Saw the thread on Jose (Ammon, my condolences), and that shook loose some relatively recent mention that Rusty Baillie had been hurt down South in a bad rockfall of some sort. Anyone know how he's doing these days...?

Rusty is alive and doing well, living in North Idaho. Pretty much fully recovered from last winter's accident but sporting a couple of good scalp scars. I skied and climbed with him last month and the man is still pulling hard and keeps up on skis just fine. He's an inspiration and a wonderful soul.

We were fortunate enough to spend the day climbing with Rusty and Eric in December. We had the priviledge of devouring stories of climbing by amazing people in amazing times(and a few adult beverages too!)..at the end of the day Rusty offered to retrieve gear on a route, quickly wrapped a rope a couple of times around his waist and up he went..oh yeah..it was about 20 degrees and beginning to snow..I'd say yeah, he's doing alright!! : ) I'm THE LUCKIEST GIRL EVER!!!

Great to hear Rusty is ok. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times when he was living in Arizona.

Many in ST land may not know that he is a notable figure in climbing history. This is a quote from Jim Perrin’s book on Don Whillans, The Villain, recounting the time when Baillie and Dougal Haston beat Whillans to the second British ascent of the Eiger North Face. “In the last days of July 1963, Dougal Haston and Rusty Baillie made the second British ascent of the face, in conditions far from ideal, and the English press were there
again to record the climb and celebrate the “heroes” who had accomplished it. No one was going to be much interested now in who might make the third British ascent. “

Eric, you should encourage Rusty to post some stories here on ST. I would love to hear his impressions of Whillans, Bonnington, Haston, Patey, and the rest.

I'd second a request for Rusty to start posting here.

BobJ Please call me ASAP or email me - heard you had an epic somewhere in the Midriffs and... is your boat still for sale?

I climbed with Rusty several times when he lived here in AZ and bouldered with him again just last year on Flagstaff Mountain in CO. Rusty is a great guy and I'm glad to hear he is OK.
