Bad weather this week has driven me to do something somewhat productive. At least it will be good for a few laughs and memories.

I have been sorting through my archives (six huge rubbermaid plastic bins) of pics and slides and found some fun climbing stuff, including Woodson and Santee Bouldering Contests. (KP, watch out, you actually wore a Halloween Costume)

Also revisited our family library and paged through the books I have on rock climbing... the few left that the kids have not "borrowed".

Found a classic book, Yosemite Climber.

Question: Mike Graham, Are you the the Mike Graham on page one in the black T-shirt on the Titanic boulder problem near camp 4?

If so, has Ian seen this picture?

Found my paisley shirt boys on several of the pages. Great Book!

Pic showing TBA.

bvb- You know I don't think I included many of Dan 'cause he was always like, "no, don't include any of me", but I'd try to sneak a few in anyway.

If the ones I put together today turn out ok I'll think about doing some of Dan. I just don't want him looking down saying, "What the heck is that woman doing?" He climbed for himself. Smiles from Lynne

Maybe someone can walk me through this. I have quite a few pictures. What do you think? Maybe put 10 or so on ST per day? I think I have about 100 pic's and they are pretty much all different and fun.

Then I have tons of slides from Suicide/T. and Y. Valley. But that will have to be next year.

I JUST ASK ONE THING TONIGHT AND TOMORROW. PLEASE SEND POSTS AND PRAYERS TO THE INAKI OCHOA FAMILY THREAD, EVEN IF YOU DID NOT KNOW HIM. LOVE EXPRESSED TO A FAMILY THAT GRIEVES IS POWERFUL. MANY OF YOU DID THIS FOR ME AND IT WAS AND STILL IS INCREDIBLY HEALING!

Lynne, let us know if U need any tech support type advice...

sometimes, for 1st time scanner/uploaders
(I don't know if you've done this 100 times or none)
there's confusion about image size, meaning the scans
often default at 300ppi, images for posing online
are 72ppi.

This utility seems ideal for Windows users
to prep pix for use on the web:
http://www.irfanview.com/
seems great, free too.

(I set mine up just for pix)

Of course if you're a pro at it I apologize in advance,
not my intent to insult anyone's expertise.

cheers and have a fine evening

Raydog, I'm pretty much a learning idiot, but

1) I have my daughter Amy

2) I do know one thing, when you load a pic onto ST you need to
keep the size down so it doesn't screw up the written post.

3) I guess I may need help, so I will scream/holler if I need
help. Is that ok?

yes, if you like,
email works too... :)
Tarbuster is very good at this,
U can scream at him :)

the main thing is:
the image file (that U upload) is 72ppi.

w/ a max width of about 700 pixels,
640 seems good.

you got a photobucket account?

it's just a few operations really,
and a lot of fun.

Sanjan, I hope you cleaned up and defraged cause the pic's are now on CD. Had them cleaned up best I could some are pretty old and they've been in the closet since at least the 1982 Bouldering Contest.

There are some great individual and group pictures. I am pretty jazzed! Tonight I'll work up the comments for the pic's. It will be a group effort tho cause there are alot of people I recognize but can't remember names or boulder routes etc. Hey, I was busy taking pictures.....and now I'm glad I did. I feel like I just won the lottery.

I may need help I can get the pic on ST but even tho you guys told me how to put the comments on I misplaced the info. So would you again be a good samaritan and either post or email. Thanks so much for you patience! lrl

No need to scan the photo of Mike Graham on the Titanic boulder problem. George Meyers posted an original color version here on supertopo in October 2006:

Don't have any of one like that Clint. These are pretty much original photos I took awhile back. Sure would like to have credit for such an awesome photo like the one you posted, but I think (hope) you'll like the ones I've got.

D. Hensel, KP, Waugh, RV, Maria, Mari, JB, J. Woodward, Nakahira, Euro's, Uh, I think there is even one of Largo. OK, I'm gonna stop cause I'm forgetting tons of names like bvb, think my brain dead brain figured out your code name. (Forgive me bvb I'm still in shell shock and missing Dan, but I did listen and put some of his photos in, thank you for the suggestion!!!)

So, it will be fun. I'm OUT of this Thread have a new one to post. Lynnie

Edit to Clint: Mr. Mike said he had just lost 25 pounds before this pic was taken soloing, ????which route????on El Cap??? due to bad weather??? OMG. But an incredible pic.

George Meyers gets credit for that fantastic photo. Titanic.

