This is my 3rd bus. '77, '87, and now 90
My brother (Mooser) and I have always had the VW itch. We both grew up inheriting the family '67 Bug. When i got it, it was pretty much in boxes and had to build it if I really wanted to drive it :p

zardoz, how did you get it smogged? Smog check was the bane of our existence when all we drove was VWs. Once the engine would pass smog it ran like crap. Phucking throttle positioners, messed up timing on 009 distributors, bad memories. Most of the squarebacks and Type 4s got junked because of the smog issues. We partied hard when the 74 and early models became exempt.

Well, valve adjusting was a fun way to spend time, if your knuckles weren't bleeding from getting wire holders off.

I always worked very gingerly back there until first blood. After that it was a lot more relaxed.

Once I was changing spark plugs for a friend, the #4 was a bitch to get at and I usually did it blind fishing my left arm through the engine compartment door holding the spark plug socket against any cross axis torque and the right arm to muscle the wrench.

It was a tight fit, and I didn't want to strip the threads. What I couldn't see was that my right hand was up against some sheet metal, which cut me and streamed a bit of blood down my hand. My friend was just watching. When I got it out and removed my hands I startled, "I'm bleeding! Why didn't you say something?"

"Oh," she said, "I thought you were just acting macho."

Not a VW, but just as popular, a Z car, with brake shoes rusted (tightly to say the least) TO THE DRUMS.

I tried, while not everything, most of everything. Would not budge

My solution, with a six foot breaker bar on the nut.

When the thing popped it sounded like I had set off a bomb in the garage.

Michele came running out to see if I was dead and NO BLOOD WAS SHED.

VW Remembrances

I’ve owned 6 VWs in my day, one 62 Bug and 4 different vans: Brand new 1955, a brand new 1958, a used 1960 bought from Dave Hanbury, and a used 1954 bubble top all equipped with cabinets and bed (bought it from Russ McClean). Drove it for a year or two. Loved it. We called “The Magic Bus”. Used to drive it down the center of Manhattan Beach Boulevard with the side doors open and the audio system blasting out Beatles tunes. Ah, the Magic Bus. Gave to my surfer son for his birthday. He took it south into Mexico and it was stolen.

The brand new 1962 VW Bug – best car I ever owned (except maybe my 1977 Honda Civic).

I had my copy of Muir’s maintenance book and I did all the work on the Bug for all the years I owned it – gave it to my oldest daughter in 1972.

One year, maybe 1968, driving on the Ventura Freeway on my way home, as I descended an off-ramp, I noticed a wobble in the front right wheel. Luckily, only had a short drive to my home. Got home, jacked up the front end and discovered the right wheel was on the verge of coming off the axle.
The day before I had greased the front wheel bearings. In the process of remounting the wheels, I forgot to secure the lock on the axle nut and it had slowing been untightening itself to the point of departure from the axle. Dumb and lucky.

My sister bought that 1965 vw for right about that price

Went thru several family members

I did a complete rebuild and it ran like atop

Got nearly 40 mpg

Sold it

And got that z car

Doing valves was just time consuming. I rarely found one that was out.

Generator replacement. NO thanks, though I got it done.

If you find that the valves need frequent adjusting then there is a good chance the head studs are pulling out. Frequent cause is excess compression. The heads need to be cc'ed and shimmed after milling them. Extra compression will jack up performance for a while then the motor dies.
