Yet another new spot on the map...first day of climbing and exploring...Mojede first scouted and photographed the area last winter, but it takes awhile to go check out everything the man has went and looked at.
Unfortunately Moj couldn't make it, so we pushed ahead armed only with the knowledge of a few photos and a decent idea of the location...
Sucking Inert Gases
Fun on a big slab
Still a project
Another fun pebble
There was alot more I didn't have time to snap photos of...but I'm sure we'll be returning to the area...
Hope you got out and climbed as well....
Cheers,
Tom

You sure that I've been there before? Give me a subtle hint--had not the cell phone ended up in realmojede's purse at work, me and the littluns would have been along for the fun.

That's kinda the eventual idea Ed...except just for the Batholith area. Montana's a big place...
There actually is a (select)bouldering guide for Montana in the process...but I shouldn't get myself started on the issue...
Mojede - It's the 'new bourbons'...the stuff on the northside of the private inholding. Guess that really wasn't a hint...

A real hint may have been more fun, but I get the gist--there's a whole bunch of stone over there, glad to see that you got to finally do a foot tour of the area.

So much rock...I ran around for awhile trying to get a grasp on the area, but after realizing how big it was, I figured I'd just get oriented to the front side of it...didn't get back to the really orange stuff...
Still didn't find this one
but I found this one

ips? that's pretty sad. lots of the sierras look like that. overgrown, ueber-dense, and more and more dead and dying pines waiting for the next fire.
cool looking area, though. maybe one of these days ill get back up north.

I think it's the Mountain Pine Beetle rather than the IPS, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's been pretty hard on the forest...People have been logging it out a fair amount from what I've seen, but it seems to be killing trees at a much faster rate...

Hey Tom, fine work man. It's nice to see your crew getting after it so consistently. Very inspiring.
I was checking out some boulders the other day in the Tobacco Roots while scouting for elk. Unfortunately they were stuck under the truck. Maybe I should have gone out climbing instead.

Snow-
I was skiing fresh snow at Georgetown lake in the first week of September (about 5-6 inches). Took the dogs out 30 to 40 minutes. Also, was just at the shop getting my snowblower checked out.

Thanks y'all! cool to see this is still on the FP rather than pushed way back by the political talk....
Snow in June and snow in early September(none over the weekend) ...so two months snow free up here on the divide! Honestly though, as y'all have seen, only the coldest/hottest/snowiest days detour climbing out there. Very doable year-round.
EDIT: Kartch- sounds like unpleasant situation with the truck. Hope you get yer elk...and some climbing in too!

The following week (yesterday):
Andrew on a tricky slab--I backed off it, nice send A.
Zana working her pebble magic. AWhit sent the arete to her left; proud.
Nice little route to the right of the preceding, mine to name.
Zana following me up a little hand crackie.
Nice find, A--bring the crew and the pads for this one, Tom.
It doesn't look so mean from this angle.
From the side: note A and Z for size comparisons.
Last, but certainly not least, we played on this tamer micro. It's no gimme, only Andrew got it. I got to the crux entrance by a saddle bronc Leavitation move--it will be a fun one to succeed on.
Matching at the horizontal is the launch point for this.
Awhit lunging for a "foot" hold.
TKingsbury is heading up later today (Sunday) to further the exploration. Photos to follow on Monday ?

So is that area about the same latitude as Whitetail Reservoir?
Looks north of Delmoe from what little I can see in the pics but that area is such a freaking maze I was still getting turned around after exploring there for years. For all I know you were south of the highway.
Maybe Chongo should move there to meditate. It would beat sleeping under a semi.

