magnesium carbonate (chalk) can be had for super cheap at a good potter supply store. They use it to thicken glazes or something.

Do a little diggin online and you can turn up boxes of 32 rolls of 1.5 x 15 yd. Johnson & Johnson tape. That's the good stuff.

Russ edit: tape is g'hey

SM edit: but I use it

I buy my chalk here always.

Tape you can get here too, but I never buy tape nor need it.

The magnesuim carbonate sold for a glaze ingredient isn't at all like block chalk which is a naturaly mined calcium/magnesium carbonate rock.

It's much denser, (think chalk bag full of sand) and doesn't adhere to the hands well or have the same frictional "feel".

It is a better moisture absorber though. Almost to good.

Here, the local fixation is on High School Football.

And the budget-plea for Tape overrides geeks in a geometry class, in need of #2 Ticonderoga pencils. I'm pretty sure The School Board hasn't figured out how to get a good angle on getting Coach's Tape at a wholesale price, because the entire curriculum-of-the-mind has been discarded in favor of pursuit of a cloth banner to hang in the gym.

I have no idea about magnesium carbonate. Maybe it's in the stockroom, unused and not understood.

When I was a Student, I relieved the stockroom of the potassium nitrate (smoke bombs) and the butyric acid (stink bombs).

I could climb my new routes above, way up, above the High School, and the acoustics of the valley (not that valley, a tiny valley) allowed me to laugh when I heard the abusive football coach ostensibly urge his minions to success.

I could hear the coach, berating and denigrating, man after man after man, from my position on a rock, above it all.

The Coach could tape up the ankles, but, he didn't tape up the mental scars (and torn knee ligaments, for some) that would be with those young guys forever.

Friday Nights Lights - the real version.

Then again, maybe I have it all wrong.

Maybe a football program, berating a man, until he learns to be great, is the way to go.
