Congrats for being open to receiving a forest instead of a nursery...and for having such a great husband to deal with the gift accordingly.

Many happy returns of the day Lois- there must be few things more satisfying than planting trees on your birthday- get as many of them in as you can
are they all apple?- what variety, what spacing?
you say you've got some conifers on order- what species?
are there many critters about that may munch them?
are you putting collars on them?
i've done some tree planting in england, where we covered the base of the saplings with newspapers followed by hessian sacks to prevent competition from the 'weeds'

Hope you had a wonderful day!
I recently started seeing a nice gal who lives on 60 acres, off the grid but with satellite internet access, gotta love it. Anyhow, helping her out in her large garden, including planting some trees, I am now newly enthralled with the joys of working in the dirt and helping things grow, and can now appreciate those joys that you share with us.
May you and your garden thrive!

Check state law.
You may probably shoot all the deer you deem necessary to protect your crops.
I know a guy (NJ) who shot more than his family and friends could eat each year. He used a backhoe to bury the excess.
(Don't shoot any of the black and white deer.)

Hey LEB, have a Super New Start to another trek around this grand sphere. Happy, Happy, Birthday !!! Lynne
PS, remember last year when Dirt in Eye and L did a Thread on us.....that was pretty scary....but you survived and I guess I did too. So latest is just a kink in the rope.....not a knot or anything that would keep the climb (of life) from goin' on up the Rock, Gal. Peace, LrL

Well that last pic didn't come up for me and frankly I'm glad. I laugh my azz off at most of locker's stuff but . . .
Just love the irony when I read ST posters blasting people like Michael Savage (or whomever) for being hateful or how hateful rhetoric never solves problmes, calling people horrible names, etc.
Just got back from climbing (Something most of the posters should be doing) and saw this.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LEB has finally found her true calling. I warned her that she was spending too much time here on the ST. She agreed. And now it's played out.
She's on the front lines and not climbing. So what. Someday, one of us will drag her fat ass up one of those classic Eastern crags and settle this score once and for all.
And all for one! Gulp!!!!!1111111

This is why I like Cowpoke's Thread.....people there are posting mellow, thoughtful ideas and information.
Which leads me to ask, what the heck good does it do to drive out a person such as LEB ?
Reminds me of high school. If some did not like a person they pretty much wasted them. Why not try and find a common denominator. You can learn much from people you disagree with. If yo think you got it all bagged....well....you are. :}

LEB may not exactly qualify as my alter ego but after very recently losing a very dear sister-in-law, sharing in the loss of Woody, my old friend Stimson Bullitt, two business acquaintenances (via murder), and the imminent loss of a very dear canine, I'm having a very hard time working up any amount of animosity towards anyone.
Happy birthday LEB

"Believe me, no one “drove” her anywhere..... What she told me is that she got tired of all the negativity here as it was directed at her and tired of people attributing all sorts of weird motives to her posting on ST."
Ummmm.....isn't negativity directed at someone pretty much the same thing as driving that person away? I find it quite odd that someone would try to attribute her (temporary?) cessation of posting to some sort of noble motive. The % of people she was driving batty grew after some idiotic statements she made in a time of great stress in other people's lives, and with less support and more vitriol headed her way, things were not as fun around the campfire anymore, so off she went.
I hope LEB is having a good day, and if it is her birthday, that it is a happy one. Her behavior around here was really weird on a consistent basis - most of us are weird on occasion (I certainly have been), but on this forum she was just out in left field all the time.
My own enjoyment of the SuperTalko is enhanced by the (temporary?) cessation of her pollution posting.....but that has not changed my ratio of "enjoyment to dollar spent", if you get what I am saying.
And one way or the other, she had one of the most profound impacts on the forum, no? Even when Russ was gone for a while, I don't think he got mentioned this much.

Perhaps there is something to be learned here.
1. An open forum is open to a person as long as they feel it is time well spent. This is normal.
2. If Lois was disruptive it was because we reacted to her well past the point where it was clear there was little commonality.
That was kind of odd.
3. Had she typed less and composed more carefully her effect might have been larger.
This is speculative but normal.
4. She is a fighter.
This is desirable.
5. She had the ability to come back courteous and smiling no matter what.
This is highly desirable. Actually rather rare.
6. You seldom could change her take on things.
Entirely normal.
That's about it. The one question remaining is why did we react to her as we did? Odd it seems to me.
Perhaps we can do better.

A community tends to shun those it perceives as different.

I would think that this community would be different.
This would be desirable
