I have two:
Raven, a 14yr old Kelpy/Sheppard X (Looking pretty good for her age I might say!)
And Ruby, a 1 yr old Beagle/Walker Hound? X
Both are very good dogs. Ruby recently got hit by a car 10 feet away from me right in front of my house, but she is fine! She's built like a brick s#ithouse. I'm so relieved!

Hahaha, Chaz, that is classic! My dogs don't give a damn about playing fetch, with a frisbee, tennis ball, stick, or anything (I'm kind of glad!).

My beautiful girl Luna, seen here looking very serious while playing "queen of the stump" and watching her silly humans climb a frozen waterfall:
She only has two truly bad habits-running away and eating dirty laundry. The laundry-eating caught up with us and she had emergency surgery to remove what looked like part of a sock from her intestine a week ago. She is now back in the doggie hospital battling pancreatitis. We are hoping with all our might that we are worthy of being granted the chance to spend many more years with her at our side.

Note the checkered leash? It matches perfectly with the collar. The red undertones of the leash/collar combination work best to highlight the dark brindle of this boxer's coat.
The red thing on her back is the holder for her pack sack. Because there's no way I'm gonna haul her water.
This girl works it like no other bitch could.

Yes, I see what you mean. The color compliments are subtle, yet effective. Not overpowering, but bold enough to declare its existence. Very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing. =)
I too give careful consideration to my bitches' outfit. Here is a shot of Ruby (aka Boober) on a backpacking trip to Desolation Wilderness.
She had to pull her weight, and carry her food, just like the rest of us. Well...Raven is retired from carrying the pack, but whatever. Notice how the reds and greens, when contrasted with her white coat really stand out, and draw attention to her as the undisputable queen of the dorks. Don't let the look on her face fool you, SHE LOVES IT!

Yeah, pretty much. She was definitely doing some friction slab maneuvers skizzling around Desolation. When she first tried them on it was Hi-Frikkin'-Larious! But once she figured out how to walk and run in them, she was going everywhere. On a four day backpacking trip on granite, booties are a must! The granite will just wear their pads raw in no time flat.
These booties are the Vibram soled ones from Ruffwear. They are hell of expensive ($80!!!). But in the past I have used cheaper, lesser models, like some that are just heavy-duty Cordura, but they don't hold up well, and/or come off/get lost easily. These ones are definitely the best. I just wonder how they will do in the snow?
One time on a ski tour, Raven punched through the snow, and hit a buried tree or something, and sliced her foot open pretty bad. There was a lot of blood, and getting her out was a nightmare! I'm all about the booties. You just have to be careful about their dew claws rubbing against their wrist(?)ankle(?) from where the velcro strap is placed.
Anyone else deal with this type of stuff?

Hey Scooter,
I once tried to camp in a snow cave with Raven at the 10,000ft level on the Green Butte Ridge of Mt. Shasta. I figured that if she had a good pad, and wore a vest like that, then she would be fine.
Yeah, it didn't work out that way at all. She was freezing, and shaking, and we ended up spooning in my sleeping bag all night. It sucked! We were warm, but I didn't sleep for jack.

Daisy Dog stays pretty warm in the vest. She pulls her back legs into it and curls up into the size of beach ball. Lots of nights out too and pretty cold, maybe in the 20's.

I hate to admit this...
My greyhound, Shakespeare, has a down jacket I custom made for him. It was an old REI down jacket, belonging to my girlfriend, that just needed to be taken in around his mid-section. The poor guy loves to be outside when it's cold, even in the snow, but he just has no body fat, whatsoever. So, had to resort to that.
edit: Haven't done the k9 footwear. Sounds cool. Their feet definitely get tender on long trips or if they haven't been out in a while. Shakespeare does have a pack to carry his own food and water though.

Feline thread hijack - LEB started with the cats. And Loki is a girl kitty. She can climb and dyno way better than those dog people, too.

my cats are the light of my life. they always make me feel better. i have two, d. and bump. on friday d. was peeing blood and took her to the vet - this was all right before i had to rush out to a fugly math test - it was so freakin scary. luckily she only has a bladder infection. i was so scared. she is 14 years old, but i'm not ready to lose her, esp. not right now. i don't have any digital photos. but d. is yellow and white, and bump is a lovely calico.

Considering that most of the genes of our domestic cat come from North African wildcats, and considering that cats are stealth predators, their colouration is a considerable advantage. The stripey patterns that most cats have blend well into a semi-desert environment, as does orange colouration.
I believe that only male cats can be solid orange - orange females always have some white patches. But I don't know why.

Well, Lois, I hope this hijack is as interesting to at least a few others as to us.
As far as enviro stuff goes, I have (anecdotally) observed more Torties in the midwest than in CA-colder winters/more humid summers?
I have had calicos appear from a line of t-shells. Ben-her (a t-shell), begat Geronimo (also a t), who begat Anthony (a Calico.) Both B-H and G were feasome hunters (I remember B-h dragging home a rabbit that was larger than she was) G nabbed a flying squirrel once. Anthony, on the other hand, was special. Not smart; couldn't avoid rain, even in california, fell in the pool more than once. I think she was nearsighted, as well. I once watched her jump up from a piano bench and miss the piano. This is not a staement about all calicos but I often wondered if her 'smart' genes were somehow diluted.
