Desperately seeking gut wrenching laughs! Worn out from TIG's God's Dice.

Jake Bro, love your report from the Lodge Cafe!

My fantasy job....a part time waitress at "Jake's Cafe" at the Lodge in Yosemite. (renamed it for you happening reporter dude.) And during the down time taking those new mint green mythos on a few climbs.

So what fantasy job would you give up your day job for?

No Peace tonight, just Laughs!

Alaskan weather + small aircraft makes the bush pilot gig a veddy dangerous gig.

If I could find the right location for a remote lodge, run a B&B, and have access to climbing, that would be the dream gig. Somebody else can spend their time flying the plane in the good weather, I want to enjoy that good weather on the ground!

Yes, Lynne I actually have flown into the "bush" it is awesome!!! Have my pilot's cert. but it isn't current, my former airplane is owned by my ex....argh!!!!

so if I could wind back the hands of time, damn it, I would be a full time pilot!!!!!

So now we have the Karen and Paul team. It would be amazing what a little (or lot) of the kind of dreams and bravado we could all realize if we had the (Here's an unadulterated, outright pulg for the book club)Greg Mortenson take on life.

The main character in Pattern Recognition by William Gibson worked a freelance gig that sounded sweet. She would get hired by a company to give a go/no go on their logo design. She got paid no matter what and didn't have to justify her response in any way.

of course I know then and yes I know of the woodson contests
but, did not make the first one, I think.

mimi?

you said you saw me at one?

I can't remember which one but found the day extremely stimulating

I LOVE Woodson

Haven't seen Grizzly man, and won't. I guess the gentlest way to express my feelings towards Mr. Treadwell was that he was an idiot harassing wildlife, not a bear expert.

I've been fortunate to see a fair bit of the state, albeit mostly from the road system, and some of it via water.

Actually I have thought about a fishing charter as a dream job, but with basically a 4 month season, high operating costs, weather et al, there just isn't the money in it for what it takes.

I'll never tire of the scenery!

Ray, it was the 1986 Woodson Bouldering Contest. A really good one with a ton of melodrama. Height of the lycra age, battling between the doggers and the dognots. Highpitched whining at it's finest. Verm took a pic of me that made the mag. My nanosecond of fame. LOL!

We were in line for the same prob at one point. I was sandbagged again. Great place to boulder! What a great town too. I was lucky at the post-raffle and won one of your FROG fanny packs covered with painted kisses. Still have it.

Paul those are terrific pics. I was fortunate enough to spend one perfect day in a kayak out in the middle of absolute nowhere. It was called Golden Spur I think. The lake was so still the snow covered mountains were reflected in the water and it was an experience that defied words. The lake reflected the mountains until you thought you were kayaking on the peaks. Sun out all day, unusual for there, Bald Eagle looking down at us as we ate lunch and threw out our fly rods. Gold mining on the Yuba River is very popular in summer. Many people have claims in the town of Washington and all along the feeder streams of the Yuba.

In the pre environmental days the water canons blasted away the mountains in the Omega and Alpha diggings amoung many more to search for gold. There are many abandoned shafts you can buy the rights to.

That said I am sure the gold mining will be in full swing this year. My daughter found a nuggett there a few years back.

John,

I looked into gold mining as a hobby when we moved up here, and got about every book on the subject I could find.

What I figured out was, if you were on good but not great productive ground, using low production manual means, you'd average out about $10/hr. Gold has gone up in price since then, but by and large you'd have to be pretty good to average $20/hr.

You have to move alot of gravel to get to the point that you clarify it down to the good stuff. And while I love being outdoors, I just couldn't see shoveling gravel 8hrs a day and then spending another hour cleaning up. If you're not moving gravel, you're not making money. If you invest into the equipment and claims to move more gravel, then you could make more $, but more risks and lots of opperating costs, not to mention evironmental reports etc etc.

Some guys seem to do pretty good metal detecting, and you aren' shoveling gravel hour after hour. But, those guys cover alot of ground for the nuggets they get.

Lynne, I've taken a break from the Taco for the last month or so, but I see you've been quite active, here, during that period. I like the spirit of the posts of yours I've read, including this one. Let me just say I'm happy you've come on board this ship of fools. It really is a fun place. I've even developed a long-distance affection for Mr. Fat, the LEBerator and TIGger, as well as others I probably wouldn't choose to hang with. My life is richer for the interaction with them, and my mind has even been cracked open in some unexpected ways.