Thanks for the suggestion. I received a fair amount of mail saying to try his shoes. People really like them.

Just a note. It's 6:15 pm at the office. Amy started at 4:30 pm to "work with me" so I could do this. We almost came to blows!
I kept hearing, "MOTHER, NO please STOP!" Hard to focus and learn something new when you're being beaten by your daughter who is taller if not bigger than you.

She left at 5:30 cause her tour of duty at work was over. Don't tell her, please, but I'm doing just fine. Hehehehehe

Hats off to Lynne! this is an out-and-out revivial of ST. Thanks.

I don't think that is Jonny (the "woman in the middle"). Too short, not quite the right face.

I had a pair of those galibier shoes that I got from Todd Skinner. He was positive that the rubber was a little stickier than EBs. He might have been right, but we were using them at Vedauwoo so the stickiness didn't matter much and they got trashed so fast I never got to check them out anywhere else.

When I first discovered SuperTopo, it took me a while to figure out how to post photos. I'm not a computer ignoramus, but my plaintive cries for help usually got less than helpful three word responses, e.g. "Use Photobucket". Luckily Crimpie and I believe Curt came to the rescue, with somewhat more information. Eventually I figured it out, though my first photos were microscopic. I even got a scanner.

After being here for awhile, I noticed that newbies frequently had the same need. So I put together some paint by numbers instructions as to how to post photos, which I've updated as PhotoBucket changes its website. At least once a month I send it to someone, and usually it seems to work.

With Lynne, we seem to have hit the jackpot. Some wonderful photos. Thank you!

I suspect many here wish they'd taken a few more photos of their friends and climbs when they were young. Remembrances of things past. But there must be lots of photos out there that still need to be scanned and posted, with or without the help of geeks and photoshop.

Great photos, Lynne!

I wasn't able to open them at work, and am now home and totally blown away by this treasure.

That guy bouldering alone with his head in the crack is Powell. You can also tell by the photo of him standing next to Dan--the shorts, and the polo shirt with the weird swami with stipes on the back butt. Also KP in the 2nd photo from the top of the last page--under the Judges photo--with unknown guy bouldering.

And Russ is correct I think. Pretty sure that's John Bachar. I've seen photos of Mikey Waugh from those days...and I don't think that's Mike--his legs aren't that long. Everything about it says JB...unless John had a twin out there. :-)

You've done a great job posting these, Lynne. Thanks so much for taking the time. You're really great.

Yes, I concur with Graham on the Waugh ID.

Waugh w/ hat:

Waugh in initial photo (enhanced) also w/ hat:
(plus, the sighnature Waugh beak...haha)

And the clincher, note the flaw at the bottom of the chalk bag,
...a small tuck in the fabric were the bottom is sewn on:

Bachar, at that time would have had one of two chalk bags:
One expertly crafted by Mari or perhaps an early ballistics model made in Graham's shop.
NEITHER craftspersons would produce such tripe.
(Waugh made his own bags, maybe at Wilderness Experience)

We, (Ian Carter, Mike Brown, myself) taught Daryl Nakahira how to climb;....he was a tag-along, and he struggled with the 5.8s forever.....that is....until he started to climb with Dan and Co.......then he got good;...REAL good....we were psyched for him to be such a rad climber....but he got too good and wouldn't climb with us "weakling" climbers......he (and Dan) got real real strong......we still climbed our asses off, but we lifted the beer and the bong instead of weights.......and we stuck at 5.10+ FOREVER.....doomed to push the 5.10 stone up the steep incline forever, while the cool tasty grapes of the 5.11 were just out of reach;....sure we climbed 5.11's....alot of them....but we were always desperate on them, and never 100% confident or solid at the grade.....(36 years later......still stuck.....RATS!)...the pics are cool.....keep them coming;.....the dutchboy hair cut of KP is awesome.....Lynne....I'm almost done with school, then I have a week of Math "inservice" traing $750.00 extra ) then a 5 day trip to the Needles, THEN I'll be read to go to Idyllwild or Big Bear to climb with you anyday........end of the month.....so let's plan, OK?......maybe a day at suicide and a day at Tahquitz?.....

Mike, you know by now I love the threads (as in clothes). All the guys did wear the same stuff back then. Reason is why you are in business.

The climbers bought what they could find that was reasonably comfortable and there was very little out there. Few sports clothing company's that climbers could use.

