Do any of you feed your pups a raw meat diet?

My boarder is a pet nutritionist, and he's a big proponent of raw meat diets for dogs. His rationale is based on (in part) the fact that dogs are truly and genetically carnivores, and their digestive system (and mouths/teeth) are designed for meat diets. Further, while dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, commercial foods have only been around for about ~150 years. He posits that many typical dog ailments are related to the large amounts of grain in typical commercial dog foods.

One may consider his view biased because he also prepares & sells a raw meat food product for dogs, but one also may see this as an outgrowth of a strong belief that he holds. In any case, I've been aware of this for some time, and the raw meat proponent's arguments make a fair amount of intuitive sense.

If you feed your dog(s) such a diet, what benefits or effects have you observed? Have you seen any illnesses in your dog(s) that seemed likely to be related to that diet?

What is the source of your food? The content?

first, Chiloe, sorry for your best friend.

on to raw food-i am a chef, have a lot of good scraps around-from meats that i would eat-the beagle gets the bone, the cartilage, some skin and flesh, of chicken beef and lamb. he also by choice eats various fruits and vegetables-that combined with a tiny amount of fancy grain and gluten free kibble has kept him pretty darn healthy-he's 10, and just did a long day in the Sierras, 6 miles to around 12.000 feet. So yes i think it's good but dont be too neurotic about it. Buddy the 10 year old is bottom right.

Thanks, DK & TTR.

I've heard the same benefits re: waste, teeth & coat.

The product my boarder makes would probably cost around $25/month to feed Max...the good-quality commercial food he's eating right now costs $53/30 lbs, and lasts at least two months. Definitely a cost increase.

The logistics around it sound problematic, too: takes up space in the freezer & fridge, dogsitters have to follow close directions, and like you mention: roadtrips would be a PITA.

Is it feasible to do raw meat at home, and go with kibble periodically? Some don't seem to recommend this, as the digestive process for either is differing...on the other hand, it seems kind of silly that a dog...who's genetically-wired for scavenging...couldn't handle an occasional shift like that...?

apoogee, you can NOT go back and forth between the raw diet with dry dog food, it is too hard on a dogs digestive system.

edit apogee, :answer for below question.. With our dog, the two words i would use are...>Bad diarrhea and gas..
email me your addy and i will send you the book...

I'm not going to get involved in this whole raw food thing, because I don't think there is any one diet that is best for every dog out there, but I will say - dogs are definitely not carnivores the way cats are. Their anatomy and physiology suggest that they are much more omnivorous.

nita, I've read the same thing...and far be it from me to put my pup at risk...

But doesn't it seem odd that a dog's digestive tract couldn't handle such a shift (esp. if it's temporary)? Moving from kibble to raw meat is going to require a transition at some point... Anybody have any experience is seeing a dog go from one to the other?

I'm curious about the book mentioned upthread, too.
