Kath,

That is a priceless photo of Skadi. She's just glowing with doggie love--look at those eyes...and the doll on her back--OMG...too funny!

CT--Doodle Bug is such a cutie! What price love, eh? When it comes right down to it...we talk about the money...but we'd all rather have the love.

Word, Chiloe. Word. Only I'd go a step further and say the perfection of dogs (and the myriad other pets we love) is that they have soul...and very little else.

No ego to get in the way of sharing their affection whole-heartedly and without reservation.

No petty little mind that has them hating someone because of the color of their skin, or their political beliefs, or their country of origin.

A remarkably short-term memory when it comes to getting scolded and incredibly long-term when it comes to all the fun things you've done with them.

And the amazing ability to eat the same DOG FOOD day after day after day, and still get excited each time you fill the bowl. Simply amazing.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favourite chair...must try this on their bed.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was as...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odour of the glass tubes they call "beer.." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

hey there mighty hiker, say, here is the current word on the trail from the cat-journels of the "fabulous-five":

-->spread the word... warning... it has just now been discovered that said-mountain-trail "catwalk shelf" has been blockaged!!!! no more access from northwest kitchen valley, to north-east food supply...

it has been bouldered-up by HUGE vases, a LONG large radio, glass candles and a glass-statue--now those tons of "shaled shaped" clutter are no more ours to knock-through on our way to a good meal!!!!

repeat, there is NO access to said-catwalk-trail... REPEAT! there is NO ACCESS to said-trail!!!

we MUST by-pass knocking down shale-shaped frame-photos (i know, i know, huge fun, now gone, adding insult to shock), all due to said-blockades at BOTH ends of trail....we must cross into wild-goofy-dog territory, there is no other way to the "north-east stairway-provisions climb"... sad but true...

if we want to eat, we trail through "dog camp"... seek out various enclaves of "cave shelters" if you can...

your're own your own, i'm making a run for it now! ...

why the HECK our critter loving home-renter feeds us on the stairs, i'll know... LEAST we get a good sleep, come summit-time though---AND---relief stations ARE still available there... i'll be the first to add "it's a good thing"... dogs hanging-out near our litter, just ain't my thing...

okay here i go,who's next? i can eat for five you know, so you best be making tracks... over and out... ;)

ahhhhhhhhhh, the sound of adventure... hmmmm, say, is that DOG i hear????

;) meow....

Hope he's all loose and flexible these days. . . a lot of love was in that little bottle of Rimadyl!

Yup, he knows he feels better. This morning he played "chase" with Sophie, like a bear trying to catch a fox.

It is with deep sorrow that I must report the passing of Midnight.

(June '08)

On Sunday the 12th.
He came into our lives from the pound via Petsmart in 1995. He was full grown then, estimated to be 3-4 years old at the time.

A 'dwarf newfoundland' he was nonetheless a big dog @ 85lbs. As magnificent as they come, he could wag his tail while lying on the floor and make the whole house shake with this percussion. He never told us about his past, but for a couple of years he had an aversion to getting in to high vehicles like my Trooper, though he would, inadvertently, push you out of the way in his enthusiasm, to get in a car 'for a ride!'
Glossy /weird black coat, massive head, he rarely barked, but could howl with the best... I could never tell if his eyes were classic Newfie Brown or had just the yellow touch of the wolf.

Yesterday, Bastille day '09 was the 17th anniversary of the passing of Alobar,

my best friend from '85-92. He ran half marathons, climbed fifth class slab on a number of occasions, could catch a frisbee above my 5.11 head( a sixty pound dog) and was the only witness to the first ascent of Lucille.

Many climbers (Russ, Cilley Raypole, Jwaugh,Christian Griffith etc) met, knew, and interacted with him.

Today i like to think of Skadi, Midnight and Al Swimming and cavorting together.

Hipshot and Alobar both RIP, which do you think was the alpha? The 60# dog or the 7# cat?

I feel your pain Jaybro. Given the choice, how many of us would
trade a few of our own years if we could give them more time?

Here's a couple shots in a series I've started called "Dog with Five Tennies"
In the first one, he's basically out like a light, pounded from a full day at the crag.
Why he's hugging my Tennie, who knows, but he was so cute.

This is Cookie at the beach last week. She's a white boxer I foster(take her home and out for a few days when I can) from Boxer Rescue Los Angeles. She's a super dog but nobody wants her because she's deaf. Been at the kennel almost a year now, trapped in a 4'x6' run, getting short walks on the weekends when we have enough weekend volunteers. Her 1st trip ever to the beach and boy did she ever make the most of it! Played non-stop for 6 hours. I thought she was going to rub a hole in her nose from pushing this rock around.
We've been at capacity(80 dogs max) for almost a year now, placing as many as 22(average~8) in a weekend but due to the current economic and housing situation we can easily take in 22 more on Monday and be right back at capacity.
Always get a dog from a shelter or rescue. They'll be greatful forever. And go by and walk some dogs if you can spare the time.

Hoh man!!

There is a bond between people and their close dogs that is deeper, or maybe closer, in many ways, than that exists between humans. The Novelist Milan Kundera expressed this in a way that to my experience, has not been improved on, in the Novel, "The unbearable lightness of being". That is not one of the parts of that novel / movie that gets the most attention. I have had fairly recent conversation with the best offwidth climber ever™ where she mentioned that that was the part of that novel that resonated with her, as well. Perhaps she will chime in, though she doesn't do the taco...

I am a lifelong fan of P-funk and brother George's atomic dog, as well.....