I know, cause Dan refused to shop. I bought most all his threads and shoes. He made a plaster cast of his foot and covered it with some plastic goo that dried as imitation skin. I got to take this to Nordstroms to buy his dress shoes.

He was a gun shop Cabelas man.

Tarbuster,

First I'm making an appt. to take smart lessons from you. Why didn't I think of this?

Soooooooo I don't think JB (if you mean J Bachar will be a problem, I think he likes his own legs).

Now Russ, hmmmm, ya, you are right. We need to be very careful. Note: the Joanne Woodward comments. Yes, Russ IS dangerous.

So, one lesson to be learned here. When you take a pic. of a human climbing make sure to include the chalk bag! Gottcha!

More detail on the chalk bag.

Waugh:

And a Mari chalk bag from that era, worn by Bachar, from a Bullwinkle photo.
Note the "hinge" afforded by the midships stripe of lighter fabric:
(and the later ballistics model, made perhaps by Bachar himself in Graham's shop, had no hinge)

-The key here is the lap felled seam at the hinge fabric, which Waugh's bags ---did not have

I have to know this stuff, I had one of those Waugh chalk bags myself:

Gotta tell you a quick story about D. Nakahira.

Darryl, Dan, I and our 4 kids were out at Josh at the More Monkey than Funky problem. Darryl was just about ready to top out when he came off (with no pro, no huge cushioned landing pad, or even a towel).

He landed on his feet and literally blew up his tennis shoe. Powder from the shoe was there on the ground and the collapsed shoe just laying there, half of it just gone.

Our kids still talk about it. DN was a super person and really helped with our kids so I could enjoy life too.

wow, what amazing photos. lynn, don't know if anyone has ID'd the area yet, but most of these photos were taken at the magnolia boulders. this crack:

was the 20-point problem that nobody did during the first magnolia bouldering contest in '78 or '79. i remember watching bachar try it. lynn, is it possible this pics are from two different contests?

i know the first comp was late '70's 'cause guy andrews was there, and the next weekend everyone went up to do the north face of san jacinto and gunther fell, like, 2000 feet.

but, the t-shirt says '82. so i'm confused. i know for sure the pic of bachar is from spring '78 or '79.

in any event -- my god, what a great set of period piece photos, they so, so capture that time. i got a little misty looking at them, thanks so much and can we have some more?

EDIT: yeah, it was the '78 GWBC when those pics were taken. here's the same crack from a different angle:

Hey Lynne. Sometimes perfection, or at least being close to it is important. My dad was an engineer building rockets at one point in his career. Big ones. Those things needed to be pert near perfect in order for them to work. But that need for perfection carried over into his day to day life and sometimes that kept him from really enjoying living.

These photos don't need to be perfect. It is the memories they invoke that are important. Plus some of us weren't there, so when you share them we get to peak into a place we didn't get to visit and see some of the people we admire. So it is the sharing that is important.

Thanks for doing that.

That was my first multi pitch climb, Dome Rock on the way to the Needles. And this was the man responsible for my success, Mr. Ed Sampson.

He followed me on the climb and when we both were at the end of the first pitch, I was freaked staring at this bolt having my famous bolt conversation.

I offered to buy Ed a brand new rope if he would help me rap down. He just laughed and said you'll be happy when you top out.

Can you tell by my smile, I WAS!

OMG, now we need an RV look alike contest. This is the "real" RV. Who is the imposter?

I am so laughing, I think I'm on drugs and I don't even take drugs. The other RV up above is also RV, I must have contests mixed up or am I hallucinating. I'm slipppppping off into the abyss. Someone throw me a rope. And I'm still at work, I think I better go quietly. See you later. Lynne

the line length will be the size of the "box" which is set by the minimum of the widest picture or your browser window size... you have a wide picture up thread (notice on this window the print is back to the default size, which is the width of your browser window)...

Don't know if anyone saw it, but I think the climb in question above is Church Bowl Tree... (one of the two pictures you posted of it is the wide one).

Lynn, that shot of Ed Sampson is actually his brother, Roger, I believe. Ed is (was) much more blond. Ed is reppin and now lives in Colorado. They used to climb there together a bit(edit:dome rock, needles)--took me there once in '78 or '79 I think. Bruce (Adams)

With Randy in the pic below Randy and Mari: That is Bruce Pottenger, the guy who made all the tshirts everyone is wearing. AKA, Kinnaloa, AKA MoMo

In the pic below that, the blondish dude in white pant might be Terry Ayres, AKA the Lima Bean or Junior.... he was probably 12 years old then, but it might be him. He posts here sometimes as "Junior". The two guys behind the Lima Bean look real familiar, but I don't know their names.