As to your post about fantasy jobs, I've always tried to live my fantasies, and for the most part it's worked pretty well. Haven't made a ton of money, but always managed to support myself through climbing and climbing-related activities. That's all I've ever really dreamed about.

You're getting back into climbing. Do your fantasies revolve around integrating work into a climbing lifestyle? If so, there may be ways to make them come true. Climbing can be like the hub of a wheel, with spokes of interest radiating in all directions. Here's a toast to whatever new path(s) you choose to roll down.

Of course I don't really know anyone except by their tags so I have accidentally used boy pronouns for girls etc., but oh well.

I sure agree about the mind and richer life, I have always enjoyed getting to know people and their thoughts and ideas!

So far I've lived a great life. But I sense it is time for a somewhat dramatic change. Don't know if I can climb as obviously I am older now, however I have always stayed somewhat in shape, I've been working out and dropped about 12 pounds so I don't have so much to pull up the rock. (Did you see the "If I had known I was going to live this long" Thread?) Well I was serious.

In the past it was my brain that kept me from climbing alot, four letter word called fear, but I am alot stronger mentally now and no longer have 4 small children. So we'll see. I have always really enjoyed climbers and their lifestyle. Life should be an adventure. Did you know a rut is a coffin with no ends, and too many people are in one?

If you have any ideas let me know. Thanks! Lynne

PS Since I will be climbing with daughter Amy I know if I falter she'll kick my butt up the rock just like her Father did. She is her Father's daughter!

Some of you on a couple of my threads have asked if Acopa has a shoe similar to the La Sportiva Mythos. I did a little research (and of course some of you will disagree, so please don't blast me out of the water. It's too early in the day.) and found they make a shoe called the Aztec that is supposed to fit well, is precise with really nice leather, toe point, comfort and less expensive.

So, I have an idea. Since I am just starting up climbing again I'm gonna get a pair of both and conduct a real live test. It may be a bit but I'll let you know what happens.

KAREN, are you still out there? If anyone knows Karen tell her I'm looking for her and her Grandmother's Psychedelic Fabric.

Raydog is now working at Ripstop Repair and he says they will have a chalkbag design soon.

Karen, where is that fabric? Calling Karen.

Being a raft guide is great. You get to work outdoors, if the clients are dicks you can flip and watch'em swim. Its easier than it looks, if you can point a boat and yell at people your qualified.

Todd, you made my day! What a great pic. We did have fun at Woodsen and the big party was a blast!

Amy and I are toying with the idea of climbing in Josh next Saturday, May 23. Are you available or is it a kid day? We would drive there after work on Friday and probably stay at the J. Tree Inn. Then get up early to climb. Have to be back in town on Sunday early for a big family gathering.

I got my shoes, harness and chalk bag and I may get a rope this weekend. We probably won't go if you're not available cause we need to start with someone that knows what the heck they're doing and that ain't us. Chow Baby. lrl

Took me forever to come up with this, and it is a fantasy job, no doubt. A semi-juvenile fantasy job at that.

Professional breast examiner and wine taster... or is it breast taster and wine examiner?

Not sure about the qualifications, except that you probably need to have seen a lot of breasts and drank a lot of wine.

IT could be dicey though, if you got confused. I can see the review now:

"This 1971 breast still has a perky insouciance, evoking memories of fresh cut grass, violets, and ripe strawberries, with a full body and showing a perfect age. Appears to be in perfect balance for long life. Enjoy now til 2020."

Hey Kahnom, I never thought I'd see this thread again! But I was thinking about it just this morning.

I too am looking to reinvent my life, SOON. My target date is September 1st. I want to include the outdoors and a certain amount of adventure, writing and I'm not sure what else.

I too was a journalist once. I worked for a small newspaper and got to also take many of their photos. Got paid by the column inch, so big pictures were good for the pocket book.

Look for Jellos post in this thread. It really encouraged me to go for my fantasy, which I am. I may not start where I want to end up (does that make sense?) What I'm trying to say is even if I have to start out as a waitress in Yosemite I will start somewhere and see what opens up. For sure if I sit in this office it probably won't come to me.

