Y Kant Tori Read...Woohoo!
When a lot of these bands were popular I was in elementary school to junior high. Back then I always thought the guys w/ all the long hair and such looked scarey and bad instead of...well, fussy and feminine.
My brother had a particular KISS poster that my mom made him put in his closet b/c I was too scared to go into his room. (I was probably 5 then).
Speaking of KISS, Gene Simmons had one my all time favorite lines. Oprah asked him how long his tongue was, and his reply was, "Long enough to make you my closest friend." He said this to OPRAH. On the 4p.m. OPRAH SHOW! And they aired it! She was totally at a loss for words after that comment. I love it when something pretty raunchy gets through the sensors when you don't really expect it.
Edit: Now that I look at the picture, KISS was a lot scarier than the other men in lycra and make up. I guess it's that they weren't going for the rouge and eyeliner thing.

All I've seen so far mentioned are mostly bands that served little purpose other than a stepping stone to what has become the "Real Metal" of today.
You want Metal, look no further. No fear here, just raw percerverance in the face of overwhelming odds of failure.

I could never really get into all that dungeons and dragons metal bullsh#t.
Always liked that technical/mathmatical metal but could never really get into bands like Meshuggah. They try way to hard to be random and in tern loose their musical aspect.
Splitter, that I The Breather video was pretty bad ass. I can recognize talent when I hear it. I'd love to see these guys live and see how good they really are.
Speaking of techie metal, anyone hear of Animals as Leaders? By far one of the most talented lineups out there. Their music takes a certain taste to really like but there is no denying, these guys know their instruments inside out. And having seen them live, I can tell you they sound just as good live as on their recordings.
No kidding, you have to see this sh#t to believe it.

salamanizer - (I The Breather) "i'd love to see these guys live to see who good they are." -- evidently there pretty good live. they did the Mayhem Festival 2012 tour with Slayer, Slipknot, Anthrax, Motorhead, etc. and played the mainstage with them. glad you like them.
here is another band i have been following since '05 that are pretty tight, & also good in live...

Those Animals as leaders guys sure know how to play! I like that kind of stuff on an instrumental level but its pretty hard for someone to sing over it & still sound smooth. Your comment about meshugga is spot on. A lot of techy metal is so detailed & the drum patterns are so complex it just sounds like every band member is playing a different song. My favorite kinds of metal are usually guitar driven, somewhat technical with lots of time changes, solos, melodies, & harmonies but I definitely have a soft spot for the good ole' vocally driven aggressive metal. Cases in point:
First time I saw hatebreed they opened for Slayer in a 1000 ppl bar & they pretty much stole the show, I couldn't believe their energy & full on rage. I thought at one point the place might get torn to the ground. Not the most talented musically but the raw emotion they deal with in their music & lyrics really resonated with me as "heavy" to say the least.
Edit- I still think they are talented musically but yeah compared to some mathemetal there's no comparison as players.

Speaking of Slayer, I use to particularly like some of there intro's, bitd (80's). I use to listen to them over & over. Of course, me being an X'tian metal head/headbanger, i new exactly where they where coming from, but didn't let that interfere with listening to there music. Music can have a certain intoxicating influence upon individuals. Guys like RJD use to talk about it and he was spot on.
Another "dark/black metal" band that definitely had that "spirit" about it from that time period was a group called "Deicide" (death to God) they didn't hide where they were coming from. Actually were banned from the top fanzine because they openly talked about their blood sacrifices (cats, etc) before concerts and how they would always have a High Priest praying over their concerts while they were going on. One of my favorite Christian Metal groups of the late 80's 'Believer', got signed to the same label 'Metal Blade" (or maybe it was Roadrunner Records, i'll have to check) and toured with them and got to know them well. They were definitely down with Satan. I recall talking to one of there ardent fans that I new from college, this one young guy who was getting his MS engineering at San Jose State when I was going there. He went to one of their concerts, and when he told me about it, all he could talk about was "There was definitely something in the air, something very different that i couldn't quite put my finger on...!" I new exactly what IT was!
Didn't mean to get sketchy on ya, start ya trippin' or whatever, just discussing! And I figured that you were all big enough boys to handle what i had to say. Besides the listening to the chords/riffs, etc., I always pay close attention to the lyrics, what they are talking about. Pretty obvious why they have a certain segment who were/are very ardent and loyal fan's.
Here is one of my personal favorites from, bitd, very cool intro...

Don't be such a puss Weez, he pushed an out of control fan off the stage at a venue that severely lacked security. Of course it's unfortunate he bumped his head and died, but if he wasn't acting like an as#@&%e this accident would have never happened. Some people deserve a boot, and if you just so happen to get injured or die because of your own dumbass actions, well, that's on you. Life isn't as precious as some people try and make it out to be.
People die, it's as natural as rain on a goddamn Sunday morning.
