August 3-5, 2007. Vedauwoo Boogaloo

At Crimpie's request, let's examine the beta for the Boogaloo. I'm thinking many people will fly into Denver or wherever they may have friends and ride to Wyoming with them. This also allows some climbing in Colorado in and around the weekend. But let's look at some other possibilities. Here's a Google map link to the turnoff on Vedauwoo Road.

http://tinyurl.com/22ojyc

You could also fly into Laramie, WY or Fort Collins. If you wanted to be self-sufficient and rent a car, that's an option. But really, someone can probably pick you up.

Laramie is 16 miles away, so you could go into town to eat if you want. Camping is $6 per night and it includes water, bathrooms, and picnic pables. It's first come first serve, so we will head up and get a good site for us all. There free camping nearby for overflow.

We will bring extra grills, ice chests, ice, solar shower, silver ware and plates, you name it. So those of you flying in just get a little food at the grocery store, maybe some meat and drinks, and just show up.

If you don't have a guide book, mountainproject has some of the routes listed. You can print them out in a batch.

Good point, the campground is beautiful and "comodious," with a lifetime's full of idiosyncratic climbing a few minutes walk away. However, that date frame is, bullseye in, that campground's heavy season. As libertine as Wyo is, the highway patrol does respond to noise violations in that particular zone. Some of the RV-generator crew ironically insist on quiet hours as well.

For a bacchanal of this scope other options must be considered. There are some other spots within three klicks of there that I can think of and there were some people perporting to be advance scouts checking this all out. But the campground is a good starting locus, maybe the overflow, as well.

I hope I don't need to add, that in greater Vedauwoo there has, in the past, been a broken glass, off-road tire rut, kind of problem. This would be a stellar time to be one with the "Leave no trace" ethic.

I am planning to stay late and clean up. Is it too harsh to say bring trash bags or be prepared to be left out of the coolist sh#t?

mapquest style edit;
Since 1/1/77 this has been my "default location," though gawd knows, I have strayed.

I'm in. I just need to make the flight reservations. I will likely fly into Denver and figure it out from there. I'd like to spend at least a week though.

Let me know who will be around to play with. I'm an off width noob but happy to try anything.

Long sleeve shirts are key! As is tape, sturdy pants, and a wind breaker. Love Vedauwoo, spent 5 weeks there a couple summers ago, still have the scars! The normal campground is nice, but seems like you all could get one of the out of the way spots as well. Around the nats or polland hill?

After you leave Centinial right before you start going up to snowy range medicene bow peak area there was/ maybe still are awesome cabins that are off a dirt road in the woods. was very cheap but 45mins from Vedauwoo only 10 mins from snowy range which has routes. You all have to go and party at Centinial one night.

Hey Riley,
When you get your plans firmed up time frame wise, given that you want to climb in Boulder, we should plan to do a mellow Flatiron route. I'll have to stay out of Eldo prior to to the Boogaloo; gotta save what little reserves I posess for a couple Vedauwoo blow outs.

There are even some pretty good sport routes, even sorta steep, though maybe just "vert" by Southeast standards. I think the call it the cove? Plus some others scattered here and there.

Oh, and if you are there on a Tuesday, all you can eat tacos at this Mexican place in Laramie, it is right off of 70 in a hotel. Cheap to, like $4.00 or something.

So after awhile of driving around I think we have a good place for a base camp. This spot is far enough from the main area so it’s doubtful we will disturb any others. The road access should not be a problem if you have a low clearance car and is fairly easy to find even if you’re new to the Voo.

Reynolds Hill is a quick hike from here or you can drive to the central area and belay from your car. There’s also a nice little cliff within spitting distance of camp for all types of fondling.
I plan to bring a couple extra ropes for the inebriated speed climbing contests in the evenings.

The best approach is upon exiting I-80 you will come to a stop sign.
Zero out your odometer then turn onto Vedauwoo Rd.
Between 4.0 & 4.1 miles you will see forest road sign 700 N.

Turn left (NW) onto 700 N and you will see the rock in the distance.
There are two roads that branch off from 700 N so if you want a little more privacy from the horde you can follow these to many open flat spots to pitch your tent.

