OK folks the slide show of the century is in a month at the AMC and there are 350 seats @ $20 apiece, limit 5 per purchase.
Take a trip to the birth of modern rock climbing with its most pivotal figure as Layton reminisces about the Diamond, Yosemite, the Dolomites, the Black and, yeah baby, the desert!!

Tickets go on sale on 9/16 at 10:00am MDT.
You can buy ,in person only, at Neptune's.
They are also available online at the AAC website.

That's it. Don't clog up the lines. No phone sales.

To show support for Layton BUMP THIS THREAD till there is no tomorrow!!!!

Layton is dealing with more important concerns right now. The visit to Golden will be a taxing undertaking and the club is doing what it can to make this go easy.

Hmmmm,... not really fair to say one thing and jump the gun, but I think they'll take longer than an hour to sell out and the seats aren't matched to tickets (general seating).
So I guess that there will be a line forming on the afternoon of the ninth.

I know that 7k won't pay a lot of bills, assuming he gets 100%. I would hope that the proceeds from any scalping be forwarded.

I think he should consider a second show, though. Perhaps at Boulder Theatre. I think many would want to see him 2x, after the "warm up". Probably be another sell-out, even at $40 or whatever. I think most people know where the money is going. I have extra bucks for that. Boulder Theatre is a fun place. They serve beer. Dinner is nearby. Etc.

OK OK OK!

I'm jumping the gun here, but know that the AAC has been overwhelmed and that as I write this they are searching for a larger venue (much more preferable to having a repeat).

No guarantees yet, but there is hope.

There were people camped outside Neptune's and because of an ISP glitch the onsite sales started prematurely.
If people are pissed they have good reason, but there is no villain here and people ARE working hard to make things right.

Stay tuned, the drama continues,..

The show will be at Mackay Auditorium on the CU campus in Boulder.
It seats 1200.

As I type this efforts are underway to make the tickets for the remaining 850 seats available to all the people that got shut out by the sellout yesterday.

Any suggestions as to how to contact anyone that bought tickets for cash at Neptune's yesterday to tell them it won't be in Golden would be greatly appreciated.

Already anticipated the Golden-Boulder lag, but only allowing a half-hour (moved to 7:30), since they're not likely to show at the last minute.

It might actually be possible to reconstruct a roster if people who waited at Neptune's chime in about who they saw,..

There were only ten people ahead of me in line and the last two tickets got sold to the two people behind me. I know four of those people. I've called them. Neptune's said they would put up a notice in the shop letting customers know about the change in venue.

I can post something on MTN PROJECT for people to read.......

Does this new change in ticket availability mean I won't get $100 each for my tickets? That was going to fund my roadtrip to Yosemite!!!

Layton got back from Mexico late last night and had a headache much of today, but McCarthy is already making travel arrangements for the whole Kor family to attend, and after the tall guy and I crunched the numbers on the new bigger room he sounded quite pleased with the value of the effort.

Maybe if this works well he would be inclined to do some larger rooms in a few cities, but there are numerous considerations to be addressed. For now if anybody wants to catch his show (and help him out by going) I'd say this is the only game in town, except it'd be more like this is the only town in the game.

Check this thread (or the AAC website) tomorrow for updates on available tickets.

Layton is one of the most enthusiastic people I ever climbed with. Whenever we got to the base of a route, he couldn't wait to get on the rock.
In 1988, he first told me about "this 1000' limestone wall in Mexico" (must have been Portero Chico) and wanted to go there to climb new routes.
I hope I can get tickets this time. I missed the last lottery as we were driving from Squamish back to Colorado.

Lottery is not the right word, but in any case the line at Neptune's is gone and there are tickets left.
Still, my guess is that after the screw up on tuesday most people decided to try the online route.

This still could, hopefully, sell out.

He had a consult today, everything copacetic.

Over 800 seats have sold and now he's starting to get butterflies but I told him, hell, he can't go wrong. Everybody loves him. Just walk out on time, smile, show the pictures and tell people what they're seeing. Everybody's happy.
Doing slideshows on a laptop is a piece of cake next to putting up the Enos Mills Route.

Layton is getting an assist from Neptune's on the book signing thing and it could well be done independently of the show as he will be there for the weekend, so it might be arranged as a 'physically deliver your book at a time and place and then pick it up there at a specific later day and time'.
The idea is to not stress him out, especially before the show. Much depends on the NUMBER of books to be signed so we may set up some kind of online deal to register in order to gauge the interest.

BTW it is rumored that of over a thousand seats available there are very few left. If Neptune's is already sold out then there are barely more than a dozen left online as of 15 minutes ago.

