I can never remember a time when Dave Evans was not around and like Richard Harrison, another low-key Stonemaster, Dave has climbed so long he's basically done every worthwhile formation out there. I remember about 50 years ago parked up in Humber Park and drinking malt liquor with Dave . . .

I remember whenever I was in the mood to sit at the campfire till 2am at Josh all those winters ago, Dave was always the one person sitting talking till the wee hours. I haven't seen him in a while even though our paths must be crossing all the time.

Dave soloed The Column when he was 16 years old, climbed a dozen El Cap routes as a young lad, did the first ascent of Figures on a Landscape, done more desert towers than most, and , of course, climbed The Totem Pole. He married a lovely girl, has a wonderful young son, and now rides the dirt bike for kicks. He's the bull, the beast , the hawk, the ghost. (Largo;...I think that was more closer to 60 years ago with that malt liquor in Humber Park;..best check your dates.....)

in '78 or so dave and i poached that two-pitch .10a face route that goes straight up the center of the west face of the big formation on the cohen property -- you can see it from hemingway butress -- can't remember the name of it, but it was pretty good. dave was one smooth and controlled face climber, i'll tell you what. only time i ever tied into a cord with him, despite seeing him every weekend for 20 years or so.

dude's always been an inspiration to me. he's done it all, but you'd never know it -- he's got some kind of pathological aversion to spray. a quiet giant.

Dave Houser and I put 7th Heaven up. We also added another route to the right of it called Sun Day which has probably never had a second. Too bad that wall is off limits, it had huge potential. They should have thrown that f#cker in jail for shooting at people though!

Did 7th Heaven with Troll, we got the bullhorn (no bullets) about halfway where you become visible. Funny memory, "climbers on the rock, climbers on the rock, you are punk a-holes". Or something like that.

Dave sat and drew a topo for Keeler Needle(see recent TR)for me that was spot on. I tried to do the same for Shipley a year or two later, probably wasn't half as accurate. He bagged it of course.

Yah Dave never said much but always cranked whatever ya had going. Good guy and a great climber.

Hey I remember 7th heaven, I climbed it with MP and Todd Gordon and this dude Ian and another guy. Ian led the crux pitch. Man that was back in EB's and we had 5 guys standing on this little dike in a semi hanging belay at the top. I ended up last to go and it was dark and freezing ass by the time I finally got to bail....Thoses were the days - now I know that when its time to bail a wise man bogarts right in front and raps first - hell with group decisions.

I saw Ian at roubidoux about a year later and he was so lovesick and pussywhipped i wanted to euthanize him. Wonder if the poor guy recovered.

I got to hang out/crash out in Todds' yard a few times and this one night around the fire there was this dog that was just ball crazy or stick crazy. Anyway, somebody is trying to get this thing out of the dogs mouth to throw it again and says 'How do you make him drop it?' Dave real smooth like says 'Tell him a riddle'. I don't know why but that still just cracks me up every time I think about it.

7th heaven is a way cool route. I did it once in 77 or 78 when it seemed open and again years later when it was closed. I was also there when Dave did the FA on Figures on a Landscape. He was cool and controlled. Maria and I followed them a day or so later for the 2nd. I still think of that as a resume climb. A toast to Dave Evans, great climbs great climber

Quite a few years ago we were sitting at granny's having breakfast when my partner noticed Dave walk in with a couple of friends.
He got up from our table , walked over to Dave, fell on the floor and started chanting "we're not worthy, we're not worthy"
Then he yelled back to me, "this dude put up figures!"

Todd, now you're embarassing me. Here's a little story to bring my ego back to earth.

When I had the sponsorship gig at Boreal I got to participate in many fun events. One of the best was the Ice Climbing Festival in Ouray. We were one of the many sponsors and I got to go and climb as well as hand out booty and do the boot demo.
I don't know why but the first time I met Jeff Lowe I was overcome with bashfulness. His wife Terry (?) introduced us and I nervously blurted out something like "I"ve always admired you," but sillier. He looked at me uncomfortably as we shook hands and didn't say a thing. His look said it all though, "what an idiot!"

Hmm...yes 50 big ones, half a century, whoa! I don't feel much different except that my finger hurts.

I don't really understand what people mean by "growing up." I see people around who are my age and they look old and they act old (non-climbers). Why don't I (we)?
I have read that by keeping a youthful perspective and pursuing youthful activities (climbing, mtn. biking, sex, etc.) one can produce a hormone that actually physically slows down the aging process. So...gimme more of that stuff!!!
Cheers y'all.

Big Dave, I'm a little late to this thread, and I don't have any digital climbing pictures to share. But I have spent a lot of time over the years with the man. The first time I met 1979-80 him he was drilling bolts on Swept Away in JT. years of occasional climbing, lots of mt bike riding, years of working together, (Dave recruited me into the air pollution testing business with him and Craig Fry) motorcycle riding and much more. He lives just a few miles away.

Dave when are we going riding?

Wasn't he co-leader of the Sheep Buggers along with Craig Fry? Impressive career, doing all those climbs, leading the Buggerers, family man. Hats off to Steve Evans!

Sorry Roy, I think Russ is right, it isn't Yab in that shot. I can almost paste a name on that face. Looks a bit like Terry Goodykoontz but I think not.

That pic of "We Must, We Must, We Must Improve Our Bust," reminded me of an unspoken rivalry with a man whom I never had any business competing with. That man is "The Master," aka Mr. Hensel SIR. On the day of the F.A. I BARELY squeaked through for the lead after many tries. Gordo followed and along came Hennie to do the 2nd A. As improbable as it might seem Hensel struggled (must have been a reach problem where my +5 ape index helped). It took him more than one try, to our amazement. Man, were we stoked (after all, it was in the day of the "Mobile Harrassment Unit")!
It only happened one other time that I can remember. That was at Suicide when we did the FA of "Compound Eyes." Once again it was a reach problem, straight sideways.
Hensel and I shared a goal for a few years, and that was to climb every route at Suicide and Tahquitz, no matter how obscure. We went after it, doing many piles and ridiculously stupid routes together.
Those were some good times.
I was there when Hensel led the first (?) free ascent of "Ishi," he was badass then and still is. I believe he walked " The Thin Red Line" (again) at the "old Ass" reunion recently.
I bow down to "The Master."

Bump for ego gratification and hero worship.
