Looks like a bumpy ride....to the top of the forum, that is.

Maybe others can chime in with some funny anecdotes or at least jokes about chris selling off his worldy possessions or something, to help get the word out his auction's started.

I think it's only 6 days, so it's important for people to be aware, especially since the weekend (where the auctions will be coming into the home stretch) won't get much viewing of the thread. Bump it early and often!

Kind of hard to top Todd and Greg's yard sale from a few weeks ago - http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=481732&msg=494224#msg494224

But it's for a good cause, so hopefully people aren't yarded out, and/or need to fill their stockings. I've always found that feet were pretty good stocking stuffers, but some of Chris Mac's stuff would work pretty good too.

if we win, do we get to choose which of the three charities the proceeds from our auction will go to?

i vote for the central asia institute, been a supporter of them for several years now.

pretty much everything is size medium... except for the north face jacket (yellow puffy)

I am planning to split the $$$ evenly three ways

yeah, not a huge auction but it takes time to list all that stuff!

maybe this spring we will do a bigger supertopo charity auction. might work like this:

manageable group comes together (5-10 people?) who have cool stuff to auction
group then decides who gets the money (presumable climbing related since the auction will be promoted on supertop)
we all have our own separate auctions on ebay so that each person is in charge of their own listing and shipping... but we can all share in promoting of the auction on SuperTopo and elsewhere

just a thought

Chris - Funny, as I was riding the subway this morning - VERY MUCH near time you made that post - a similar idea occurred to me! Not that S/Topo should do group charity auction, but that in general group auction for charity might be an interesting concept. Guess I caught your thought wave.

I think it's a great idea. Who knows - with some volunteer effort(to help with all the work involved in setting up auction/answering queries, promoting, etc., as you mentioned), it could be a really wonderful thing.

HOw come everyone charges so much for shipping? Some Items I can see 5.95, but others, I dont get it. Book rate is pretty low.

shipping AND handling. Cost of preparing the package, going to get it mailed off, etc.

yeah, ill try to organize a charity auction next year. maybe we start with a test run mid year. then at the end of the year, when most people are psyched to give, we try to get as many people as possible on board. if we got just ten people on board that would be big. if we got 50 or 100... that would be HUGE. if each auction raised $1000....

the best thing about this is that i think there are a lot of people who have a few good outdoor items but they just never wear them or use them (wrong color, a gift from a well meaning relative who didn't know they dont ice climb... etc). but sometimes its hard to sell the stuff because consignment shops can take a while and the stuff is just too nice to just give away... this auction stuff could be the perfect solution. especially for those who want to donate to non-profits but dont necessarily have the $$$

i just left the shipping the same for all items because:

1) wanted to save time in the listing process
2) if you look around on ebay most people charge that much or more for just about anything no matter how small
3) all the proceeds are for non-profits so i didn't think that would be a hold up... but maybe i was wrong

AWWW, some people would complain if you hanged em with a new rope.

And in the internet, SOMEONE will complain about ANYTHING, so, just forge ahead with your auction and don't worry about the shipping, or the shipping charge complaints.

What's this doing way down at the bottom of page 2??

Getting down to the bidding war zone... Some items are ending in about 20 hours, other 1 day 15 hours.

When closing time comes, will the Taco go silent as people furiously try to snag the last bids? Is anyone using one of those stealth auction software programs that snags the winning bid at the last minute?

I have taken it as my duty to bump this thread again. Just in case anyone hasn't seen it. The countdown is on - some items are 10 hours from ending.

Remember, it's not just about getting some booty, but also to help support the causes Chris chose.

holly crap, i just racked in the loot on this well below my max bidding price. common y'all, its for charity, ya could have made me spend more!

thanks chris, this is a great idea, those are all charity's i happily support otherwise, and doing so while getting good booty is all the better.

the auction raised 950.07 plus the shipping fees (supertopo is donating the $144 shipping costs) so the grand total comes to 1094.07. That will be split evenly between the three non-profits

I will do another one of these auctions in the spring and hopefully we can raise even more money!

And i am donating some other gear to the Kumbu climbing school. I know that right now they really need ice screws, so anybody who has extra ice screws that wants them to go to a good cause. send me an email

I got my goodies almost instantaneously! I love this auction idea and am looking forward to the next one.

I definitely went over my limits a tad, but that's a good thing... and helped bid up a bunch of other stuff too.

At the end of the day, it's just "stuff", but it's nice knowing that the acquisition of material things is going to help out some folks who can really use the help.