Layton's minor surgery went off without a hitch yesterday, although anybody who's been through Valley Hospital in Vegas knows how long they take.
He was supposed to be out at 2:00.

Then at 4:00

Then at 5:00

So I went and shuttled a vehicle and got a ride back for him only to find that he wouldn't be out till after 7:30.
I almost had to shuttle across town just to pick up my clear glasses. As it was, driving back in twilight wearing dark prescription glasses, I drove faster than I wanted only to get to the digs before I was blind.

But it turned out well.
Jorge and Joanne Urioste were there and, of all people, Rick Horn showed up and they spent much time chatting.

It must be more than 40 years since they climbed the Totem Pole.

All kinds of problems still to be surmounted.
The good news is that Neptune's has committed to handle the book signing. There will be some limitations though; copies of Beyond The Vertical only with a minimum donation of $50/book. The books will have to be dropped off, and then picked up with proper ID at a later date (dates still to be determined).
Do NOT call Neptune's. The specifics will be net posted.

As for the video of the show, I'm not counting my chickens till the footage is in the can. There will be an attempt. With certain stipulations the people at Macky have agreed, but the most important "record" there is the audio recording as the images can be better reproduced from a direct digital source.
But this has led to a fantastic idea courtesy of Kevin Donald.
Why not have both a "live" and "studio" version of the show???
The studio version could even be extended to include more material than the constraints of a live show allow.

I'm also working on ancillary interview vignettes with noted climbers who give their take on the Kor influence.

Nobody has refused! Its a testament to what a stand up guy Layton has always been.

This has been a rewarding if frenetic creative process, but any more good ideas are welcome.

Does this mean he will only sign copies of BTV?
(works for me personally, but know other people who mentioned bringing other books)

Still trying to decide if bringing the book along for signing is something I want to risk.

If you booked an airplane ticket and are flying in for the show from, a few states away, what then? Don't mind the payment-for-signing arrangement at all, and was planning to contribute more than the minimum, but unless I can get my book back to babysit home with me when I fly back at the end of the weekend, I don't think I'm risking it. Realize everyone has limitations here, and that's cool. Just tossing some thoughts out.

Just left Layton's place this morning.

Here is the word on donation.
Layton does not wish to be compensated without giving something in return. For the price of a ticket he gives a show and with the book signing he adds value, but beyond that he wishes nothing.

Now, I'm no fool. The People's Republic of Boulder is likely the biggest show on earth for Layton Kor. Its a home base where you not only can't swing a dead cat without hitting a climber, but also can't find a climber who hasn't done his routes.
Further afield doing shows would inevitably yield diminishing returns so the video seems the best way to successfully market Layton's offering.

I shot a terrific pre-show interview yesterday and have gotten OKs from everyone else I've asked for supporting interviews including Largo, Donini, Mike Kennedy, and a couple of guys named Lowe.

With the instant sellout the show will keep the wolves from the door, but with just a little luck the video will keep them away for good.

Hi Ron,
Thanks again for all your efforts on Layton's and the climbing community's behalf.
It is so very much like Layton to shun remunerations not tied to performance. However any one who might wish to do so, could help your team, and Layton with the production expenses which will undoubtedly be incurred during the making of any live and/or studio versions of the video slideshow.
As you know, it is the "seed" funding that is so very important in getting these cinematic projects off-the-ground. Perhaps a minimum donation to a "Kor Video Fund" could be rewarded with a finished DVD? Just a suggestion.
Best,

I hear ya and I totally respect that. This is not a nag (I know you're putting in a ton of work to get this thing to happen and we all owe you for that), but I'd love to contribute if someone can sort out this book stuff.

Well in truth I have priorities that remain ordered.
First is to create an income stream for the Kors, so we have to cater the writing etc. towards the nonclimbing public, but the archival value has not escaped me and there is plenty of room for climber oriented material in bonus features.

The additional footage will eventually be accessible to the climbing community as well, but that is down the road.

Ron, I am so pleased to hear that I and the rest of the community that wont be able to attend will be able to experience this event even if it isn’t in person.

A documentary using the resources available to you, namely the man himself and the many living icons of our sport that would be proud to testify to the fact that Layton Kor’s influence through his talent, vision and raw unbridled energy , provided inspiration that drove them to success in their own climbing careers!,
This could realistically result in a classic piece of mountaineering history. .

Am I missing something, or have the finalized details of the book signing not been posted anywhere?

I'm trying to figure out what I'll be doing next week, but I can't plan much of anything until I know how the book drop off/pick up will work. I don't live in or near Boulder.
