Our first location choice was on the lawn at Chautauqua Park; but it is closed for renovation.
We've decided to have this little gathering, a picnic with Crimpie, on Flagstaff Mountain.

This Sunday, May 4.
CATHEDRAL PARK/LOST GULCH OVERLOOK.
Let's try to meet between three and four o'clock.
Just bring any kind of picnic food, there are no barbecues.
Regulations dictate: no glass bottles are allowed and only 3.2% alcoholic beverages are allowed.

*If you don't have a Boulder County license plate, you need to pay $3 per car, at the self-service kiosk which you can see within the first mile on the right. If you miss this, there is also a kiosk at the Lost Gulch Overlook. ($25 fine) *

If the tri-table at Cathedral Park is vacant we will be there; this is right off the road yet has a secluded feel and can easily seat 12 people:

If Cathedral Park is taken, our second choice will be at one of the tables at the Lost Gulch Overlook.
Either way, we'll want to spend some time at the Overlook:
(These two areas are only a 10th of a mile apart).

To reach Flagstaff Mountain, from Denver, take the Boulder Turnpike, Hwy. 36, into Boulder and exit at Baseline. At the bottom of the ramp turn left or west on Baseline and follow that uphill all the way into and up Flagstaff Mountain.

If you zero out your odometer at the first right hand turn at the bottom of Flagstaff, just at Gregory Canyon, the lost Gulch Overlook is 3.8 miles up the twisty road. Cathedral Park is 3.9 miles. (If you use the mile markers, both spots are between the fourth and fifth mile marker.)

The Flagstaff summit/amphitheater turnoff is 2.8 miles up. From there, keep an eye out for Lost Gulch on the right, and just after that on the right is Cathedral Park. --Very twisty all the way up.

What Euroford said, only our flight to Seattle is a bit earlier than his to Chicago.

We were planning to spend Wed-to-Sun in Vedauwoo but with a forecast of snow and wind and cold temps pretty much from Laramie to Santa Fe, we're going to bail east for Grand Junction. Flying out of Denver early Sunday evening, but already have a commitment for the afternoon.

Next time.

Per Taco Bill's pre-picnic tip wrecking appetizer idea:

I'm getting a bouldering junket together up the hill at the Blarney Stones.
This is accessed from the tippity top of Flagstaff, and is a ways down the hill on the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail, maybe.
(You can see that trailhead on the first map, up-thread)
So far it's just me, and I'll be there at the trailhead, 9 a.m. ready to hike in.
Anybody interested?

Roy,

I will be there. How could I refuse, when personally invited by the Mayor of ST, himself?

I can’t make the early bouldering session at Green Mountain, but if anyone wants to meet around 1:30, I would be happy to lead an informative tour of the historic Flagstaff boulders. I can personally demonstrate several of the V0s and will helpfully point out the holds on anything harder.

Included on the tour will be several of Oli’s classic first ascents, including the Red Wall and the high ball King Conquerer Crack. The tips-punishing Smith Overhang, various Pratt routes including the Overhang and the Mantle, the Gill Swing, and the amazing Double Clutch will be some of the highlights. Old folks should bring shoes and a chalk bag. And you youngsters, don’t forget your pads.

Meet at the spot marked Monkeys Wall on Roy’s map. After you start up the hill and go past the Flagstaff house restaurant and the parking areas around it, it’s the first big parking lot on the left. It has a newly installed outhouse and paved space for 7-8 cars. If you can’t find a place, go 20 yards farther up the road and there is usually room for another 10-12 cars on the right hand dirt pullout. Walk south about 20 yards and meet near the long, chalked up wall, the Monkey Traverse.

See you there.

The Blarney stones are well worth the hike out and have a more secluded feel compared to the zoo of Flagstaff.
There are some raptor closures currently in effect but it does not effect these boulders.

I made it! Got in an hour before I thought I would even with the most epic driving weather I've ever faced. Tornados tearing up Kansas City. Following what was posted last night, we got hit by BAD stuff ant 1:40am. Scary sheit.

