From http://www.ahapoetry.com/keirule.htm

Today, many bilingual poets and translators in the mainstream North American haiku scene agree that something in the vicinity of 11 English syllables is a suitable approximation of 17 Japanese syllables, in order to convey about the same amount of information as well as the brevity and the fragmented quality found in Japanese haiku. As to the form, some American poets advocate writing in 3-5-3 syllables or 2-3-2 accented beats. While rigid structuring can be accomplished in 5-7-5 haiku with relative ease due to a greater degree of freedom provided by the extra syllables, such structuring in shorter haiku will have the effect of imposing much more stringent rules on English haiku than on Japanese haiku, thereby severely limiting its potential.

Do not break the rules.

Although "calendarly" inaccurate, I always consider the first of March to be the start of spring and, regardless of whatever the weather's doing, I celebrate by wearing shorts again. This year, I also marked it with a haiku:

March First signals spring.
Short pants on my legs again.
Life improves today.

Snowing in Dublin too, but it is not sticking. Up in the hills and inland yes, but Dalkey is right near the sea and its moderating temps..

I've been here over 17 years and I think it is the coldest March I have seen. Of course that means, higher gas and electric bills, and more firewood.

But I do love the snow. I am definitely a dog (Jennie is a cat). Snow is a dog's summer.

Weschrist lighten up dude, so what if it is blah, blah blah.

eKat I had one of those. Sort of. 1948 Ford pickup that I built a camper on the back, psychedelic painted (it was the easy way out, I was stripping the paint off to prime it and paint but all these colors came through, and a friend said: Just shellac it.)

Bridwell loved it when parked in C4. Cops from Bay Area to Yo Valley stopped me all the time... Manteca, Escalon, Oakdale.

Gawd I wish I never sold it. It was a classic. I rebuilt the engine and of course the wood camper shell (with bed, stereo, stove). And I lost my virginity in it at Camp 4 parking lot. But that is another story. Okay, a babe from Indiana, she was a year or so older and I was hitchin' from the Bay Area to the Valley. She and her two male university buddies, in a VW bug, picked me up outside Groveland.

I was hitchin' because I had left the Ford in C4 parking lot... cheaper to thumb than the gas.

She decided that the Ford was a better place to sleep than the backseat of a Bug. Showered with her the next morning in the Curry employee showers. Never saw or heard from her again.

Lost my wall virginity a couple of days later, turning 19 on Ahwahnee Ledge, West Face of the Leaning Tower. No matches or lighter to light the joint to celebrate. Bummer.

I can't even find photos of the Ford. One loses a lot of things moving around to five countries.

That 48 Ford pickup. But your van looked like a great traveller. Something I'd like to travel in.

Coldest March in Ireland's recorded history.

Snowing some, but up north in Co Antrim, they are looking at eight feet snow drifts, thousands of sheep lost, roads closed. Weird. Snowing in Spain, western France.

Climate change anybody?

eKat, I like spring lamb. Leg of lamb, shoulder stuffed and rolled with herbs, slow braised lamb shank.

I just said to Jennie, when are we going to start our spring cleaning? She replied, "it's not spring yet" (see, she can be lucid, even with Korsakoff's).

Not an Haiku but....

Her Crack (aka Norwegian's Climb)

So gentle, smooth curved lined
Forest pine lingers and uplifts the senses
Fissure rising from the good soil
Gentle incline

Step onto her barely
Notice the axis change
And steps upward quickly gaining height
Tree tops robed in deepest green
Look, the way in down below!

Stop for a second to deep breath
No place for my left foot
Smear it on a glassy polished scoop
and step up quick and get serious

Hands sweaty
Rest one at a time
Big Toe in on small purchase
Grisly lichen all around

Arms pumping
F*#king scary as gear is far below this seam
That ain't that good
Awkward moves
She just lays there bitch

Let up goddammit
Let the f*#k up
I smash down on her and bruise my greasy limp wrist
Control again or fall

I hate this sh#t
F*#k her
I didn't want to be here in the first place
And she never shuts up ever
I know what to do she should listen

Kick her f*#king teeth out

Helpless now stuck
who the f*#k am I
No self control
Self focused
Pathetic
