As most SuperTopians know, the Yosemite Facelift is on September 26th - 30th this year. Only three months to go. Organized by the Yosemite Climbing Association (www.yosemiteclimbing.org) and its illustrious executive director, Ken Yager aka Chicken Skinner.

Yosemite is the heart of SuperTopia. SuperTopians like to get together to eat, drink, have fun, and climb. (Sushi fest, anyone?) So I have an idea. It is that as many SuperTopians as possible attend the Facelift, camp together, help out a bit, and do the aforementioned fun stuff. It may take some holiday and travel planning, but would be an awesomely good time, and would help a most excellent cause. We could, without undue effort, give back something to a place that's special to us all.

Aha, you say, what's this nonsense about all camping together? And just how much fun could we have, anyway? Well, there's a solution. Last year Ken was able to arrange spots in Camp 4 for Facelifters. This year he's done even better - for September 25th onward, he's obtained some group sites in Yellow Pines. Near Sentinel Beach.

We can all camp together at Yellow Pines, if we want. No services except for water and tables and toilets - just like Camp 4. No Camp 4 crowds and boulders and scene, but with attractions of its own. Quieter. Unique opportunity to camp together. Probably some boulders around somewhere. Maybe not so much official presence. Only a kilometre walk from the Lodge and Camp 4, for those craving.

We can also meet other Facelifters, and rumour has it that #46, and Werner, will make cameo appearances. (Not together, of course.) And not much work is required - indeed, the motivation challenged can get away with just going climbing, as long as they agree to thoroughly clean up wherever they go.

My idea is that those who can, arrive on Tuesday (September 25th), and we have a big SuperTopo barbeque that night at Yellow Pines. Sushi fest, if Doug et al can be persuaded, and it's otherwise ok. There are dinners, speakers and such most of the other Facelift nights, but we could do other things together, e.g. breakfasts. There'd be space for those arriving later in the week, or for the weekend. And for sure we could climb together, have fun, and help Ken.

Who's interested?

I can provide camping (the whole campground!) for one hundred people for that night. Afterwards you may have to camp elsewhere ( I can help with that too, ) Contact me. If this doesn't work out I will schedule another night program for the same evening. Other evening programs include, Tom Frost, Perhaps Ron Kauk, Tim O'Neill. Tommy Caldwell, (live band, participant raffle, free food, free drink on the night of the 30th within walking distance with a headlamp).

Last year was my 2nd year at the face-lift. Stayed at Yellow Pines both times. Brought the wife this time and she enjoyed meeting the names she had been hearing for so long. The actual work days were typical laid-back volunteer work and the nights around the campfire were some to remember. Yea, a lot of us lurkers were there, just not many posters. Maybe this is the year of the posters? Putting faces to the names would be fun and we get to help Ken out at the same time. See you there,

Thanks for all the interest! I'm sure Ken will be pleased.

T*R: The Facelift is September 26th - 30th, inclusive. (Wednesday - Sunday.) Daytime volunteer stuff, evening entertainment, every day. But we plan to have a SuperTopo get together on the evening of Tuesday September 25th at Yellow Pines, for all who can make it.

There's a combination of objectives:
Camp together at Yellow Pines on the 25th/26th, and hopefully for longer, though I'm sure it's a big campsite juggling act for Ken.
Have a big ST BBQ on the evening of the 25th.
To the extent possible and wanted, camp and hang out and volunteer and climb together right through the Facelift.
Assuming that the largest number of SuperTopians will be there for the weekend, perhaps have a breakfast on Sunday (30th).

As one of the main objectives of the Facelift is environmental stewardship, hopefully we can emphasize that too. Carpooling or using transit. (Last year someone came on transit from Santa Barbara!) Recycling. And of course helping.

OK, I'm marking my calendar for this. Tuesday the 25th - is that what we've decided?

I'd be honored to try to do the sushifest thing it can be part of the BBQ. As it's a national park and all I'm not sure how to accept the donations required for fish for something like this.

Also, I'll be heading home by Friday at the latest. That's the Edit:labor day weekend and I need to be here at the Farmers Market swinging sushi (it's one of the biggest days of the season).

So... ideas on how to do sushi?

Oh, but I might head out early so I can maybe do a wall quickly.

I suggest we see what interest there is in sushi, as opposed to a BBQ or such. Also check on the logistics and and bureaucratic things. A BBQ would be a simple fall back, if preferred or needed.

Who knows, perhaps Russ and the S*** Talkers will attend and play a little poker?

I'm thinking that there might be a fair amount of people there so having a BBQ and sushi combo might work better for me.

There are several reasons why Ken and I thought the 25th might work well. The main one is that there will be special events every other night of the Facelift. Speakers, food, drink, prizes etc. No competition on the 25th. Also, there's definitely large group camping at Yellow Pines available that night, but possibly not, or at least not to the same extent, later in the week.

Having it on the 25th also encourages people to come for all of the Facelift. (I think and hope...)

For those of us from far away, it may make less difference. I'll probably take a week off, anyway, and may already be in the Valley. Unfortunately, not so convenient for those who can't take time off during the week, or holiday time. Hence the idea of a Sunday morning something or other. Then, if a group comes up from the Bay area or such, we can still do something, especially for those who can't make the 25th.