The drive over was wacky - 60 mph crosswinds, tumble weed pummeling, ground blizzard and sleet almost the ENTIRE WAY. Brutal. But all was worth it. I'm here, have consumed an adult beverage (or two. or three) and am happy in my new home with Dave. :)

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday. I'd ride my brand spanking new road bike, but I think that hill might kill me. :)

Crimpstar consider hiking the trail in as cycling will have you feeling the altitude so much more.
The stormy weather on the way in was just Colorado's way of helping you blow all the BS back to SL.

Remember to buy booze on Saturday. Colorado may have snow potential 12 months a year but no booze sales on Sunday.

Boulder Mountain Parks and Boulder City Parks and Rec, or what ever it might be, is pretty heavily regulated.
Although I have not reviewed them in detail, I'm not sure a barbecue would go over so well per the regulations (seriously).

If we are really discrete, we might get away with some of Eyonkee's hacky sack though...

Ha ha,
All new bolted routes in the Flatirons are subject to review by committee.
There will be no on sight ground up first ascents, and definitely no natural run outs.
All bolted climbs must be top-down and grid bolted so they are absolutely safe for a leader of the grade.

I say we stick to golf.

Start packing that cooler or at least begin thinking about it...

Ricky and I just confirmed the 1:30 meeting at Monkey Traverse; so far it's Taco Bill, Rick and myself.

As to the morning bouldering at the Balarney stones on the backside of Green Mountain:
I haven't seen any interest so I'm reverting to my 10 o'clock start time;
A 10 a.m. start will allow things to warm up and taking into account the approach and return, this will leave a couple hours for bouldering back there.
I've made some phone calls to try to hook in some interested parties so we'll see how it goes.

We'll see the rest of you between 3 and 4 o'clock...

It's a look I won't repeat...

Okay,
Now that I have your attention,
The site of the day's big event (and not a bunch of pictures of Tarbuster)...

But look at these first:

Sweet.

Except that our buddy, Taco Bill, for no apparent reason other than something like a freak wind burst,
Came rocketing out of the top of this problem, popped straight off his finishing stance, standing a full 3 feet above my hat in that last picture.

Remember in the James Bond films, when a guy got shot out of the ejection seat?
Pretty much like that; except Ricky engaged the superlative spot -- no doubt adding crucial check power to the tremendous luck of our day.

So here's what you do:
If you see Taco Bill on the street, give him a great big hug.
Because we figure it's about 10% you come off that thing unscathed, which he did!

Great big giant hug for Taco Bill a.k.a. Adam.

Hey, did you see Dave in this month's issue of Climbing? He is "Unknown Climber" on the Naked Edge. You can tell it's him by his hair and because, well, it's the Naked Edge.

Steve, they could live to be 80 or more. Or die at anytime if they get ill. My oldest, Henri, is 30. I've had him his whole life. He is the other birds' father. His mate, Lilac, died about 7 years ago two weeks after Pickle (adopted in Arkansas) hatched. She showed no signs of illness and just dropped dead in a second. It was very sad. How is that for an answer: between 1 and 90 years. :)

So I'm adding a couple of photos to Crimpie and Dave's welcome to Boulder (of course, Dave already lived there. . . )

Here are the perps

No Sir Matt,
I made that jacket myself, for myself.
'Handy with a needle and thread don't you know.

... and you probably missed my nighttime winter solo ski cross-dresser thread then?
Jello approved.
'Wish I could find that ditty, buried as it is somewhere deep in the Supertopo newspaper stack.

Roy and Dave came straight to the party from New York Fashion Week where they presented the stunning Tarbuster collection of brightly-colored jackets and outdoor gear.

Word is that Jay, former winner of Project Runway, was blown away by the collection and actually asked Roy for a date (well, that's a what a friend of a friend of a friend told me).

Of course one might wonder how I know about Fashion Week, Project Runway, and Jay McCarroll ??????

I love this thread...Crimpie in front of mountains instead of flat Misery, everyone eatin' cake, and that Fashion Statement, Mr. Roy: It's not just the flamin' pink jacket, it's those fiery orange shades that really tell the story.

Very nice, Roy!
