5+, i'm guessing 5.7/5.8 sometimes ice covered.

small factor, that

A friend climbed it. Near the top he was overtaken by a euro team that grabbed his gear, even pulled on his rope. Right after they passed one of them pulled off a huge rock that my friend barely dodged.
He watched it fall, hit another party below, detach them from the mountain.
They hit the snowfield below leaving a red stain over 100m long.

I wouldn't worry about the difficulty of the rock, mate.

good-looking line, typically given an alpine grade TD+/ED1, which, almost paradoxically, is more meaningful than five-whatever

The hardest rock is about 5.9 or 5.9 plus, but that is only a number and you are not climbing shorts with a chock bag around your waist. Pulling on pieces helps speed things up and can in some instances get you past an icy piece of rock or whatever. If you go light you still have some clothing in packs, food, water and maybe a stove. One of you could take a pair of light rock shoes for the pitches on the black slabs and grey tower. Get on it real early so there is less chance of climbing below other parties. Reasons mentioned in Piton Ron's post above.

Cheers,

Cassin/Esposito/Tizzoni, 1938, TD+/ED1, IV, 5c/6a, A1, 1200m

The TD stands for the overall difficulty of the route, in this case Tres Difficult or very difficult in the alpine rating.

5c/6a is the technical rock grades which is 5.8/5.9 in Yosemite Decimal System. Remember that your be most likely wearing plastics so its not like climbing in a pair of slippers.

5c = 5.8
6a = 5.9

Conditions are the key, so allow yourself an entire summer for it. Trust me on this one. Climb it when the rock is dry and the weather is stable.

Sorry for being a jerk earlier!
