This was more of a smaller backpack / book bag sized affair...

Actually, Bill "DOLT" Feurer never made backpacks or any software. After Bill died, Don Lauria and Tom Limp purchased in auction the trademark name, DOLT.

Soon afterwards, Tom Limp went into the pack business under the label "DOLT". That company is no longer in business.

Bill F only made pitons, nuts, a few other climbing related hardware items but not packs.

yes I remember a simple day pack w/ DOLt label, too

and a simple chalk bag, one of the first commercially
made chalk bags...it showed retailers there was a market for the item, and opened the door to more delux models, such as the ones
made by Strawberry, and I.

Here is one of those threads Ray,

This is a rich thread and the one with Karrimor/Berghaus etc.,
... but it isn't the one with the Jensen pack and early Jansport dudes pictures which you posted; I'm still looking.

The only "software" I remember Dolt making (as opposed to selling) was the "Doltster" -- a plastic hammer holster I still use. I also had a pair of shoes called "Bill Dolt Blue Boots" but they were identical to "Gollies" made by or for Ellis Brigham in England. Their rubber was a bit like E.B.'s (that Dolt was selling around 1967), but they were all leather like RD's. I ditched them for a pair of P.A.'s that fit and edged better.

I have a Dolt chalk bag and holster. I always wondered about the chalk bag as it seems out of place for the time. But give Jack's comments now it would make sense.

the chalk bag helped more than it seems

see,

retailers definitely sold them and
quite often, later anyway
the bottom seam would blow
so the dealers got sick of 'em
coming back and put new brands
in there - cool how that worked.

Thanks for the Blue Boot information, Johnny.
I'd always wondered whether they were the same, but they were
both rare in these parts.

eKat,

Last week I was trying to remember Frostline. Fun do-it-yourself stuff. Thanks for the reference.

Holy Shit!! ya mean someone else besides myself wore those Blue Gollies? I remember getting those from Bill when he had his factory in Santa Monica........hoooooo they changed my life!!

Then I got EB's on a trip to England in 1969 and my climbing standard shot up two grades!!!

Now that I'm thinking abit more clearly, Bill did make a leather hammer holster that was prized for big walls........
I wonder where the DOLT CART is now?

Poor guy. Ken McNutt must have been in shock when he opened the door and saw Bill. Wasn't that the day after Christmas?

I still have my Dolt pack, very similar to the blue one pictured above that's for sale on eBay.

Mine is brown. It's a bag/pack combo, with the pack shoulder straps zipping into the back to make it more like an airline bag.

Pretty much before it's time, I went all over with that thing.

You know, now that I am making shirts with the original DOLT logo I have to wonder why these packs were made with this logo? The people I licensed the original logo from are the same ones who made these packs. Guess I should ask them why they went this route.

The DOLT packs and other assorted soft goods came out of a side room at West Ridge Mtneering in Santa Monica in the late 70's and owned by..... (Don Lauria speak up)? Alan Roberts and other craftsman had the pleasure of being employed in this endeavor.

Frostline was at some point owned and/or distributed by Holubar. They had a great store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa/Santa Ana in the late 70's.

Both these stores gave backroom outdoor gear makers access to top quality materials and patterns in those days including the first generation Gore Tex as well as Rip Stop and Cordura.