Perhaps there'll be a church group breakfast somewhere in the Valley that morning, that we can visit? Largo could provide tips on etiquette...

beginning in august i will have class on tuesday and thursday evenings. depending on what is happening at work, i can come early on friday morning and stay for the weekend. alternatively, i can come out for the day on wednesday. i'm not too far away. ideally, i could come out wednesday, go back for school on thursday, and then coem back on friday morning and return monday or tuesday afternoon, if anyone could carpool from sac / foothills on those days. otherwise i will just make one trip. does that make sense? i could do both if for one trip i can carpool or else all that driving would make me feel too guilty. dang, i must really want to go or my brain wouldn't be working so hard to figure out how to spend as much time w/u guys cleaning up as possible AND not skip class.

i wanted to go to the half dome anniversary tomorrow but i couldn't find anyone to cover my shift on a saturday and i would feel too guilty calling in sick.

thanks. we can discuss it in sept, but something easier but long would probly be more fun. don't really know if it sounds ilke fun to me to fall my way up 5 pitches... plus, is it unsafe to keep falling like that, esp. when high up? i don't mind being physically and mentally taxed, but i don't know if i wanna commit to something that long when i'm not solid on the grade. we'll see. we still have a couple months. and dinkum was climbed basically off the couch and my ankles were slipping out of my shoes. maybe if i get in a lot more climbing before, it won't be an issue.

Thanks! It's gratifying to see all this interest in the Facelift, and it should make the event even more successful. Substantial participation by SuperTopians and the climbing community will let us do something for others, and send a message to the world (and the NPS) about the importance of this area to us. Hopefully we'll have some historic climbing figures, to aid with that. (Or free climb, or boulder, or pink point...)

The Facelift is intended to help Yosemite, the climbing community, and the public. There's a lot going on over the five days - large numbers of volunteers, supplies and materials, evening socials (food, speakers, prizes), sponsors, and so on. We need to help Ken and the Yosemite Climbing Association, and not add to his enormous pile of things to do. There are many things SuperTopians perhaps COULD do over the five days, but keeping it simple seems desirable.

The most important things SuperTopians can do to help with the Facelift are:
Attend and help, in as environmentally-friendly a manner as feasible, and for as long as possible.
Hang out with fellow SuperTopians on the 25th/26th, in a fairly organized manner. Hopefully at other times, too.
Join the YCA, and make a donation!
 Have fun!!

I'm some distance from Yosemite, and so can only help plan. Some solid local help is needed. The key things:
We only (for sure) have large group camping on the 25th/26th, at Yellow Pines. I suspect it's needed on other Facelift days for youth groups who're helping. From then on, we may be camping in groups, but not as a single large group.
Free admission to the Park, and free camping, for those helping with the Facelift. (Need to sign up IN ADVANCE!)
The big SuperTopo social event has to be the evening of the 25th. Sushi, BBQ, or some other fine dining are all ok with me. A BBQ is more flexible, given that numbers may not be very certain - simply provide BBQs, lanterns, and some condiments, and the rest is simple. Sushi requires more organizing, and isn't very flexible in terms of numbers.
All going well, we'll draw many uninvited but welcome climber guests to the event on the 25th. Perhaps some well known climbers from Yosemite's past, some of the current denizens of Camp 4, maybe the NPS climbers - John Dill, Werner, and so on.
Free camping on other days is likely, for those helping. However, it may not be for large groups, and may be spread out.
One person has generously offered to do pancake breakfasts each morning, which would be another chance to get together, though we'd have to figure out a central location, and work out logistics and finances. Also whether to have it on just one morning (Sunday - 30th?), or several.
Somehow I suspect that amplified music, explosions, bongo drums, and other conspicuous behaviour may not be a good idea. We need to at least pretend to be responsible climber-citizens during the Facelift.

We need to decide what form the event on the evening of the 25th will take, and what other group social things we want to do. Thoughts?

Should I be keeping some sort of list of people who say they'll be there, or would that be overly organized?

Ken: Yup, I'm in. I owe you one and owe Yosemite a lifetime of "one's".

I'm not going to contemplate details for another couple of weeks so for now marking my iCal will suffice.

What I'll probably do is simply state I'm doing sushi and not try and promo it. If you want in on the sliced fish you'll have to send me $20 a few weeks in advance. Or maybe give folks an option of putting in $10 with an honest agreement that they will also eat the other grubables.

I'm an idiot edit styleee: I can't even read a dam calendar. Labor day is the beginning of September and not the end. I guess that restriction is not a problem. Hmm....

By my count, 27, including the maybes. A good start. There are a few others who are too shy to post publicly, but will be there. As we have up to 100 places at Yellow Pines on the 25th, there's still room.

Now we just have to figure out what we're doing as a group. Camping at Yellow Pines on the 25th/26th, and a sushifest (or equivalent) and party on the evening of the 25th, seem set. Hopefully Chicken Skinner can post something about camping the other nights, and general arrangements for those helping at the Facelift (park admission, camping). Then there's possible pancake breakfasts one or more other mornings. Doing Facelift projects in smaller SuperTopo groups also makes sense. What else?

T*R: If EKat and Mark push your truck off a cliff at the Facelift, then we'll just have to clean it up afterward. Chicken Skinner won't be impressed.

Hello everybody,

The camping situation is as follows. September 25th we have the whole Yellow Pines Campground for 100 people. September 26-30 we have Yellow Pines sites A and B for 50 people. September 26-30 we have 6 sites in Camp 4 for 56 people though I don't have the site numbers yet. I should have this information soon.

If you are going to commit, email me and I will put you on the list and verify your site number. I need to have your name, which nights you want to stay, which campground you prefer, and how many in your party. I am going to be booking the sites, please make sure I have this information, it is a lot easier on me. The first people to do this will get the sites until they have filled up. My email is yager@inreach.com.

Lets hear it for Mighty Hiker. Thanks for your help Anders.
