean Potter was around and he said, "Who's that?"
2 phunny, I guess I'm between generations.

Then a meet with auxiliary staffer Kevin Kelly.
We go and pick up food and booze for the dressing room (on an "alcohol free campus", yeah, riiiiiight!)
As people start filling the seats there is still much to do, but then there is a bizarre scene in the men's room when I and a few other freshly lightened persons are briefly detained for still unexplained reasons by 4 campus cops (1 female!!).

"Whats going on?" the big one says.
"I'm going to wash my hands."
"Whats the tripod for."
"I'm shooting tonight's show on video."
"So whats going on?"
"I'm going to wash my hands. What is this about?"
"We got a report."
"About what?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I already TOLD you."
Then the head usher chimes in, "Yeah that is the manager for tonight's speaker."
"Well OK, you can go."

I don't know what happened to the others detained, but all in all I'm a little sorry that when he asked about the tripod that I didn't say it was for my "wide stance". :)

Anyway,....

I got the whole show on my camera except for a 17 second battery change (and that was covered by the Sender Films gang no doubt.)

The whole damn weekend was just as hectic, but what a friggen blast!!

Layton was plum tuckered out. (pause for the phone)

Just talked to him a minute ago (8:45 mountain time).
He just got home safe and sound. The wife is going for chinese take out.

Thats all for now folks..

Ron the dual encounters with Dean and Layton is one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Thanks for posting.
I am so glad I got to see the show. It was an honor! Yea Mal the who's who of attendees was cool But it was the unrestrained admiration and respect of Kor that was really cool. I have no doubt he could have packed a venue twice the size.

Flashes were banned but photography was rampant.

OK, big news;
This may be roadable.

LK had a great time and is into doing it again.

There would be many hurdles though.
Thursday came off thanks to all the help volunteered by the AAC , the good folks at Neptune Mountaineering (who have been giving back to the Boulder climbing community for more than 35 years), and numerous other people.

Pulling this off in another town would require comparable efforts, but who is going to step in?
How could we guarantee a minimum house sufficient for Layton and Karen to show a reasonable benefit? (the costs to do Macky/Golden were close to five figures)

Then there is Vegas.
Close by, so costs are minimal. The house could be smaller (plus he needs to tune up the show by trimming lots off and he could road test it at the same time).

Possibly even a Thanksgiving "SushiFest with Layton" type benefit event on the next or former day?
(just spitballing here,...... I'm gonna make some calls )

Thanks, Ron and Neptune Mountaineering and all the other helpers, for putting on a great event. If I can't make a repeat performance, I at least hope to buy the video.

Staging such events takes a very great deal of work, mostly volunteer. It helps that one has been done now, to establish that there's an audience and to 'train' the speaker. But putting on another event will take significant money, up front, and volunteer effort. I hope that as far as possible, all needed things will be donated.

Ron, my suggestion would be a Salt Lake evening during this winter's OR Show. Yeah there is always lots going on but there would be good sized crowd on hand to make it happen. There are several good venues.

The travel distance is not so much that it should not be a burden. And any needs that Layton might have could be arrange. Besides then those young whipper snappers running around the OR show who do not know about Layton could learn a little history.

I have enough contacts here that I would certainly be willing to work on making it happen.

I think I'd rather see the Kors go to a city that mostly appreciates what they DO have rather than one where so many don't deserve it.

I'm not talking about mormons BTW, and I have close friends in SLC, but I also have some very specific people there in mind.
A few of THEM even post here.

I hope they read this. (It is an example of the candor and forthrightness they lack.)

Its their stink that I'd rather not hold my nose for.
Other than that SLC is a welcome cosmopolitan change from much of culturally deprived Utah.
But as I told you Allen, I think Seattle, San Francisco, LA, or San Diego could do just as well or better.

It seems likely that Layton could do several shows, limited only by his interest and endurance. As the objective is to help him raise money for medical bills, and honour him and his climbing career, it's entirely up to him - whether/where/when.

Layton always gets "final cut", but he gives great value to the opinions of friends, perhaps even to a fault.
He certainly has regrets, but the most inspirational thing about him is that he always tries to make the best of things. He is doing the climb of his life now. It is a climb with no summit and each day brings new challenges.

But the alpenglow always seems to be the most beautiful late in the year.

Steve Bartlett is having a fundraiser for Layton this Thursday at Neptune's.

http://www.neptunemountaineering.com/neptune/

"Thursday, January 15 - Desert Towers presented by Crusher Bartlett - $5 (at the door)
Monster Tower, the Colossus of Cannonville, Staggering Rock, Northern Frights, the Garston Trout and Islet in the Sky. From the Fisher Towers to Monument Basin, from the San Rafael Swell to the Maze. Crusher Bartlett has been climbing desert towers for twenty five years, he will spin tall tales of taller hunks of rock, and show slides of some wild ascents on wilder towers set in the most beautiful scenery in the world. This is a fundraiser to buy Layton Kor a laptop. Suggested donation $5. Once Layton gets a laptop, we'll get more Layton Kor slide shows!"
