is it better to pack in just enough for one hit, or should i jam in as much as i can fit?

i say pack it lightly and loosely and fill the whole bowl. just take a little green if sharing. But, I am no expert on this matter.
EDIT: With a bong, just a little for one hit. Why a lot when u can just pack it again and pull at will.

I say try a few different ways and see what works best for you. Or Maybe, it all depends on the kind of weed u have. Mellow? Trippy? buzzy? Wheel Chair weed...the stuff that just cripples you? Or maybe u are at a stand still because you already tried every conceivable possible way and are still confused......and Very stoned?

The critical factor is the application of flame.
I usually go for the "4 o'clock" direction, but if there is no wind might brave a "10 o'clock" light.

You need to switch to a Hybrid.

OK, first off.
With the price of Hy Grade nowadays, anything but a single hit is like watching nickels and dimes float away.
Second, that gold pipe seen on page 1 is really a crack pipe, so that guy is a total poser, trying to act like a cool stoner.
Third, you need to Percolate if you want to get a Crumpin.
Fourth, if you ain't spinning Family Affair by Mary J Blige, well, there is no hope for you, my friend.
Fifth, is there anybody who wants to get baked and go climbing?
We had a group called The Wipemasters back in the early seventies.
Used to bake and hit Castle.
So you see, there were other groups out there just like the Stonemasters, you just ain't never heard of em thats all.
Anyway, any Wipemasters want to hit the rocks?

Actually, it's the other way around, Rox. Smoking a bowl causes a loss of efficiency. Mainly because of the differences in temps between smoking and vaporizing. Smoking, you have temps of 500-700*C, vaporizing, you have temps of around 185*C (minimum), which is the temp at which the THC becomes transformed into inhalable form.
The serious disadvantages of of smoking are inhalation of toxic combustion by-products, along with the desired ingredients - these being carcinogenic, causing serious respiratory irritation. Also, the uncontrolled combustion temp of smoking causes the unnecessary destruction of the majority of the ingredients, thus squandering the the original material. Smoking is thus not only damaging to your health, it is also inefficient.

Another difference with vaporizing is an incredibly clean high, versus being stoned. I suppose it depends on what you like. I don't like the immediate feeling of the need to eat, be a slug and then sleep as much as that of being high.

Nefarius, vaporizers are OK, but you need a ton of weed to keep it fed.
OK if you are a grower or a millionaire.
The Volcano is way cool.
500 bucks, but a quality product.
There is a new pipe on the market that sells for 60 dollah.
It has a pumice stone between the smoke and the lighter, so the flame never hits it.
The jury is still out, slightly more hassle to clean, but maybe worth it.
There are vending machines that dispense in LA.
Leave it to the Freak Capitol of the World, thank you.
Schmutz, if you were a true Hipster, that pipe would be formed from a single piece of 1 foot square tin foil.
Imagine alchohol illegal and pot legal.
Then your attitudes towards the useres do a 180, WTF, over?
Oh, BTW, they have just shown that pot shrinks lung tumors in certain instances, so shut up all you health freaks, do not give me a hard time.

This pretty much depends on your political stance...
Conservative = Smaller bowls = less high but more packing, which I know a lot of conservative folks love to do (conservatism is a metal disorder)
Liberal = Bigger bowls = Lots of wasted product through smoldering, more friends through sharing (liberalism is a metal disorder)

If you cram-pack it, you are going to have to give it a stir partway through, and try for an "apple turn-over" which is nice. It is a skill all its own to do it right, but you run the risk of inhaling a mouth full of ash-- the dreaded "choke-toke".
My advice: pack a 3/4 bowl that has been ever so gently squeezed and rolled between the finger tips (high five Raydog) so as to slightly break apart the bud, thus allowing for complete and vigorous vaporization of biomass. Filling to capacity is wasteful and anti-Jedi.
You will miss-out on the "apple turnover" scene, but will be able to float on the satisfaction of knowing that you did everything in your power to unlock the nuclear potential of the cheeba. I think you will be able to appreciate the difference.

funny thread. once while camping in the forest near my friends house, and after he left on the fourwheeler with the piece, we built one out of the dirt. made a v-thread with a stick, made a bowl out of the cap from an acorn, rolled up a newspaper to use as a mouthpiece and filled the paper with frayed lint from our jeans to keep the dirt and dust sucked up to a minimum. and who ever said stoners aren't resourceful, creative of funny?
EDIT: and it is all about good herb packed in one hitters. everyone gets some freshies... you stoners

Tap Plastics has US Bong size colored plastic tubing, the exact same stuff you pay 20 a pop for.
An 8 foot section makes 13.7 travel bongs, or 10.6 table top models.
Never hand the ladies a bong that has resin stains, it fraks them out.
Impress them with your brand new implements for a mere whatever it is they charge for the tube because, um, i forgot, i think it was ten or 15 bucks, so 1 doller a bong instead of 15 or 20.
My favorite DIY model was a stolen Denny's coffee pot which is shoe glued onto a piece of pipe, loaded with ice and water, look out, expando diesel possibilities.
sorry, looks like 2" by 6 foot is 26 bucks, so re do the math.

Remember, the hydro stuff needs more breakdown before the final pack.
Otherwise, you get a "hanger".
Coat hangers are for amateurs.
A shorter bong will generate more vacuum, if you are having trouble getting a good slap down.
Outdoor plants that have a tight manicure will dis-assemble right between your resin soaked fingers, no scissors required.