Griff, no on Whitetail, yes on South of the Highway.
Those two highways (3 if you want to get technical, 4 could be accurate, too) running through the Batholith are its arteries. Just don't get me on the subject of the veins :-)

Griff-
Very cool! I love finding out about past explorers of the batholith. You have any pictures/stories/areas? man, we should talk, because there is alot of greatness in those hills. If not here, by email...but I'm sure others would be interested too.
Hard to get a grip on what people have done...beyond talking to a couple of people, I have a hard time piecing together much for bouldering history. Locals like Dwight Bishop etal, seemed to be spending time tackling the larger formation...but I have heard stories about missoulans in the 70s spending days wandering and climbing the boulders...I have yet to tack down better info about that though...
While there has been some exploration near whitetail/nez perce road, this stuff is actually south of the interstate. Northside of the interstate/delmoe lake road has alot to offer as well. Have you seen any of the other of the past batholith postings? I can post some links...
BTW, you ever boulder the area on Delmoe lake road, where you first cross the tracks coming from the pipestone exit?
thanks Jaybro!
Cheers

MOj and TKing,
I wasn't asking you to let any cats out of the bag so to speak!
Yeah TK I first explored just above the tracks you speak of (the Desert Zone we called it as opposed to the more northern and western forested areas) and was drawn back to the area alot! Just kept creepin north, never really felt I scratched the surface and was so content exploring there that I only ended up south of the highway a couple times.
This isn't any cool ancient history or anything. We're talking late 80's through the 90's. Whenever the crew I knew in Bozeman were going to "Pipestone" they were of course refering to the large popular formation on Delmoe road.
The guys I worked with took me trailriding on dirtbikes out there and I was blown away by all of the cool rock gardens we went through. Me and a buddy would Mtn. bike or dirtbike way back into some of these off the beaten path zones with shoes, a short rope and a lite rack.(we were only 5.9-5.10 guys and didn't want to break an ankle!) Mostly we'd look for sweet hands and fingers to T.R. or do little mini leads. Plain old bouldering of course too. We just climbed for fun and didn't take any notes or anything. Hell sometimes we couldn't even find our way back to some of the stuff we did.
There are some pretty tall formations tucked away back there as well. They occasionally stick out of the side of a steep hill and don't stand above the trees and are a pleasant surprise.
Super fun times. Oddly the place has a long climbing season for MT. Thats why we went there so much.
I know this is a long post but WTF. Thanks so much for continually posting pics of this area. I still have a lot of great friends out there and I WILL be back!

Griff, it's a very tiny cat in a very large bag; it didn't get out, it just walked around inside of the expanse :-)
I know what you mean by saying the pebbles look familiar, the area is sooo large that boulders and zones within it all start to look the same after awhile--one of the many splendors of the place.

Really cool Griff,
Don't think we're giving away too much...just enough to get people interested.
Desert Zone...that's a cool name, fun stuff too. We've done about 60 or 70 problems in there, I'm betting you've pulled on more than a couple then...
this is that center tall guy on the east side of the road there..
As for not finding your way back to stuff...that seems to happen. Some of those cool 'out in the woods' boulders never seem so easy to find as when you just wander into them. More than once I tried to take someone back to some further back spots, and just ended up lost out there, running into other stuff...
Thanks for the post, really, good stuff. Enjoyable to read about people out on those rocks.

I saw Mojedes post (I think it was his) walking with folks along the train tracks. That was cool. We used to ride motorcycles over that high trestle- that's a rush.
I'll dig out my old map tomorrow to refresh my memory and just give you a basic idea where we knocked around. I used to try to figure out on a map about where we were but there are so many folds in the landscape I could never be sure. My best map was in my head and it's been a while. I'm not sure but I think some of your posts refer to zones west of the loop in the train tracks. We always parked on the Delmoe rd.
Could you post the link to that map you put up before the batho- boulderfest? I'm curious where the zones are on the west side of the Divide/ rest area. I thought there was something on that map.
I should plan a trip out there next spring/summer. If I make it to MT, I WILL go to Pipestone. My "far away" bouldering excursion this past spring was Oak Flats in AZ. It was neat but I'd rather go back to the batholith.
BTW: those Humbug spires look awesome! Never went there but those photos are great.

Just got off the phone with Pat, he's hanging out at a hanging belay on Devil's Tower. New aid route near 'the window'...4th new route of the trip. I guess he even snagged a new freeline too...
not sure when he's heading back, sounds like he's going to vedauwoo then the creek, with stops between...he did say he'll be back for the winter season though...
As for a midweek session, I'm aiming for Thursday, leaving round noonish...
