I remember the brew-ha-ha about opening it. Light pollution, etc. Now... Lobster toquitos and the cool chick that always hooks up my marguiritas. But really, is it worth it? I kinds miss viewing the basin 360 without all that light in the sky. Just rambling here- there's a shot of the lake in my dfac I see every day and I miss home.

Just a thought .... I'm thinking mango margaritas.

Actually, they make them pretty weak at the Mobil station, although very mango-y. Last time I was there, I brought my own tequila to "fortify" them [in the port/brandy parlance]

Hey! I thought you quit drinking?!

You've got yerself a point there, Capt. Kirk. So when are you coming back to Yos, anyway? Haven't seen you in ages, man! We need to like, hang out in the meadows and drink some beers, eh? Maybe you need to deliver an 18-wheeler full of pitons to the Mountain Shop or something. If so, say hi to my buddies Ted and Bernie.

So is there another Mobil station on the planet where you can get a marg? Probably not.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and the young lass behind the counter, without knowing squat about me other than I was headed to Tuolumne to hook up with some friends, starts to give me the beta to solo a 6 pitch route on Cathedral. Don't know another Mobil station with that kind of service.

It's too bad about the lights...

Incidentally, the owner and chef at the Mobil was recently in a pretty serious kitchen accident involving a propane explosion. Most of his body received burns and he's in pretty bad shape.

I apologize for the buzz kill.

hey there blitzo... say, i was just going to thank you for all the neat shares of these bottles of tequila... i never see the "fancy stuff"... nice to know...

but now, more important... very sorry to hear about the chef's accident.... in texas, a man was injured that way when someone left a partially full propane tank at the welding place where he worked... very sad... he was never the same physically again...

i will pray too... very sorry to hear...

say----i do not know what the mobile station is...

when we were kids, mobile was a gas station, oh, my... .with the pegasus wings, etc....

i just dropped in here to see what it was in respects to this post... god bless to the man and his family....

re - the owner and chef being in a bad accident -

half true. The owner and the chef are two different people. So the owner has some very serious burns over a lot of his body, but the chef (Matt) is OK. Very sad.

They have a new margarita mix this year. Last year they were receiving negative feedback about weak margaritas. So they added one hole bottle to a five gallon mix! They are now MEGA STRONG. I got one a couple of weeks ago that tasted like a shot of tequila every sip. I was so hung over the next day. Bad. Puked a couple times. Just tried to drink water all day.

hey there blitzo.. say, thanks... say, it is based on the old mobile gas stations or not?

they had a red pegasus... (hmmm, at least i THINK it was red---was too long back, we were just kids---we liked seeing it on road trips, as perhaps, we wish we could of "rode" one) ... :)

That's what I heard as well. Used to be you could drink a couple margaritas there and feel nothing, after which, it wasn't worth spending more money on em. But I hear they are strong now.

Tip, the tufa special (which they always have) means you get two beers for the price of one. (not that I'm much of a drinker but a beer with dinner is nice at 1/2 price.

Hope the owner is Ok. Sorry to hear that

Oh, I see, but that is still weak.

I like using the Cuervo pre-mixed margarita and mixing it 50/50 with some good anejo tequila. On the rocks. The slushy ones always give me brain freeze.

I'll have a drink with you anytime. I won't be at Mobil anytime soon. It's a long expensive drive from here in Joshua Tree. Maybe late August or September.

WTF? Margarita mix?? True margarita mix is lime juice, thats it! The rest of the cocktail is alcohol. A true margarita is tequila (3oz), squeeze of lime(1oz) and some Cointreau(2oz). If you are a pussy you can add a little simple syrup. Freakin light weights around here...

Mobil Station blows assss. Weak drinks, overpriced food, poseur central, and no F'n soap in the windshield washing buckets... you would think at $28.50 a gallon for gas they could put $.12 cents worth of soap out a day. That and all the deadbeats "stealth" camping up the road make this roadside hell hole one to miss.

Strider,
Your recipe is a good one. Here are 2 more:

Recipe #1
2 parts Cuervo Gold
1 part Rose's Lime or Fresh Lime Juice
1 Part Triple Sec
Serve on the rocks. Frozen margs are for girls.

This one is the basis for Boulder's famous Rio Grande margs. Before you dis this becuse it doesn't use fancy tequila or Grand Marnier, try it. I save the good tequila for sipping with a squeeze of lime and Grand Marnier is for people who think they're drinking good liquor.

Recipe #2 Try this one before you laugh:
1 part Cuervo Gold (or whatever)
1 part Lemon-Lime Gatorade
Serve on the rocks. Frozen margs are for girls

I've never ever had anyone deliver anything but complements when I serve this one up. Until they see the Gatorade bottle of course. My recommendation is to pre-mix and hide the Gatorade bottle. Your guests will kill you for the recipe. This one is courtesy of Brittany Griffith.

Drink safe,
Mal

If there really is a signifiacant problem with light pollution,
have you looked at the fixtures to see if they could be fixed by adding better sheet metal shielding around the edges?

Why the f#ck would I drive to Alabama to camp?

That station's filled with nought but Eldo-prancers past their prime and lost pad people.

Mango margs are lite.

update that was published in last week's Mammoth Times on Thursday -

Dennis Domaille, owner of the Tioga Mobil Mart, sustained second and third degree burns over 45 percent of his body when a propane tank he was filling ignited on July 9, 2008. The most recent update to his condition is from his sister who reports that he is now on 'assisted ventilator' - he intiates his breathing and the ventilator helps him complete it - and is continuing to heal. He has received skin grafts that are healing nicely. His kidneys are having difficulty and he is on a dialysis machine, which is very common with burn patients. Instead of flowers, which he can't accept at this time, his family requests that any well-wishers consdier making a donation to the UC Davis Burn Unit, which is over impacted and trying to build another burn unit next door. Donations can be sent to UC Davis Burn Unit, c/o Len Sterling, 2315 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95817. For more information, email leonard.sterling at ucdme.ucdavis.edu .

So, finally, the day has arrived. I have no heroes left.

Russ, you don't use soap to wash windows. Egads, man, I thought you were omniscient. No, maybe just a drop in the water to help the squeegee slide. But never use soap to wash windows.

i was in school in santa clara in the early 90's, and i remember the entire city of san jose switched to orange tinted street lights so as not to interfere (as much) with the peering eyes up at the lick (sp) observatory.

maybe the owner of the gas station could be convinced to change from the typical flourescent lights to the orange tinted type?

yea. star interference sucks.

Just back from spending a few days in the mammoth area and glad to report I did not stop by the Mobil. Last couple times there sucked. The foods decent. All the hype ended up killing the place.

For gas and pizza/food, this dirtbag supports the Crowley Lake Shell. Great service, low prices.
