Guys, need beta on Wishon camping, do they allow camping outside of the campground? I know they do at Courtright but have never camped at Wishon.

If yes are there any decent spots?

Yup that dirt forest service road offers lots of options to camp.
Mostly flat ground with big trees and a couple of side tracks.
go back maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile and its great.
Its just after junction w/big sign for Courtright Res.
The guys who sell wood to the pay campground folks behind the store
comes up there to saw up down trees during the day. Don't leave
your stuff unattended.

If you really want to get sandbagged go and do a Loomis route at Courtright. Legendary.

As a climber, why Wishon and not Courtright? Wishon is great for fishin' and swimmin', but Courtright is the place to be for climbing.

Just sayin'.

It is closed early and late season. Wishon is open longer.

When we were at both places awhile back the bugs were fierce. They had big biters, somewhat akin to horseflys. They didn't bother me too much but ate up the person I was with. We finally had to leave cause forgot the bug spray.

"As a climber, why Wishon and not Courtright?"

There are a number of gems at Wishon, some hidden, some not, that can't be found at Courtright. One, right out in the open, is the roadside crack on the way down to the tunnel entrance at Wishon. Starts hands/fingers, to a roof, then goes fists to OW for the second half... Awesome climb.

Wishon's a cool place, don't get me wrong, but Courtright has sooooo much tasty stuff.

Hmmm.. interesting. Have been going there for years, some seasons most weekends, month after month. Never had a bug problem there. The only place I've ever really seen mosquitoes is at the creek crossing when heading to Tiger Wall...

Thanks for the feedback and beta.

Wishon was a blast over 4th weekend. Sorry no pix, have not bought that waterproof camera yet.

Water is some 70 feet below high mark and as a result there are tons of cliffs right along the water line that have opened up.

All you do is swim from spot to spot and try problem after problem falling back into deep water.

We ticked about 15 diff ones from v0 to v5 or so and as high as 30 feet (some would go up to 40-50 feet but we were too chicken to try them out). All along the north-west side. There are plenty more on the east side as well that we have not had time to get to.

@Jody,

Tried to find that on Google map. Do you have a reference so I can find it on google maps?

Thanks

I don't know what it is called, but you can scramble to the top, but it's almost harder than leading it. Did you leave big gear? Could be time for a trip up there.

i didn't have big enough gear for the wide section and got sketched out with some of the loose rock. drinking tons of beer for cinco de mayo probably didn't help.

Anyone know if the Wishon / McKinley Grove road is open yet?

No loose rock on the above route.... trying to approach the top without leading the thing would be brutal.

Pretty sure they usually leave it closed until May 1st, even if there's no snow

My buds and I drove across the dam to find the road closed. Drove down to Shaver to check out Kerkoff Dome. Awesome. Did I say it was good? And the approach up the old cog railway is not to be missed.

That's a bummer. Ended up not mattering... I finally take some time away from the biz to go climbing and all three people that were supposed to go with me today flaked. Sigh. So ended up working on a couple of my cars instead.