I say, if you can go for your Dream. Life is short. Peace and Joy, Lynnie

Miss Lynne says....." What I'm trying to say is even if I have to start out as a waitress in Yosemite I will start somewhere"

Lynne, Waitress is a coveted job in Yosemite, you have to work a fair amount in other jobs first.......union..... Like I have said before..better yet..a seasonal job in Tuolumne or TPR.

oops gotta go.. Hope you have a Sweet Holiday weekend. n.t.

edit for Lynne, Not all Yosemite jobs are hard to get.

I can't say what the ideal fantasy job is, but I think more important is how we live our lives. My dad had his own company and worked hard 60-70 hour weeks for 30+ years. It was a successful company and allowed for a great lifestyle growing up. Through some downturns in the economy and technological changes he ended up nearly walking away from what he built over those decades, retired at 72, and passed away last spring a few weeks after his 80th birthday. I don't think he had many regrets.

That said, I wished I'd had the oportunity to spend more time with him when I was growing up. I definately realized that working your butt off putting all dreams asside until you retire wasn't the way to go. Most folks are too old and tired to chase their dreams at retirement, and fortunes wax and wane.

That has formed my world view which has been to work as little as possible and spend as much time as possible with my family. Somehow I seem to have gotten into the rat race trap of two many financial obligations and the ability to be compensated fairly well for my time.

My wife and I have been debating selling everything, buying a sailboat w/ cash and living on it for a few years, or longer. But then we think, we want the kids to have a good education to set them up for college, which brings us back to where we are.

I've half heartedly looked into some work overseas that with the right company would pretty much pay all our expenses and after 2-3 years we'd had a wad of $ tax free. The other option is working in the AK oil fields 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, and acruing enough vacation to take a 2 week work hitch off every other year which would allow a 6 week vacation. The money is good, but being away from family for 2 week hitches is tough.

Can't believe I've been at the same job for almost 9 years, every other job has bit over 2 years. I simply haven't found anything better, and by and large I work with some decent people, and most importantly get along with my boss.

That sailboat is sure sounding good!

Tolman, Food for thought. My husband put himself through USC Pharmacy school and we had our 4 children during that time. I felt strongly about staying home with the children, so Dan converted an old barn into a green house, we grew plants and I gave plant parties at night while he watched the kids and did homework. We had one car so Dan could go to school and I walked everywhere with the kids. Those were some of the happiest, simplest years of our lives.

So when it was time for our 4 to go to college, we said go for it. All four put themselves through college and are very proud of it. It helped make them the incredible adults they are now. lrl

Good bump, MH. A teammate on my high school track team had a real summer job of fishing in the Sierra, and recording what he caught. I've decided my true fanatasy job would be as a professor of climbing history at Berkeley. That would, of course, require extensive field investigation, and would keep me close to Indian and Mortar Rocks.

gettin' mine in about 3 days: sweet heart of early retirement incentive; son's college expenses are lookin' good (how did he go from 2 months to 19 years during the time I ran to the bathroom...note: young parents....do start that college fund if you haven't already) Now off to Yosemite and the East Side during mid week; climbing gym and yoga classes when it's virtually empty; sailing for many months at a time instead of six weeks; mid week skiing. Down side: the years to keep up this pace aren't stretched out like a long lazy summer...but hey, what's that new mantra: "50 is the new 30"?

Anders, aka Mighty Hiker, was such the Dude to find this Thread I posted long ago and resuscitate it for me. (I couldn't figure out how to find it and wasted over an hour looking.)

I packed today for my Fantasy Job. Leave tomorrow. Know this may not be everyone's fantasy job, but I sure want to give it a go. Hear it's even better than my original Yo Valley Fantasy......

Tomorrow eary I head out for Tioga Pass Resort. Taking a bit of a chance, they may not need me. But I've found life adventure is just keep heading in the direction of your goals and dreams, one step at a time.

I'm Way jazzed. So even if it doesn't work out at least I tried. Dudettes and Dudes, don't "settle" go for Your Dreams. Keep the positive thoughts and prayers going for lynnie gal. CHEERS !

And THANKS again Anders. You are just an amazing human. I asked for help less than an hour ago and you pulled it off. :DDD