There's a good sized firepit by the rock in the lower center of the pic.

What say you boogalooers?

Yes it's a cool spot but still not far enough away from the RV crowd that a determined fella couldn't get one back there. A truck with a fifth wheel trailer was close by so anything can happen.

Originally I was looking off 707 which is a little more isolated but due to the offroad conditions as well as the complications of describing directions with no road markings, I believe this is the better space,

Who might be the first one of us out there that week to claim the spot???

I'll be psyched whatever piece of turf is chosen for base camp. Two suggestions: If a spot is way nice but has road clearance issues, shuttling works well--and places difficult to describe can be co-ordinated into google earth for maps and such. I bet TKingsbury would be all over that, his work has proven to me repeatedly that 3-d aerial photo beta maps are the new standard in the modern techno-world.

My only experience with the big V came in '76 in Eldo when we met another crew of stoners fresh from Laramie and spouting off about how, 'dude, the lines are classic'. The whole time he was talking I couldn't take my eyes off his brand new Levi's which had all these odd, perfectly rectangular tears all over them. Once he was done with his spiel I asked him, "did that happen in Veedawoo?". Once he responded in the affirmative the big V was off my list for good given I'm a complete lightweight when it comes to rock with an oppressively agro presentation.

Maybe someone can post a summary of what is going on when and with whom. Plus, information on camping and logistics (so people know what they need to bring) would be useful. Todd, back in the old days, just before BITD™, I ran into the Todd & Paul show on some foray or other in Vedauwoo, or maybe at Ames. In any case back then (maybe now still) there was a block missing on the front of the monument, providing an entrance into the interior. I only crawled in a few body lengths, to check it out, but those guys claimed that there was a tunnel all the around the base, maybe two by two feet, and that to make the hands and knees full tour was cool, but with a head lamp or flashlight was cheating.
Never did it myslef, maybe a boogaloo party game?

August 3-5 and 17-19, 2007.

OK, one day away from launching on the roadtrip to the Vedauwoo Boogaloo, Round 1.

Stich and Goatboy have done a grand job at keeping this gathering going, and the innovative response to a scheduling glitch has bifurcated the event into two weekends in August.

I'll be there, along with other Left-coasters... to play on the wide cracks and pay homage to their diffculty with sacraficial DNA offerings (only bringing 10 rolls of tape for 7 days of climbing!)...
...if you're going to be there this weekend I look foward to seeing you! I have no idea how this is all going to end up, but the goal is to get together and climb in a legendary place.

If I can keep from doing any yardwork this week, or typing on this nasty keyboard, or doing anything else other than catnappin', I may just have enough strength saved up to be able to climb both Saturday AND Sunday of this coming weekend Boogaloo, or part of the Sunday anyhow.

And yes, beer is good for that nasty abrasion and so much more eekonkee!

"I have here in my hand, the ale which cures what ails' yee, the universal balm it is, tonic of the ages, why even those with one leg in the grave and the other knee stuck in the dankest, darkest of OW's have been known, owing to just three beers, quaffed promptly in steadfast resolve and steadiness, to come back to the campfire of life refreshed, renewed, and fully repented..."

If anyone is planning to fly into Cheyenne and would like a ride up to Vedauwoo instead of renting a car, please email me. Likewise if anyone is interested in doing an early morning aerial tour/photo shoot of the Front Range (Boulder-north, including the Diamond) in a Cessna 172, please email me and we can discuss logistics. I'll take up to two observers who are willing to split the cost of a rental airplane for approximately two hours of flight time.... expect to pay about $100 each for your flight. I hope you all get your arses handed to you! Veedawou is a special place and deserves better! I'm glad I won't be there to witness the unharnessed egos and mindless banter! Posers! Perhaps I was a little harsh, here, may I suggest a few warm-up climbs for the aspiring OW'er:

1. Horn's Mother
2. MaxiLash
3. Big Pink

If you find those too easy, I hear there's fun one called "Squat". Bon apetit!