In the bottom photo of Randy, the blurry guy with the pony tail and red jumper is Greg Epperson.

Bruno edit: no way man... that is Eddie Moe for sure. There are a ton of those Moes, including eddie Moe, Larry Moe, Roger Moe, a sister or two Moes, and some mystery brother Moe... Eddie Moe still dyes his hair blond though. Probably the pic was taken on a heavy roots day.

Ron, good work!

Usually it helps if you post the URL for the photo on a separate line - that is, a paragraph or line of text above or below the photo, to tell us what's in the photo, then the photo.

Then the text and photos all line up with the left margin, and are a bit easier to look at.

right, me too.
here's a great scanner 4 everything - Canon = bomber, IMO.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16838111012

the thing about images for display on the computer screen
(uploaded for the web)
is that the specs for the size (in pixels)

is calibrated at 72ppi (pixels per inch)

remember 72ppi, that's key.

also,
this is made 4 what you're doing:

I set mine to just image viewing during the install,
really good 4 editing pics to be uploaded.
Simple, stable user friendly app, low system

Sorry, I briefly channeled some geek speak.

URL means (I think) something like "Universal Resource Locator". It's the unique internet address for a website or a photo. A combination of symbols, letters and numbers. When you put a URL in a SuperTopo post, the ST computer automatically knows to go to that "address" and get whatever is there.

A typical URL for a photo on ST usually starts and finishes with [img]. That identifies the thing that's being found as an image. I can't post a full URL for a photo for you, as then all you'd see is the photo.

The URL for SuperTopo is http://www.supertopo.com

The URL for this thread, within SuperTopo, is http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=603398 Kind of a sub-address. Just like a URL for a photo is a sub-address within another website.

since we're taking a little stroll down memory lane, and adding provenance to these pics as we go, here's some deep background on this little gem:

this brutal little crimpfest, on the backside of the ampitheater at "old" santee, was fired first try by kevin powell on his first trip to santee in 1977. me and watusi were giving him the tour and he just hiked all the established probs, then casually added a few new ones that were harder than pretty much everything there. he didn't even bother naming this one. back in the late 70's is was known simply as "the powell crimp." despite dozens of attempts spead over several years, i wasn't able to do it until fires came out.

I'm wondering if that is the late great Shawn Curtis with the red hair RIGHT under John. Father Guido Sarducci,(black hat) who was that, contest must have been around Halloween, if I remember contestants were dressed up in costumes. I've told the story before, but Santee had just burned and me and Howard King show up early that morning and Yabo is sleeping on the ground amongst all the ash. We wake him and he is FULL of black ash, he gets up and behold he is ready to boulder(after massive loads). That shot of Yabo Ape Factor is taken within minutes of him waking, he dusted off a bit and went to work on the problems.
Peace
ps BVB how are you doing these days? We missed you at the Josh thingamajig and I've been wondering how things are for you these days. You've tackled a HUGE hurdle boy, keep it up, we wish you the best and stay on track!

Oh, you guys are just the greatest! Talking together, helping each other....my my I am so impressed!

Suddenly I am energized again from you wonderful ST's.

Say, R. I am just down the freeway...I could drop by for 5 min. and show you how it works. Plus...I do not think you are using a "POST" for each picture, cause your pics all run together with no room for you to comment. For each pic you need to punch the post button on ST.

When you hit the IMG and that crazy script goes on the ST Post, hit enter and you can write whatever comments you want.

Then go back to photo bucket and pick another picture, go through the same process and go to ST and Post and do it again. You need to separately POST each picture so they don't run together.

You did fantastic without an "Amy". I love your pic's. Being a leg woman the Bachar legs are tied with Yannick Noah's .

Not actually true Lynne.... after each set of IMG tags, just hit return and then you can put in a caption or whatever, and then hit return again and pop in another URL between the IMG tags.

Some posts will have dozens of pictures with captions and lies after each one with easy to read spacing.

keep trying it out.... great stuff so far. That one of me with the Lord Fauntleroy haircut might need to go though.

I've been chased up onto a mussel bed by a Tiger Shark while spear fishing... I've chummed the seas on many a deep sea fishing trip, and I've hit the winter swells, at night, during storm season... but no.... I really don't like the water all that much.