Lemme see if I can help eeyonkee,
Here's what I "know", in the biblical sense, meaning, you know:

Friday 13th 1st pitch
Boardwalk
4th July
Max Factor
Cool Hand Luke
Hung Like a Horse
Flying Buttress
Curry’s Diagonal

Notice hardly more than a body length of wide on any of that.
But I paid my dues in the Valley on OW, honest.
Also, this all was done before I got, well...really stocked up on excuses.

Besides Horns Mama,
Here's my list of to do's,
And no, Spectreman ain't on it, mostly fluff and wish list stuff here:

Great list, Eeyokee, (Tar's list (how did I forget flying buttress came up as I was hunt and pecking (just the ones he "know's" would make a five star climbing trip) all worthy, I've led them all.

Right Torpedo Tube
-I though it was the hardest thing I'd ever done when I led an early ascent in ~82, perfect for your big fists; Scarpelli free soloed it once in a Luebben-related rage.

Left Torpedo Tube
-Killer, (one of the John Garson mission climbs, also see B-g crack) I've done it many times,I think I have a date to go up it with, d'antonio, come along, let's have a party!

Horn's Mother - a true off fists classic, not to be missed, I don't expect to ever solo it again

October Light-pure blue coller armbaring and chicken winging; forever. I did the second ascent, I think, not sure if I can go that far without puking, these days.

Suggestions, You've probably done bunches of these, but:

The climb & Punishment, Penis Dimesnion, Hung like a horse alcove; if you haven't been there, you won't believe how cool it is!™

Mainstreet, 10a ow
nearby Bell crack (10/11) and Boardwalk (11), all must do's, if you haven't. Around the corner from Horn's.

Fourth of July is in that same area and is the full Vedauwoo experience; ow to flaring fingers .12a (tee hee!) One of the best pitches anywhere (think Tales, Enduro, Nine lives, etc) ask Tar for (onsight, tapeles, stetson) Beta.

'Some guy's' solo is good for a warm up, big pink will give you a workout. I hear worm drive is good.

Friday the thirteenth, ignore the alleged belay below the first roof!

Easy stuff;
Ed's crack, 5.7, is my favorite climb of all time.
Fall Wall for sandbag slabbin'
Fear & Loathing " " plus OW
Sattefield
H & H Grunt
Piton Perch (semi optimal summit)
Cat's Cradle " ")
Thomas McGary

CupCake crack, of course (points lost for roping up)

seen here, somewhat enhanced

There are stacks more, but that should be a start.

Drive to CA to drive to WY or just to climb here? If you drive to CA, I'll definately go climb w/ you!

Edit...to be clear about the carpool thing...it's that I need to be back on Saturday night (early Sun. a.m.). I don't want to drive all that way by myself for something that won't really be going on while I can be there.

Folks will have polished off 3 marathons by the time they get to me. In the early evening, they look pretty good, but as the night wears on the carnage builds. It's the long dark night of the sole in there.

So would I rather be grovelling up some crystal-studded flare?
Actually, yes, but one gets into these situations through previous commitments like marriage. Whattya gonna do.

Hey Rhodo,

Speaking of OB folks, Billy Roos spent a lot of time up in the Leadville area leading trips. One year as a side gig he had me up on Hope Pass with him, taking pictures of all the Leadville 100 contestants. Everybody looks pretty shagged coming back up over the past after the turnaround point down below.

I don't see any runners dissing climbers...climbers are dirty and stink!

And runners are not usually anorexic - they just have a lot less body fat than a lot of climbers because, well, they RUN!

Finally have those hands nearly all healed up. Ready for the Boogaloo 2. It's my b-day tomorrow. All I ask for is that I send those big bad offwidths.

...and maybe some beer and cake
...actually, a new No 5 Camalot would be nice
...come to think of it, I don't hsve any Aliens...

We are at the Boogaloo. Stopped by at 2:30 and it was going to storm. We checked out some routes down by the Lichen Lung then headed out to the campsite- no one was there. We headed back to the Nautilus and took a nap in the car since it rained. We will head out to the Loo tomorrow. We have beer already. There were two tents at the campsite. All's well in Laramie. See you tomorrow at N side of the Valley Massif and near Lichen Lung later.