I've never fly fished for Salmon in Alaska..... but I have noodled Salmon in Alaska, including the State Record catch, have rendered down an entire whale for lamp oil, all while doing missionary work with the Inuits on a 9 year stint.

(for the record, noodling is when you use only your hands to catch fish, by gently stroking them on the belly under the bank of a river, or my letting them engulf your entire arm, and then whipping them on to the shore drydock style. Most hicks do this with catfish..... but I have taken the art North to Alaska)

Do you mean tickling? As in tickling trout?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trout_tickling

A fine and ancient art, that can also be used on other fish. Not that I've ever tried it. Though I used to trout fish. But the name, and idea, tickled my fancy. :-)

Edit: The wikipedia article refers to noodling as a regional variant of tickling, for catfish rather than trout.

FORGOT to SAY...WHEN I READ your whale rendering ..Missionary post I really about died laughing. Son visiting from Belgium made me read the whole thing to find out why I was dying laughing.!!!!

Then we were both rolling on the floor.

Prefer to think the huge blank space was for a picture that didn't make it. Not accepting the L word. Noodling, is that a "real" word and definition or is that "fish" talk.

To clean up my act also, I didn't live with them, just spent a couple of days there.

I did catch a yummy salmon. Truth, I did not thread my hook. Truth, I did pull it in myself.

Truth, the walrus are thousands of pounds of SMELLY lard, but incredibly graceful in the H2O.............and now we are back to Nemo again.

I'm thinking that the tubesock thing started with Jim Collins in Boulder. In 1978 he worked Genesis (really early 5.12+) relentlessly and was regularly featured in Climbing wearing tube socks.

You can just see them here:

nah, it wasn't just ericson with those lame socks, everybody wore tube socks back then 'cause that's what was available. check out any photos of dudes in shorts in the 70's, they're all wearing f*#king tube socks, they were as ubiquitous as corduroy pants and wallabes, i maen i'm pretty sure largo was wearing tubes socks in some of the photos form "pumping sandstone" and "pumping granite."

oh, the horror.

Yeah Bob's got it, it was what everyone wore back then. Look at the shots I posted, everyone had them. No one wears socks with climbing shoes now, back then you HAD to, try on a pair of EB's or any shoe from that era, hard, stiff and tight. When I got my first pair of Fires I switched to no socks and the smell factor went out the roof. Anyone still got tubers? Maybe we should start wearing sani's from baseball. Ya know the socks worn under yer stirrups. Those come in all the wild colors too. When I can get a scanner I'll put up this shot of a guy I used to climb with named Kirin(sp) he wore these funky "socks" from like ballet, these suckers went up to his knees. Looking through some old slides yesterday I came across it....as well as some other classics. Found the Rakers hat rack shot, some great Largo shots belaying one handed, Badyrka with long hair and tube socks, Randy and Maria handing out donuts at the bouldering contest. I NEED a slide scanner!
A great thread Lynnie....again a BIG thanks for starting it.

Tube socks were the '70s and early 1980's lycra. They were bound to go higher and higher until you just wore them as pants.

Great shots and what a trip down memory lane, thanks. Too bad I missed Woodson and SoCal from mid 1980 to 1984. I missed some good contests. My first was Magnolia Boulders in 1979. Although as a result I did see Mt. St. Helens blow from the Columbia Gorge after a day of climbing on Beacon Rock, on May 18th, 1980.

Something about the '70s and '80s that I miss dearly --- the innocence and we were all fringe back then. Now climbing is soooo mainstream. There are benefits for sure now, but those times were truly magical and unforgetable.

Someone (maybe all of us) needs to think about another Woodson Shin-dig for the early spring of 2009. The ST 2007 Woodson Shin-dig was a blast.

Lynne, how cool to go back in time and remember the old "glory" days-"shoe dopping", the sibling rivalries (yes we were all just and still are big kids), sand bag ratings and wrong beta just for fun. Hensel and I were at Suicide recently (last Friday) and between our two fading memories were able to figure out that we had first climbed there together almost exactly 33 years ago to the day. New Generations and Rebolting Developement were the highlights of the day. There is a vague rumour (not started by me) that there may be another Rubidoux Comp in the near future-of course there would have to be strict rules surrounding what shoes could be used i.e tennis shoes only modified with modern climbing rubber and of course the old sand bag ratings would have to be reworked to inflict even more humbling of the "new gaurd".
